Ben Crosland is one of the Norths most experienced jazz musicians, having been leading bands for over 30 years. He has worked as a sideman with many leading US and UK soloists including Jean Toussaint, Ken Peplowski, Harry Allen, George Masso, John Surman, Henry Lowther, Stan Sulzman, Frank Ricotti and John Etheridge. Founded in 2006, the Quartet features Rod Mason (saxophones), Dean Stockdale (piano) and Dave Tyas (drums), all leading figures on the northern jazz scene. Each member of the band is a leader in his own right and this relaxed joining of kindred spirits produces an open, mature and energetic performance in which there are no conflicting egos, only a desire to enjoy each others company, play good music and entertain. To celebrate 20 years together as a band, the Quartet has recorded an album of new compositions by Crosland, Wooltown Reflections, with special guest trumpeter Steve Waterman, and will be featuring this music in concerts this year. The band will also feature material by leading contemporary composers including Jaco Pastorius, Bob Mintzer, Mike Mainieri and Don Grolnick.

Tom Waits for no Man

Tom Waits for no Man

16 Oct 2026 - 16 Oct 2026

The Old Black Cat Jazz Club meets each month, on the third Friday of the month, for relaxed performances in beautiful surroundings. All are welcome. Tom Waits for No Man is a homage to the song writing prowess of one of Americas most enduring composers. They dont seek to impersonate Waits work, but rather, celebrate it. Vocalist and composer Lindsay Hannon has chosen and re-arranged a selection of songs from the legendary Tom Waits decades spanning back catalogue. From the tender nostalgia of Martha, the gospel infused Picture in a frame and the variously, dark, comedic and lewd content of such numbers as The Piano has been Drinking, Way down in a Hole, and Christmas card from a Hooker in Minneapolis; this outstanding live show is both intimate and raucous, playful and moving, and appeals to both established Waits fans and newcomers alike. Band personnel: Lindsay Hannon (vocal), Alan Law (piano), Paul Grainger (double bass), Brendan Murphy (percussion)
