What's On @ Star and Shadow Cinema

Fortitude Valley + Marketplace + Yeavering Bells
Fortitude Valley is the brainchild of Laura Kovic. Taking influence from the likes of The Beths, The Go-Go's and Pavement, what results is a ludicrously addictive cocktail of heart-stopping indie-punk power-pop melody and a back catalogue of songs thatll be living in your head, rent free, for evermore. The band have been making waves in the local scene over the past few years playing all over the UK, sharing the stage with the likes of Allo Darlin', Los Campesinos!, Gruff Rhys and The Wave Pictures. Hartlepool's Marketplace have become renowned for their own brand of indie pop masterpieces and have earned their devoted fanbase along the way. Off the back of engaging headline shows, the band have recently been invited to support big names including Alfie Templeman, Swim Deep, The Lottery Winners and Abbie Ozard, as well as earning slots at various festivals across the country. Yeavering Bells are a 5-piece indie pop band from Newcastle. Inspired by equal parts alt-country, fuzzy pop and hushed folk, the band are releasing an EP in June 2025.

Tashi Dorji with support from Mariam Rezaei and Posset
Tashi Dorji is a Bhutanese guitarist and improvisational musician known for his avant-garde and experimental (read: deeply gnarly, finely arty) approach to music. Tashis idiosyncratic take on the instrument, one defined by movement and profound openness to technique, adds up to a post-colonial disembowlment of guitar traditions that stands Tashinext de- and re-constructionist giants as various as Derek Bailey, John Fahey and Bill Orcutt. His latest solo album, We Will Be Wherever The Fires Are Lit, came out on Drag City last year. In addition to his solo work, Dorji has collaborated with the likes of Joe McPhee, Alex Zhang Hungtai, Steve Noble and Susie Ibarra. Support comes from Newcastle's own legend of the turntables Mariam Rezaei. A multi-award-winning composer, turntablist and performer working across experimental new music, free improvisation, mutant club music and hip-hop, she has been described by The Wire as one of the most technically adept and creatively daring artists to use the turntable as a musical instrument. She previously led experimental arts projects TOPH, TUSK FRINGE and TUSK NORTH. Our DJ for the evening will be the mighty Posset aka Joe Murray, who will be hooking up the Dictaphones and Walkmen for a cassette set.
