St John's Episcopal Church

St John's is a beautiful historic building comprising a main church, church hall and public meeting room. All are available to hire for public or private events -- we hold a theatrical licence and are PRS registered. St John's is home to Henderson's at St John's Vegetarian Restaurant, the One World Shop, Cornerstone Bookshop and during August Edinburgh's Just Festival.

Sacred Arts Festival Music at St John’s, Princes St: Tango Mass and Magnificat
Mackintosh Choir, director Au Arias Glasgow’s award-winning Mackintosh Choir (Patron Sir John Rutter) was established in 2011 and is based in St John’s-Renfield Church, Kelvindale, Glasgow. The choir is directed by Au Arias, a Glasgow-based composer originally from Argentina, and currently also musical director of the Anstruther Philharmonic choir. Premiered in Glasgow in 2024 to wide acclaim, Arias’s Tango Mass forms the principal work in this recital, together with the world premier of his newly composed Magnificat. None
Sacred Arts Festival Drama at St John’s Princes Street: Doctor Faustus
Michael Daviot, Susan Chynoweth, Tim Barrow, Janet de Vigne Christopher Marlowe’s famous tragedy, Doctor Faustus, was first performed around 1595, just a few years after the first translation into English of a medieval legend, about a doctor-turned-necromancer who makes a pact with the devil. Marlowe brilliantly examines Faustus’s grandiose, but ultimately futile, intellectual ambitions. This rehearsed reading featuring Michael Daviot as Faust, Susan Chynoweth as Mephisto, Tim Barrow as Wagner, with Felicity Cullen and Lizz Spence, is directed by Janet de Vigne. Tuesday 6-7pm pre-performance discussion in St John’s hosted by the Scottish Network for Religion and Literature. None
