Southbank Centre

Arguably the leading arts venue in the UK, the Southbank Centre, comprising five main venues -- Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, the Hayward Gallery and the Saison Poetry Library -- occupies a 21-acre site on the banks of the Thames. Originally created in 1951 for the Festival of Britain, over the decades the institution has flourished to become a thriving festival site, hosting music, dance, art, spoken word and performance events. The venue not only supports four resident orchestras, 14 artists in residence and over 100 more artistic organisations, it also manages the Art Council Collection and curates the Hayward Touring Exhibition which visits venues across the country.

Be in the room for a landmark live tribute bringing the songs and music from the legendary director’s films to the stage. The visionary film-maker David Lynch is renowned not only for his surreal, bold and experimental films, but also for his musical mind, which contributed to the mystifying and disturbing beauty of their soundtracks. Conceived by composer and musical director David Coulter, this concert tribute features a journey through the music from many of Lynch’s films and television shows, including Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, reimagined by David Coulter and his band of musicians and guest singers, including Sophia Brous, Anna Calvi, Kirin J. Callinan, Mick Harvey and Conor O’Brien (Villagers). Coulter also worked on Double Fantasy Live for Yoko Ono’s Meltdown in 2013, which took place in the Royal Festival Hall here at the Southbank Centre. Band on the Wall presents Tanita Tikaram
Rising to fame at just 18, Tikaram became known for her remarkable voice and for challenging the music stereotypes of the late 1980s and early 90s. Her debut album ‘Ancient Heart’ sold over 4 million copies, earning her a global following that remains loyal today. Across nine studio albums, Tikaram’s music and collaborations have reflected her deep engagement with themes of humanity and politics. This special Manchester concert will see Tikaram reimagine her extensive back catalogue and debut new material, offering audiences a deeper insight into her artistry. She will perform with a specially assembled chamber band featuring musicians from diverse backgrounds, blending genres such as contemporary classical, folk, indie, pop, and electronic music. From her iconic hit “Twist In My Sobriety” to newer works like “Glass Love Train,” Tikaram’s performance promises to highlight the personal and political lyricism that defines her as, in the words of Pete Paphides, “a national treasure in waiting”.

A 100 Year Revolution: The Harlem Renaissance
Trace the century-long cultural impact of the Harlem Renaissance across the Black diaspora in a panel discussion made up of writers, musicians and historians. Acclaimed jazz talent development organisation Tomorrow’s Warriors hosts a panel including Bonnie Greer, Margaret Busby, Soweto Kinch and Kevin Le Gendre to discuss the origins of the Harlem Renaissance, exploring how the Black creative revolution in 1920s New York transformed the world, both then and now. The Harlem Renaissance saw an explosion of literature, music, visual art, and intellectual thought that defined a new African American identity. Black artists, writers and musicians were taking control of their own narrative and through a movement that would grow to encompass and celebrate commonality of the cultural heritage of the African diaspora. The panel examines how Harlem’s cultural explosion influenced Black British identity, the impact of transatlantic artistic exchanges and the role of the creative arts in cultural solidarity. This event is part of Tomorrow’s Warriors Presents Harlem Renaissance: A 100 Year Revolution. The ticket price includes a £2 venue restoration levy. Presented by Southbank Centre. Adekunle Gold is a Nigerian born and bred singer-songwriter based between Lagos, Nigeria, and the US. He gained recognition from his very first release, "Sade" a love song which sampled instrumentals from One Direction's "Story of My Life" which led to him signing a recording contract just two weeks after its release. Since then, Adekunle has released 4 albums: Gold (debuting at #7 on the Billboard World Albums Chart), About 30 (shortlisted for the GRAMMY Best World Album), Afro Pop Vol 1 - which has amassed a staggering 680 million plus streams and spawned the global hit records "Okay" and "Something Different" - and Catch Me If You Can. Released earlier this year, Adekunle Gold's fourth studio album Catch Me If You Can, has garnered almost 300 million streams and features collaborations with an array of top-tier talent including Ty Dolla $ign, Stefflon Don, Fatoumata Diawara and Fousheé and the hit singles "It Is What It Is," "Sinner" ft Lucky Daye, "High" ft Davido and "Mercy." Mulatu Astatke is one of Ethiopia’s most celebrated musicians and arrangers, best known for changing the face of Ethiopian music during the “Swinging Addis” era of the late ‘60s and 1970s. He is the father of the music he has named “Ethio Jazz”. At 81, the Ethiopian composer and multi-instrumentalist is considered the father of "Ethio-jazz," a movement born in the late 1960s that fused jazz, Latin music, and traditional Ethiopian music. After the "golden age of the 1970s" in Ethiopia, his music regained popularity in 1998 thanks to the Ethiopiques record series, before being further popularized by Jim Jarmusch's 2005 film Broken Flowers. Since then, he has toured worldwide and collaborated with numerous artists from all walks of life, bringing his hypnotic and haunting music, both modern and traditional, to a wider audience. For 2025, the Father of Ethio Jazz will bring he farewell shows to London and annnounces a new studio album, Mulatu Plays Mulatu, for Strut. His first major studio album in over 10 years, Mulatu Plays Mulatu features his full big band performing alongside Ethiopian cultural musicians and stands as a fitting climax to an incredible career. “Throughout my life, I wanted to bring Ethio jazz to all corners of the world for people to enjoy and I feel that I have succeeded in that,” says Mulatu. Michelle Escoffery presents the return of Kindred Spirit, a night of eclectic soul, R&B, jazz and spoken word from up-and-coming and established musicians. The live music night, founded by Ivor Novello and Brit Award-winning songwriter Michelle Escoffery, was a premier monthly live event in London, becoming development ground to many of the UK’s finest artists, including Corinne Bailey-Rae, Slam Champion poet and author Kat Francois and Mercury Prize-nominee TY. Artists featuring in this edition include Nii Ayikwei Parkes, Bembe Segue, Tahn Solo and Ashainë White. Nii Ayikwei Parkes is a multi-genre author, working across poetry, radio, fiction and children’s writing. Winner of multiple international awards, he is the author of several books. Singer, composer and producer Bembe Segue, who fuses Brazilian and Afro-Cuban beats with hip-hop and broken beat. Tahn Solo’s artistic background is in musical theatre, but as a neo-soul artist, his sounds are soft and soothing, and provide a fresh and alternative take on the genre. London-based singer-songwriter Ashainë White strives to be ‘alternative’ in the purest sense of the word, with her ‘grunge-soul’ sound earning her an Ivor Novello Rising Star nomination. Leading as music director is London-based composer, producer and bassist Rudi Creswick. Known for his skills on bass with UK soul and jazz acts like Tom Misch, Loyle Carner and Alfa Mist. Jumaane Smith has performed on five Grammy Award-winning records (selling more than 60 million copies), two Emmy Award-nominated TV performances, in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, at the Grammy Awards with Stevie Wonder, and more. Each year, artists from Serious’ Take Five programme - supporting the UK’s most exciting jazz and improvising artists - are showcased with a performance at the EFG London Jazz Festival. Marysia Osu is a Polish-born, London-based harpist, producer and composer who blends classical, ambient, and electronic music. Her debut album, harp, beats & dreams, explores themes of philosophy, dreams, and the interplay between the conscious and unconscious mind. Fully self-produced and home-made, it documents her evolution as a solo composer and producer. Ghana-born, Manchester-raised Rory A. Green crafts a mesmerising sonic tapestry that bridges jazz sophistication with folk intimacy. Drawing from his dual English and West African heritage, Green’s guitar work transcends cultural boundaries with remarkable fluidity, earning recognition for his distinctive conversational style. For two decades, Take Five has been a vital launchpad for mid-career musicians, offering an artistic residency, industry upskilling, mentorship and a wider network of musicians and industry professionals alike. The flagship talent development programme platforms the saxophonist and the percussionist, two of the UK’s most exciting artists and composers. Heralded by BBC Music Magazine as ‘a distinctive new voice in a crowded scene’, Scottish saxophonist and composer Matt Carmichael continues to move from strength to strength and grow his reach globally with his powerfully emotive blend of jazz and folk music. His latest album, Dancing with Embers, is a collection of emotionally driven instrumental songs where melody takes centre stage. Gloria Yehilevsky is a London-based composer and improviser who integrates percussion performance with ongoing cognitive and contemplative research, resulting in a fluid cluster of activity. Her transdisciplinary practice extends from improvised vibraphone performance to collaborative projects that dissolve hierarchies and audience-artist divisions, shaping a dynamic, introspective and exploratory sound.
