Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

An oak-and-thatch replica of the Globe Theatre – the Elizabethan playhouse for which William Shakespeare wrote the majority of his plays – modern Shakespeare's Globe is an acclaimed theatre that was founded by Sam Wanamaker, located only 230 meters from the site of the original. Shakespeare's Globe stages productions by the Bard and his contemporaries. The main round auditorium space can seat 850 people on benches, with an additional 700 standing positions – called 'Groundlings' – by the stage. Next door to the main theatre is the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre modelled after Jacobean era theatres, which stage productions in the winter months when the Globe cannot be used.

Troilus and Cressida - Globe

Troilus and Cressida - Globe

26 Sept 2025 - 26 Oct 2025

Two opposing worlds clash in the Globe Theatre this summer, in Shakespeare’s rarely performed, genre-defying satire Troilus and Cressida. The legends of Greece and Troy are gripped by an epic war, fighting for honour and bravery. As a thrilling, action-packed battle rages around them, Trojan prince Troilus falls deeply in love with Cressida, and they swear their eternal love… But wait! That’s NOT the play we’re about to see. Fast forward eight years, and everything has ground to a halt in a seemingly pointless, exhausting conflict with no resolution in sight. The manufactured glamour of war is losing its sheen in Troy, and the Greek camp is an apocalyptic wasteland. What happens when the heroes we worship, and the stories that drive us, can no longer live up to their mythic narratives? In his Globe debut, director Owen Horsley (Twelfth Night, Regent’s Park Open Air) explores the cult of celebrity and the egos that propel wars forward in Shakespeare’s cynical, satirical study of appearance versus reality. ‘Like, or find fault; do as your pleasures are’ – Prologue ASSISTED PERFORMANCES: Captioned, 12 October, 1:00pm; 16 October, 7:30pm BSL Signed, 15 October, 7:30pm; 19 October, 1:00pm Audio Described, 17 October, 2:00pm Relaxed, 19 October, 6:30pm; 22 October, 2:00pm

Enter shipwrecked, grief-stricken Viola. But love can be as changeable as the weather… Robin Belfield (Princess Essex, 2024) returns to unleash Shakespeare’s topsy-turvy tale of the power of love and freedom of expression into the Globe. ‘Why this is very midsummer madness’ – Act III, scene 4 ASSISTED PERFORMANCES: Captioned, 3 September, 7:30pm; 16 October, 2:00pm Relaxed, 7 September, 1:00pm; 14 October, 2:00pm BSL Signed, 18 September, 2:00pm; 11 October, 2:00pm Audio Described, 19 September, 2:00pm; 4 October, 2:00pm
