Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

5 Jul 2025 - 4 Oct 2025

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair. This is the true story of ‘Fair Cop’ Alfie’s big plan to transition from the BBC radio waves to TV star. Could it be done? Or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

Written, Produced and Directed by James Hyland Performed by Ashton Spear and James Hyland Music by Chris Warner In 1941, Rudolf Hss, Commandant of the Nazi concentration camp known as Auschwitz, assembled his SS personnel in a secret meeting with the express purpose of introducing a new method for exterminating Europe's Jews: Zyklon B, a deadly poison gas. Every soldier in attendance was sworn to secrecy, and no one questioned its usage. No one except a lone Jewish prisoner, forced to participate and humiliated throughout; the very prisoner upon which this "lesson" would be demonstrated. Based upon real events, 'A Lesson from Auschwitz' explores how and why the Nazis did what they did, shedding light on the mentality of the perpetrators and the disturbing reality of life in a death camp. Officially commended by The Foundation of Memory Sites Near Auschwitz-Birkenau "as as piece of theatre it excels in practically every single way... an exceptional piece of work and a vital reminder that something like this can never be allowed to happen again." Rating: ~Sophie Adnitt, BritishTheatre.com "MAGNIFICENT... a powerfully realised drama that finds new angles on these events where so many have trod before... the most powerful refutation there could be of Holocaust denial... a majestic statement of the power of theatre" Rating: ~Tim Hochstrasser, Plays To See

Skipton Camerata: As Night Turns to Day
Haydn Symphony no 6 La Matin Dvok Nocturne Webern Five Movements for String Orchestra Mozart Symphony 36 'Linz' From the very first bars of La Matin , Haydn paints a vivid musical sunrise, lifting us from the quiet stillness of night into the brilliance of a new day in just six bars. This sense of transformation and contrast is the heartbeat of the entire program. Composed in 1761, Haydns symphony straddles two worlds: the ornate elegance of the Baroque and the clarity of the emerging Classical style. Its a portrait of a composer on the edge of a new era, bold, visionary, and endlessly inventive. If Haydn stirs us awake, Dvok gently leads us into a dreamlike calm with his Nocturne , a piece of tender, floating beauty that feels almost suspended in time. From there, the theme of contrast evolves into a play on perception, with two very different glimpses of Vienna. First, we enter the edgy, modern world of Webern and his Five Movements for String Orchestra, short, intense bursts of sound that capture a city buzzing with uncertainty and avant-garde energy. And finally, we return to Viennas classical heart with a late Mozart masterpiece, his radiant Linz Symphony. Written in just a few days, it closes the concert with confidence, brilliance, and a joyful spirit that still dazzles centuries later.

Josienne Clarke & The Deluded Far From Nowhere
Theres an irony that cuts to the bone on Far From Nowhere, the new album from the critically acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist Josienne Clarke. Long admired for her crystalline voice and unflinching lyrical gaze, Clarke has always had an ability to evoke a communal melancholy. But with this LP, recorded at a remote Scottish cabin, shes achieved the feat of stripping away the barriers between artist and listener. What emerges is a record of remarkable intimacy and integrity as Clarke embraces stillness and vulnerability. She sought total isolation but ended up creating something even more profoundly connective. Clarke has always been unafraid to ask questions with no clear answers, and here she gives herself no hiding place. In that sense, this is her most complete artistic statement yet as she spins rawness into elegance. While she admits it may not join the pantheon of classic isolation records Im not in control of the historic time and wider context in which Im creating and its not for me to be diverted by whether my output has any place in popularity, she says it still sits firmly in the lineage of Bruce Springsteens Nebraska, Bon Ivers For Emma, Forever Ago, and the lo-fi solo work of Adrianne Lenker.
Smoove & Turrell [The Singles Tour]

Smoove & Turrell [The Singles Tour]

28 Nov 2025 - 28 Nov 2025

The story ofSmoove & Turrellbegan in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul. Smoove had met keyboardist Mike Porter through the local music scene in Newcastle and recruited him for his Smoove Live project for the label Acid Jazz. Around Mikes house one day they overheard a neighbour singing sublime melodies in his garage with friends which turned out to be none other than a young John Turrell practicing in a band called The Stevies. After a couple of further sessions scouting him they finally knocked on the door and had a chat and hit it off straight away. Their first track was the now classic I Cant Give You Uprecorded at Mike Porters house as his Hammond Organ was immovably wedged in his utility room. It was in fellow soul head Craig Charlesthat they found their first radio champion as he supported them heavily on The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Showwhich was a kick-starter for their assault on national radio eventually landingRadio 2 record of the week. The band's 6th studio albumStratos Bleuscored their first official UK charts Number 1 (Dance Album Chart) as well as making a healthy dent in the Overall album Top 40. Alongside this they were given an Album of the Day accolade at BBC 6 music, cementing the fact that 6 albums in, their brand of gritty realism doused in dancefloor euphoria is more relevant than ever. A delayed but relentless tour schedule for Stratos Bleu meant that it wasnt until the middle of 2022 that they could get back to writing, delivering their 7th albumRed Ellen (named after a female labour politician who was instrumental in shaping post war attitudes to social justice) which was released in October 2023. Less electronic an odyssey than Stratos Bleu, but still firmly centred on the dancefloor and with an overwhelmingly optimistic message of love and compassion, Red Ellen is tempered as always with the reality of working class life in the North East of England.

Skipton Pride 2025 - Maddie Morris

2 Aug 2025 - 2 Aug 2025

With support, TBC Leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters - Jim Moray BBC Young Folk Award winnerMaddie Morrisis an artist who strives to make a difference in the world. Bold, insightful and refreshingly unique, they take traditional song in new directions to shine a light on contemporary issues, offering new perspectives about the world we live in today. Folk songs have always told stories, but how Maddie makes their mark is by turning this storytelling into action. Described by Jim Moray as leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters, Maddie uses their work to highlight inequality, challenge viewpoints and provide an inclusive space for shared experiences. Maddie was recently commissioned by Unlimited to explore LGBTQIA+ experiences of disability through traditional music, and has also been proud to collaborate with organisations such as Queer Folk, The Bit Collective and Trans Pride Brighton. Whether theyre a turning centuries-old ballad on its head or writing something completely new, Maddie places their focus on drawing out true meaning rather than being true to tradition. Maddie released their first studio EP Upstream in 2022 to huge critical acclaim. Two years on, theyre following this up with their debut studio album, Skin (released February 2024). Skin is a beautifully crafted collection of songs which amplifies the stories of those often marginalised by society. Passionately political, yet gently understated, this is music that deftly treads the path between art and activism. https://www.maddiemorrismusic.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/MaddieMorrisMusic/ https://www.instagram.com/maddiemorrismusic https://twitter.com/ queerfeminist https://www.youtube.com/@maddiemorris2085 https://www.tiktok.com/@maddiemorrismusic https://spoti.fi/47uWqEN

We will look at how these messages were interpreted and perceived by local communities during wartime, focusing particularly on the Holgate family of Earby. Jah Wobble

Jah Wobble

2 Oct 2025 - 12 Nov 2025

Over the past three decades or so, Jah Wobble has ploughed his own furrow as a prolific solo artist, as well as becoming a well-respected session musician, with genuine passion for Eastern and Global music. He has worked with a diverse range of musicians, including Baaba Maal, Bjork, Primal Scream, Brian Eno, Sinead O'Connor, Julianne Regan, Delores O'Riordan, Holgat Czukay, The Edge and Chaka Demus & Pliers. The man born John Wardle began his musical journey when he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious at Kingsway College, London in 1973. It was Vicious who not only nicknamed John 'Jah Wobble' after a drunken binge but also loaned him his first bass guitar. Lydon asked JW to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) in spring 1978. Wardle's distinctive 'low end' bass became the backbone of PiL's pioneering sound. After its follow-up, the exploratory yet sinister soundscapes of Metal Box, Wardle became disillusioned by politics within the band and their reluctance to play live. He eventually split from PiL in mid-1980 and embarked on a prolific solo career. Wobble is joined on stage by drummer Marc Layton-Bennett and Martin Chung.

Sarah McQuaid

Sarah McQuaid

15 Sept 2025 - 30 Apr 2026

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post. With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally. Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

Teacher CPD: Rocks and Fossils of Craven

24 Sept 2025 - 24 Sept 2025

At the Craven Museum, we offer bookable CPD sessions for primary school teachers. These are designed to consolidate and build subject knowledge (both general and local); to gain new ideas for engaging pupils; and we will explore the Craven Museum Collection to see how pupils can benefit from object-based learning. Our next CPD session will cover Rocks and Fossils (Key Stage Two Science Curriculum). We'll explore and identify the key rock types, the rock cycle, and use specific examples from the geology of the Craven area. Well also show you how to identify local fossils, to interpret them and how they were preserved. There'll be plenty of hands-on experience and a chance to quiz a geologist.
