The List

St Margaret's House

A former NHS office block -- and from the street, it looks it -- St Margaret's House has been converted inside into a warren of studios, gallery spaces, and offices for everyone from the leaseholder and parent organisation, Edinburgh Palette, to the Edinburgh Judo Club. It was briefly known as Art's Complex until they reverted to the building's original name. With 200 studios and 9,000 ft² of gallery space, the sheer profusion of events in St Margaret's House can be bewildering, but with all that diversity there's something for everyone. Edinburgh College of Art has taken to leasing gallery space in the building for its own shows. The building features a print room and kiln facilities. The nearest railway station is Edinburgh Waverley, but given that it's more than a mile and a half away, by far the quickest access is by road. Lothian Bus routes 4, 5, 15, 15a, 26, x26, 44, 44a, 45 and 113 all stop outside on London Road, and pedestrian access is by a footbridge.

Sculpted Seashores

22 May 2026 - 22 May 2026

Dive into a world of texture, colour, and movement in this 1-day Sculpted Seashores workshop. You’ll use an exciting mix of free-motion quilting, heat-reactive materials, and dissolvable fabrics to create a rich, tactile seascape that practically comes to life. Let your creativity flow as you create your sculpted seashore to capture all the elements of the beach using a stunning blend of fabric, stitch, and heat-altered materials. Perfect for those with some experience in free-motion embroidery What's it about? You’ll start with a painted-fabric background, then quilt it with free-motion embroidery to recreate ripples in the sand. Learn how to add striking 3-dimensional details that truly bring your scene to life: Pebbles & Rock Textures – Paint and manipulate heat-reactive materials that blister and bubble under a heat gun, transforming into realistic pebbles and rocky textures. Waves and Water Effects – Use heated plastics and layered film to create shimmering, translucent surf, gently lapping the shoreline. Seaweed & Fronds – Stitch delicate tendrils of underwater plant life using free-motion embroidery on dissolvable film. Watch your threads float free when the stabiliser disappears like magic in water. Who's it for? This class is ideal for those who already have prior experience in free-motion embroidery and want to expand their skills into mixed-media textiles and 3-dimensional textile techniques. Ideally, you'll have taken my 1-day Free-Motion Embroidery workshop and are ready to dive deeper into the world of textile art and surface design. You’ll experiment with new materials and techniques in a fun, supportive environment – and leave with a beautiful, tactile piece of mixed-media textile art inspired by the sea. Whether you're a quilter or just looking to explore new creative ideas, this class offers something for everyone. All materials provided – just bring your creativity! This class will challenge you to create a unique sculpted seashore textile art piece. Whether you're looking to refine your existing skills or try something completely new, this workshop offers the perfect balance of creativity and technical expertise. What You’ll Learn: Heat-sensitive fabrics: there are a range of substances that will blister and bubble when heat is applied. These will be used to create the pebbles. Dissolvable Fabrics: We’ll introduce dissolvable fabrics to bring your creation to life. Using water-soluble stabilizer, you'll stitch 3D elements to complement the quilted base. Once completed, the stabilizer will be dissolved, leaving behind delicate, textured details that add depth and interest to your artwork, bringing your sculpted seashore to life. Pro Tips & Tricks: Our expert instructor will guide you through the process, offering tips on free-motion quilting and stitching with dissolvable fabrics. You'll learn how to manipulate tension, experiment with quilting patterns, and create stunning 3D textures.
Ocean of Her

Ocean of Her

18 Apr 2026 - 25 Apr 2026

'Ocean of Her' is an exhibition showcasing the newest body of work by Edinburgh-based artist and art therapist Jessica Kirkpatrick. Supported by the RSA’s Blackadder Travel Award and the Hope Scott Trust, this work was made in response to the artist’s recent residency in Teotihuacan, Mexico, where she engaged in sacred site work and Toltec practices. Coming off the heels of her recent certification as an art therapy practitioner, the exhibition is also an opportunity for Kirkpatrick to debut a new hybrid identity as artist, healer, and facilitator. The exhibition comprises a multi-media installation of drawings and cyanotypes made both in Mexico and Edinburgh, a time-based video work, and a series of paintings which are a departure from her earlier, more narrative work - embracing the kinaesthetic, haptic and psychic dimensions of the canvas. Rather than pursuing aesthetic perfection or technical mastery, Kirkpatrick works through process, presence, and emotional truth. Each brush mark becomes an act of devotion—a tactile anchor into attentive awareness. In these works, the canvas functions not only as a surface for images but as a psychic frame in which sensation, memory, and intuition can unfold. (Free and open to the public)
