Attention All Shipping - A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast
As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster Charlie Connelly’s hilarious and informative show brings the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he regards as the greatest invention of the modern age. How did a weather forecast for ships capture the hearts of a nation, from salty old sea dog to insomniac landlubber? How is it possible for ‘rain later’ to be ‘good’? And where the hell is North Utsire? Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares riproaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas – the times he was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government and sang sea shanties with Tom Hardy in a Manx hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled the pints - and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement. Inspired by Charlie’s bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide, this pacy, moving and hilarious show takes you all the way from Viking to South-East Iceland to ensure the shipping forecast will never sound the same again. “Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with…He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it.” Fi Glover, broadcaster “Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging…I actually sent him a fan letter - and I've never done that to anyone in my life before.” Bernard Sumner, New Order “I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent. Sou’westers optional.” Corrie Corfield, BBC Radio 4
Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

4 Oct 2025 - 4 Oct 2025

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair. This is the true story of ‘Fair Cop’ Alfie’s big plan to transition from the BBC radio waves to TV star. Could it be done? Or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

Presented by Speakers from the Edge ‘Touching the Void’ mountaineer, Simon Yates, is a veteran of over eighty expeditions to high/remote mountains around the globe and shows no signs of slowing down. This is his story of the last decade, of new adventures and climbs in the far north and south, along with summits in South America, Central Asia and the Himalaya. In 2023, Simon travelled with legendary British mountaineer Mick Fowler to attempt the un-climbed north face of Patkhor in Tajikistan, but contracted food poisoning from their freeze-dried food on just the second day. After some debate, they continued, but this was just the beginning of a series of events that would see them run out of food, retreat below the summit in a storm and Simon taking a bone-breaking 100m fall during the descent. After two days of lying on the glacier waiting for a helicopter, rescuers finally arrived but were unable to carry Simon down. Somehow, he would need to summon the energy for the painful three day walk to safety. A survival classic, with the added twists of a fast-paced thriller.

Lodestar Trio

Lodestar Trio

11 Jan 2026 - 11 Jan 2026

Lodestar: Folk-Baroque Trio blends Scandinavian Strings - Sunday 11th January 2026 at 7pm Lodestar Trio is a ground-breaking new collaboration between stars of the Scandinavian folk scene Erik Rydvall and Olav Mjelva, and British virtuoso Max Baillie. Together they hone a spirit of groove and improvisation through Baroque music by bringing it into a folk sound-world where the Swedish nyckelharpa and the Norwegian hardanger fiddle meet the violin. With renewed interpretations of baroque classics (Bach, Lully, Couperin), folk tunes and new compositions, they push the boundaries of their mystical and magical Scandinavian string instruments. The trio skilfully showcase the dexterity of each instrument, bringing out new qualities, whilst paying tribute to the roots of a much-honoured musical period. The trios music is born where Folk and Baroque meet. Together they rediscover the music of Bach and other Baroque composers with the spirit of improvisation, and the groove of a folk fiddle band. Amongst this repertoire they interweave traditional folk tunes and original pieces, celebrating the three distinct sibling voices of their instruments. They have played live on the BBC, have been featured on Classic Fm and Norwegian national radio, and released their debut album for the Naxos label in the Summer of 2022. Tickets: Advance Adults 24.00, (on the door on the night they will cost 28) Under 25 years 5.00 Children are welcome if, like adults, they can sit quietly and enjoy the music.

Pride and Prejudice Theatrical re telling featuring pianist Melvyn Tan
Saturday 22nd November 2025 Pride and Prejudice, an adaptation in words and music is the theatrical retelling of Jane Austens most famous work. The enduring story of the romance between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy is read by Harriet Walter in a simple but intimate drawing-room setting, in much the same way that Jane herself first read the story aloud to the Austen family and their closest friends. Weaving around those words is Carl Davis' magical score from the much loved BBC TV drama series of the 1990s, performed by Melvyn Tan (pianist on the original BBC soundtrack) and violinistIrene Duval. Combining the words of Jane Austens most popular novel with one of the most beloved musical soundtracks of the 1990s, Pride & Prejudice is a captivating entertainment full of laugh-out-loud moments and wonderful surprises. The book has been abridged by novelist and Austen biographer, Gill Hornby. Utterly delightful and wonderfully entertaining. Jane Austen fans will doubtless be in their element Limelight Magazine
