The Royal Wind Music - Recorder Ensemble
The Royal Wind Music is a unique recorder consort based in the Netherlands, renowned for its vibrant performances and deep exploration of Renaissance and early Baroque repertoire. Founded in 1997 by Paul Leenhouts, the ensemble is made up of young professional recorder players from across the world, many of whom met as students at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Performing entirely from memory, the group brings an extraordinary sense of freedom, energy, and interaction to its concerts, often playing on a remarkable collection of Renaissance-style recorders ranging from 15 cm to over 3 meters in length. Dedicated to reviving forgotten repertoire and breathing new life into familiar works, The Royal Wind Music is known for its imaginative programming and rich, organ-like sound. The ensemble tours internationally and has released several acclaimed recordings. It also runs educational projects and its own biennial open recorder festival, showcasing the versatility and expressive range of the recorder family. Portrait of Albrecht Drer A musical biography of the master (14711528) 2021 marked the 550th anniversary of the birth of Albrecht Drer, one of the leading artists of the Renaissance, following his steps from his birthplace Nuremberg to Italy and the Low Countries and playing music with a thematic connection to his drawings, paintings and engravings. This programme will feature music associated with the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Drer's patron, and compositions published in Nuremberg and Venice. We also connect a few of his works, like Melencolia I, Praying Hands and his self-portraits to songs and motets which are as impressive and moving as Drer's own works. Dvorak

Dvorak

12 Jul 2025 - 12 Jul 2025

Come and Join us for an all- Dvok Programme. We start with Carnival Overture. The title conjures up an image of circus / clowns / festivals but this was not Dvok's intention. He was trying to portray the Carnival of life and nature. We then play a selection of his Slavonic dances ; inspired by the rhythms and idioms of folk music nd dance from Bohemia, these are original rather than arrangements or quotations from the traditional pieces of the area. Despite Symphony No 9 ("From the New World") being better known, his Symphony No 7 is regarded by many in the know as being greater. Dvok was very much in favour of independence of the Czech nation from the Austria - Hungarian empire - something that was not to happen until 1918. The first performance took place in London in 1885 with Dvorak himself conducting.
