Servant Jazz Quarters

In spite of its name, Servant Jazz Quarters isn't a dedicated jazz venue; before it was fully licensed, it was possible to hear sax players warming up in the Vortex Jazz Club upstairs. SJQ likes innovative musicians, however, and has featured people as diverse as Hot Chip, Anna Meredith, Eddie Prévost, Laura Mvula, Steve Beresford and Seb Rochford -- not all at the same time, unfortunately. The bar serves cocktails (the Tarte Tatin, involving calvados, caramel liqueur and green apple, sounds teeth-hurtingly delicious) and draught Budvar and Samuel Adams, with a wide range of bottled beers and spirits. SJQ is located a couple of minutes' walk from Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland Overgournd stations, and is served by the 30, 38, 56, 67, 76, 149, 236, 242, 277, N38 and N76 bus routes.

What's On @ Servant Jazz Quarters

Adrian Crowley

Adrian Crowley

3 Dec 2025 - 3 Dec 2025

One stormy night in Ireland, Adrian Crowley's brother brought home a wounded crow. After taking care of it for a time, the crow flew away on its own, leaving an impression behind: Crowley wrote a story, which would later become the aptly titled Crow Song on this, his brand new record & ninth studio album The Watchful Eye of the Stars. He sings, And I was joyous for you, but shattered none-the-less. Suffused with a hazy and surreal quality, Crowley describes Watchful Eye's poignant narratives as those which insisted themselves upon him. After the fact, it seemed these songs came to him more or less fully formed. It's a beautiful and mysterious thing, he says. Perhaps it is a tendency to hold onto memories (It's taken me so long to write to you / Well I just couldnt find a pen, he laments in Bread and Wine), that allows him to unleash them lyrically in completion. For Crowley, the creative process is an organic event rather than a practice he feels compelled to regulate or control. He approaches lyrics much like he does short story writing. The songs straddle the conscious and subconscious world and some are even psychedelic in my mind, but to me they are all at once true stories and born of another place, he shares. In making the album, Crowley moved between studio and at home recording, while John Parish (Aldous Harding, PJ Harvey) produced. The pair worked from tracks made initially by Crowley on a charity shop ¾ size nylon string guitar or Mellotron: In this way, John wanted to keep some of the magic of that first take, says Crowley. Contradictions and complexities are left intact, initial recordings were limited to one or two takes, and the songs feel more like a dream recounted upon waking.

Daniel Vildósola & John Waugh - Live at SJQ
Daniel Vildosola and John Waugh may come from opposite sides of the Atlanticone from the sun-scorched deserts of Arizona, the other from the rolling hills of Northumberland, UKbut together, their music finds an effortless middle ground. Drawing from their vastly different environments, theyve created a sound that feels natural, fusing Americana and jazz with a sense of place and history thats both personal and expansive. Vildosolas Americana roots are steeped in the rugged landscape of Tucson, while Waughs jazz upbringing in Newcastle is influenced by the citys industrial heritage. Both places share a spirit of resilience, shaped by their unique histories. This common ground adds a textured backdrop to their collaboration, blending the wide-open spaces of the American West with the sophistication of jazz. Individually, theyve cut their teeth on the world stage in pop musicVildosola, a long- standing member of HÆLOS, producing various artists, and more recently, touring extensively with CMAT. While Waugh has spent over a decade playing with the chart- topping powerhouse, The 1975. Despite their success in the pop world, they now find themselves retreating to intimate venues, where they can explore a more organic, jazz- infused sound, drawing from the folk traditions and stories of their respective homes. Together, they create a unique blend of Americana Jazz, where the rich storytelling of roots music meets the improvisational freedom of jazz. Its a collaboration that feels both familiar and fresh, connecting two distant landscapes into a cohesive, compelling musical journey.
