The List

Tate Modern

The gallery in the former Bankside Power Station houses the national collection of international modern art, spanning 1900 to the present day, including major works by Dali, Picasso, Matisse, Rothko and Warhol. Guided tours run daily and special exhibitions and events take place throughout the year. Visit The Tanks to see performances, interactive art and video installations or The Turbine Hall for large-scale sculpture and site-specific installations. The new Tate Modern building -- now dubbed The Switch House -- opens in June 2016. The new building gives the Tate Modern 60% extra space to work with and is expected to increase visitors by one million per year. There is a shop onsite and a bar and kitchen serving British classics. Note: Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Tate Modern is closed to the public from 17 March--1 May 2020.

Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo

26 Jun 2026 - 18 Jul 2026

This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and, at times, tragic life. Guided with interview, commentary and Frida’s own words, Exhibition on Screen uncovers that this, however, was not a life defined by tragedy. "Seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo..." Featuring key exhibitions and interviews with world renowned Kahlo curators, this film explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. Using cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life, men, women, politics and her cultural heritage. We might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?

Tate Modern Workshop for Home Education Students: Surrealism. Mixed Age Range
This session is for the home education group, with a mixed age range. The aim is this group can accommodate families where children would normally split over multiple sessions because of the age range. This way the adult doesn't have to attend all the sessions, or make multiple visits to the museum. To help best support the participants I will aim for the session to have a natural break after 1 so families with younger partipants can opt to leave if the length is too long for them. Everyone is welcome to stay for the final 30 minutes. The total length of the session is 1.5 hours. This month we will be looking at Surrealism. Please arrive at Tate Modern 15 minutes before the start of the session. Daniel will provide all materials. An adult will need to be present with the children, and will count towards to the ticket allocation. You are welcome to team up with other families and have just one adult for a few children. This is due to Safe Guarding restrictions required by the gallery. For this age group 1 adult is welcome to accompany 10 children.
