Programme to include: Bridge Cello Sonata Saint-Sans The Swan Villa-Lobos O Canto do Cisne Negro Ireland Cello Sonata Cellist Chris Grist and pianist Daniel Grimwood present a richly expressive programme celebrating the lyrical beauty and dramatic power of the cello. Frank Bridges Cello Sonata opens the evening with music of great depth and introspection, its sweeping lines and shifting moods shaped by a composer writing in the shadow of the First World War. At the heart of the programme are two strikingly contrasted pieces centred around swans. Saint-Sans much-loved The Swan, from The Carnival of the Animals, offers a moment of poise and elegance, while Villa-Lobos O Canto do Cisne Negro (Song of the Black Swan) casts a darker, more mysterious spell, blending Romantic lyricism with the distinctive colours of Brazilian music. The programme concludes with John Irelands Cello Sonata, a powerful and rhapsodic work admired for its emotional breadth, intensity and passion. Together, these works create a compelling journey through light and shadow, revealing the cello at its most expressive and evocative.
Vivaldi's Four Seasons at Christmas - Weds , St George's Church, London
Programme to include: Handel Overture to Messiah Corelli Christmas Concerto Torelli Christmas Concerto Bach Violin Concerto in A minor Vivaldi The Four Seasons Tonights programme celebrates Christmas through the elegance and brilliance of the Baroque era, with a selection of beautifully crafted festive masterpieces. Opening the programme is the overture from Handels Messiah, whose opening section centres on the prophecy and birth of Christ, making it one of the defining sounds of the Christmas repertoire. Corellis Christmas Concerto, written for the night of Christmas, and Torellis Christmas Concerto both capture the spirit of Christmas night, with music that suggests the shepherds of the Nativity and the stillness of the scene. Completing the programme is Vivaldis Four Seasons, a dazzling set of concertos that remains one of the most famous and vivid works in all classical music. Each concerto paints a different season in sound, drawing on accompanying poems possibly written by Vivaldi himself to bring the natural world vividly to life. Across the four concertos, Vivaldi conjures birdsong and buzzing flies, harvest celebrations, barking dogs, summer storms and winter ice.

London Concertante Chamber Series - , St George's Church, Hanover Square
Experience an evening of intimate chamber music from three distinctive voices of the classical tradition, performed by the acclaimed London Concertante in a candlelit setting. At the heart of the programme is Franz Schuberts String Trio in B-flat, D. 471 a fragment that offers a glimpse into the composers early chamber style. Though unfinished, the work brims with Schuberts characteristic lyricism and charm, its single movement unfolding with elegance and youthful vitality. Alongside this, the richly coloured String Trio by Jean Cras brings a different sound world to the stage. Cras creates music that feels both expansive and intimate, blending expressive harmonies with subtle rhythmic vitality. Completing the programme is the Divertimento Trio by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a masterclass in clarity, balance and wit. Effortlessly elegant, the work captures Mozarts gift for melodic invention and conversational interplay between instruments, offering moments of both playful brilliance and refined beauty. Whether youre already in the know or completely new to classical music, this is a programme to be enjoyed by all.
