Life Drawing at Summerhall

Life Drawing at Summerhall

28 Apr 2026 - 15 Jul 2026

I'm no good at drawing but i think i might like it anyway? Here's what happens: whether you're a seasoned pro or don't know a pencil from a pen, we welcome all ages and all abilities - ESPECIALLY those of you who think you have NO abilities whatsoever. What is the structure of the session? We begin with a short guided breathing exercise to help us relax those shoulders, and launch straight in to the drawing after that. Poses are between 3 and 20 minutes long (up to 30 on Tuesdays). The session is not tutored, meaning you're left to your own devices, but you're welcome to speak to me (or whoever is sat near you- make a pal!) about your work at the break time. Or feel free to join us at the bar for a chin wag after the session! Can i get a ticket on the door? We sell out most weeks; please buy a ticket in advance. On-the-door tickets are not guaranteed. It's £12/£8/£7. See below for more ticket info/T&Cs. Where is the session, actually? We're in the gorgeous wooden-pewed Anatomy Lecture Theatre - it's a cosy space with great acoustics for our carefully curated playlists of eclectic tunes. What do i need to bring? We supply various drawing paraphernalia to borrow (including boards and fixative), and you can buy A3 paper as well as lovely sketchbooks of different sizes. Do bring your favourite tools if you have them - but it's equally fine to turn up with nothing at all. Can i take drinks in with me? You can bring in bevvies from the Summerhall Bar or the MF Coffee shop (which does lovely hot drinks! but only opens late on a Tuesday). You can't bring your own alcohol in or it contravenes Summerhall's licensing. Thank you for your understanding. Ticket prices We don't ask for proof of income, but we do ask that you are honest. It's possible to be a wealthy student or pensioner. Belonging to these categories doesn't mean you automatically fall into the concession bracket if your bank balance may say otherwise. Likewise, you may be a fully fledged adult on a minimum wage job, or be between jobs, or chronically unemployed. In short, use the lower priced tickets if you need them. We are also newly offering 'pay it forward' tickets. Do you run discount schemes? Affordability is extremely important to us. We have loyalty cards where your 10th session is free. You can also bulk buy 5 sessions at a time and get £1 off per session. If you have a bulk-buy card, or would like to buy one, you can still book online to reserve a seat by selecting the 'bulk buy' ticket which reserves a space without charging you. We will then sell you a bulk card and tick it off when you turn up at the event. Refunds/exchanges You can exchange your ticket for a different date if you realise you can't make it up until 5.30pm on the day. Refunds up til the day before. Waiting list/cancellations/door spaces There are no guaranteed door spaces if the event sells out online. Citizen Ticket have a waiting list function which will keep you informed if any new spaces come up. LATECOMINGS The cut off time for a guaranteed seat if you have an online ticket is 6.55pm - after which your ticket is non-refundable and your space will be released to anyone waiting at the door. This is to make sure we can start on time. At 7 sharp our doors shut and you will have to wait til the break to enter. That is so that the space can be calm, contained, and feel safe for models and sketchers. If you know you'll arrive after that time and have an online ticket you can message me in advance (before 6.30pm) via the Reconfigure instagram page, email me at [email protected], or text 07913673555 and we'll be gracious if we can. You will be working outdoors for some of the time. Exposure times will depend on the strength of the sun on the day. Bring lunch or head to the cafe during the lunch break.
Art and Spirituality Workshop

Art and Spirituality Workshop

14 May 2026 - 14 May 2026

Drawing as a means of defining the ephemeral, to describe contemplation, in parallel to movement, meditation or prayer will be explored. Using “drawing” as a verb as well as a noun, allows us to explore our personal lives. The course focusses on creativity to fulfil spiritual needs in a divided world. About Janet McKenzie Artist / author Janet McKenzie has lived in Scotland for 38 years. She has a multidisciplinary practice and has written extensively on contemporary art; editor Studio International (2000-2013). As an author her books and artist interviews focus on the immediacy of drawing and how one can assert self within the context of loss. As a visual artist she works in wood ash, collage, paint and chainsaw woodcuts. Her images, instinctively conceived, manifest her psychological space and states of mind. Her practice (writing and making) focuses on identity and the way, art can help to facilitate the defining of self in periods of isolation and during periods of bereavement. She continues to merge practice and critique, to explore roles played by women in key transitional situations, out-with conventional art audiences, to address disempowerment, memorialisation and loss.
Self Inner And Outer Landscapes Workshop
Giving form to invisible experiences is achieved through meditation, prayer, music, poetry. Each participant will be given methods and means through experimentation and discussion, to describe and express their inner life. Diary entries will be used to include thoughts and objects in a random, stream of consciousness like style: observations, daily ephemera, recurrent thoughts. Dear Wendy

Dear Wendy

3 May 2026 - 4 May 2026

I hold my breath and wonder what it would feel like to just stop.” Dear Wendy is a new autobiographical piece written and performed by Cat Johnston about breathing, making sense of yourself, and looking for answers in a world that often doesn’t feel like it’s listening. Part letter, part spoken-word confession, part visceral, sensory experience – the piece is an intimate and quietly confronting exploration of both the physical mechanics of breath, and breathing as a political statement and rallying cry. Moving through memory and guided exhalation, Dear Wendy interrogates taking up space, finding your voice, and looking for the good wherever you can. Following its premier at Summerhall, Dear Wendy will tour to Krakow International Theatre Festival in Poland, and Babel International Festival of Performing Arts in Târgoviște, Romania. The average person takes around 20,000 breaths a day. Dear Wendy is about learning to notice them.

Laughing Out Lonely

18 Aug 2026 - 2 Sept 2026

The faceless existence of life on the internet is given a voice in this thrilling new solo opera by the award-winning composing team Matilde Böcher and Asger Kudahl. LOL – Laughing Out Lonely is a portrait of contemporary loneliness. With a universal relevance, and a tour de tour performance from acclaimed countertenor Morten Grove Frandsen, this modern opera is a thought-provoking mirror of our digital age. Frandsen amazes as the embodiment of a myriad of outsiders including the girl with The Fucking Ugly Face, who cuts herself to forget her pain, or The Lamb, a shameful boy who dreams of being slaughtered. LOL takes the audience into the darkest corners of the internet, where misogynists, self-harmers, racists, and other marginalized existences have found an absurd community. Created using English lyrics that are based on posts from young people on social media, and staged as a theatrical echo chamber where the audience is part of the setting, LOL is a compelling work that is relevant for audiences of all ages. Composers: Matilde Böcher & Asger Kudahl Concept & directing: Louise Beck Countertenor: Morten Grove Frandsen Set design: Josefine Else Larsen Costume design: Roe Ørslev Lighting design: Jeppe Lawaetz
