A royal fortress and prison which held King Charles I in the months prior to his trial, this motte-and-bailey castle is situated near Newport on the Isle of Wight. On show are donkeys, a fascinating museum and an Edwardian garden. There's free parking nearby, bus access, and ferries from the mainland.
