A big welcome to this months superstar guest, the amazing Nicola Farnon, wonderful vocalist and double bassist. Nicola Farnon, widely recognized as one of the UK's classiest jazz and swing singers and double bassists, has a remarkable musical pedigree, with professional classical musician parents and the late Robert Farnon as her great uncle. Raised on cello and piano, she began singing and playing double bass in her twenties, leading to a 30-year jazz career. A regular at top venues and festivals with her trio or quartet, including Glastonbury, Nicola has toured Ukraine, completed four Rural Tours, and frequently appeared on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Requests and Jazz Line Up. She has performed and recorded with jazz luminaries including Dave Newton, Digby Fairweather, Jim Mullen, Steve Brown, Bruce Adams and Alan Barnes, and has appeared alongside class jazz acts as diverse as Eliane Elias, Courtney Pine, Georgie Fame, Tony Kofi, the Michael Garrick Jazz Britannia Orchestra, Sir John Dankworth, Dame Cleo Laine, Humphrey Lyttleton and Acker Bilk. On stage, Nicola captivates audiences with her passionate, swinging style, outstanding personality, and charismatic presence. Nicola will be taking us on a journey to explore a mix of jazz classics, standards and original compositions, with the inspirational fusion of vocals and deeply crafted musicianship on the double bass. One of those rare artists, like Esperanza Spalding, who create beautiful harmonic figures on the double bass, while singing joyfully along with their own accompaniment, we are very excited to welcome Nicola to Smokey Joes. Nicola joins with the Smokey Joes awesome jazz house team, with the barefoot energy, flying socks and passion of Alex Steele on piano, and the mighty groove merchant, Mike Cypher on drums, always ready to turn those unexpected beats into unrivalled rhythmical joy! Greg Abate Quartet at Smokey Joe's Cheltenham
This is definitely part of the Smokey Joes Jazz Legends Series, because weve delighted to welcome back legendary US saxophonist, Greg Abate, as part of his UK tour. Greg is based in the USA, a musician of brilliant international standing, and without a doubt, amongst the finest jazz players of his generation. After studying at Berklee in the mid 70's, Greg joined the Ray Charles band, and later the renowned Artie Shaw Orchestra. Since then, Greg has had an outstanding career as a band leader in his own right. His recent albums include a beautiful album with the late great Phil Woods, and his most recent album with the incredible pianist, Kenny Baron. As well as his touring work, Greg is also a composer, arranger, a Grammy-nominated recording artist and educator of considerable note, serving as an adjunct Professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College. His fluent and muscular playing is best described as post hard bop, encompassing a classic approach to the material in the style of Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley and Phil Woods. "Abate is not content to rely on stock bebop riffs ... his work has a feeling of constant invention and creativity. Chicago Tribune "A unique voice" Metro, San Jose "One of the most exciting players around today" The Jazz Messenger Greg Abate is one of the most appealing saxophonists on the scene today ... the result is that he plays music with sweetness and daring. New Jazz Recordings Joining Greg tonight, we have the awesome house band, with the barefoot energy, flying socks and passion of Alex Steele on piano; the insuperable groove merchant, Mike Cypher on drums; and the beautifully melodic, lyrical, eloquent and effervescent, Moyk Green on double bass.
