@sohoplace opened in 2022 as the first new theatre in the West End in 50 years. It was mandated by Westminster Council when Crossrail was approved, as a replacement for the Astoria Theatre which was demolished as part of the development. The architects were Alford Hall Monaghan Morris. It is run by Nimax Theatres who were involved since the inception of the plan in 2010. The theatre has an auditorium with 602 seats set in the round. Its nearest underground station is Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross is a 15 minute walk. There is a bar and restaurant on the ground floor built with labradorite granite.

As drought closes in on his family’s farmand the village he loves, everyone prays for a miracle. All William has tohand are some library books and scraps of old machinery. The rest mustcome from within. Will he defy expectations? Will the wind turn the sailsof his invention, produce the gift of power, and give hope for tomorrow? An exploration of life, loss and a single question: Where does true inspiration come from? Composer Philip Glass and performer-director Phelim McDermott (Improbable) have worked together on acclaimed opera productions in London, New York and beyond, and Tao of Glass is their most personal collaboration yet. Inspired by a dream, this worldpremiere marries ten meditations on life, death and Taoist wisdom with ten brand new pieces of music from Glass, presented by McDermott with an ensemble of musicians and puppeteers. Part-concert, part- performance, Tao of Glass is a storytelling tapestry, soundtracked by Glass’s mesmerising music and shot through with Improbable’s trademark theatricality.
