Southwold Summer Theatre - GASLIGHT, by Patrick Hamilton
GASLIGHT, by Patrick Hamilton Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmunds Hall 13th to 16th August 2025 The original, classic Psychological Thriller, was written in 1938, but set in dark and dangerous, foggy London, before electric lighting. The title, and its derivative, gaslighting has of course become part of our modern lexicon. Hamilton's original play is indeed a dark tale of a marriage based on deceit and trickery, and features a husband trying to drive his already fragile wife insane. But, as we learn his hidden motive, an even more terrifying murder-mystery is revealed, with a final twist that shows Hamiltons mastery of the genre. A West-End hit, and still one of the longest-running Broadway plays. Running time approximately 2hrs with interval. Tickets 16 or 22 depending on location. Evenings Wednesday to Saturday 7:30pm and Matinees 4pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. (For further information, disabled access, or group bookings please call 01728 343344.) We look forward to welcoming you. Also at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall Monday 28th July to Saturday 9th August (not Sundays).
Southwold Summer Theatre - Things We Do For Love, by Alan Ayckbourn
Things We Do For Love, by Alan Ayckbourn Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmund Hall Wednesday 20th to Saturday 30th August 2025 (not Sunday, Monday or Tuesday) Comic, cruel, classic by Ayckbourn at his mid-period best, centring on the love triangle between two women and one man - although the unrequited, obsessive affection of the downstairs lodger possibly makes it a love square! In a play that includes passion, comedy, and some violence, Ayckbourn handles a potentially tragic theme in a black romantic comedy that will jar both your funny bone and your heart. This memorably bruising comedy is a Private Lives for the nineties." (The Guardian). With a unique, new set design personally approved by the author. Also at Aldeburgh Jubilee Hall Monday 11th to Saturday 16th August.
Southwold Summer Theatre - While The Sun Shines, by Terence Rattigan
While The Sun Shines by Terence Rattigan Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmunds Hall Wednesday 3rd to Saturday 6th September 2025 Our closing tribute to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. On his wedding-eve, young Earl Harpenden has put up a drunken American soldier he met the night before. When Harpendens fiance turns up, the lonely American flirts outrageously, thinking she is Harpendens ex, West-End doyen, Mabel Crum. This sparkling Romcom with the laughs of a perfect Farce shows both the authors dazzling stage-craft and his belief that, even in the darkest of times, there is still love, hope and laughter. A masterpiece outstanding in every way (The Times). Running time approximately 2hrs with interval. Tickets 16 or 22 depending on location. Evenings Wednesday to Saturday 7:30pm and Matinees 4pm on Thursdays and Saturdays. (For further information, disabled access, or group bookings please call 01728 343344.) The Tales Our Mother Told! By Pat Whymark
THE TALES OUR MOTHER TOLD! by Pat Whymark "What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive" At their mother's memorial service, estranged brothers Brian and Dennis Cox remember the tales she told them as children - and as adults. Some were fables of homespun wisdom, some were her own versions of the grimmest fairy tales. Did they help the brothers in their life path, or did they make the forest darker and the way less clear? Were her stories just for fun, or a kind of smokescreen, an enchanted mist that enticed them to strange parts, then left them without Google maps? Untangling the web of her imagination could either bring the brothers closer, or shatter their uneasy peace for ever. Common Ground are committed to keeping small-scale theatre alive and well in East Anglia, presenting shows that are, first and foremost, entertaining. Featuring live music, performed by our company of skilled actor-musicians, our productions are theatrically inventive, character-based and always emotionally engaging.
