Keith James A haunting and immaculately crafted concert The Songs of Nick Drake Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all this countrys acoustic Singer-Songwriters. He has given us timeless songs that shed all the tears of life within their fragile yet perfect lines. He recorded three cherished Albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974 aged only 26 his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his unique music, Nick Drake has become a national treasure. Several meticulously compiled Biographies look at every aspect of Nicks life and music, throwing light on many shadowy corners of mystery and supposition. Two decades have now passed since Singer/Guitarist Keith James first astonished the whole Country with his stunningly beautiful series of concerts. He was the first artist ever to bring these intriguing songs to Theatres and Arts Venues across the UK, and remains to this day, the foremost artist devoted to performing Nicks music in its pure live acoustic form. Piano Trio - William Howard with Matthew and Emma Denton
We welcome back three great friends of the Goods Shed, Matthew Denton (violin) and Emma Denton (cello), members of the Carducci String Quartet, and William Howard (piano). They offer another varied programme of piano trios following their successful performance here in January last year. To mark the 50thanniversary of the Shostakovichs death they will perform his haunting Second Piano Trio, completed in 1944. The tragic character of this powerful work reflects the composers response to the horrors of the war and also his grief following the death of a close friend. Alongside this Trio are two completely contrasting works. Beethovens Ghost Trio owes its nickname (not Beethovens own) to the eerie writing of its slow movement, which itself is framed by two joyously extrovert movements. Dvoks much loved Dumky Trio is a feast of folk dance and melody, which carries us along in alternate moods of reflection and exuberance. Programme Beethoven Piano Trio in D major Op,.70 No.1 The Ghost (22) Shostakovich Piano Trio No.2 in E minor Op.67 (30) Interval Dvok Piano Trio No.4 in E minor Dumky (32) Advance Tickets: Adult 24.00 Under 25 years of Age 15.00 - on the door on the night they will cost 28.00 and 20 respectively

Attention All Shipping - A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast
As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster Charlie Connelly’s hilarious and informative show brings the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he regards as the greatest invention of the modern age. How did a weather forecast for ships capture the hearts of a nation, from salty old sea dog to insomniac landlubber? How is it possible for ‘rain later’ to be ‘good’? And where the hell is North Utsire? Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares riproaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas – the times he was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government and sang sea shanties with Tom Hardy in a Manx hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled the pints - and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement. Inspired by Charlie’s bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide, this pacy, moving and hilarious show takes you all the way from Viking to South-East Iceland to ensure the shipping forecast will never sound the same again. “Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with…He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it.” Fi Glover, broadcaster “Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging…I actually sent him a fan letter - and I've never done that to anyone in my life before.” Bernard Sumner, New Order “I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent. Sou’westers optional.” Corrie Corfield, BBC Radio 4
Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

17 May 2025 - 11 Jul 2025

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair. This is the true story of ‘Fair Cop’ Alfie’s big plan to transition from the BBC radio waves to TV star. Could it be done? Or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

Simon Yates: Pleasure & Pain

Simon Yates: Pleasure & Pain

4 Oct 2025 - 24 Oct 2025

Presented by Speakers from the Edge ‘Touching the Void’ mountaineer, Simon Yates, is a veteran of over eighty expeditions to high/remote mountains around the globe and shows no signs of slowing down. This is his story of the last decade, of new adventures and climbs in the far north and south, along with summits in South America, Central Asia and the Himalaya. In 2023, Simon travelled with legendary British mountaineer Mick Fowler to attempt the un-climbed north face of Patkhor in Tajikistan, but contracted food poisoning from their freeze-dried food on just the second day. After some debate, they continued, but this was just the beginning of a series of events that would see them run out of food, retreat below the summit in a storm and Simon taking a bone-breaking 100m fall during the descent. After two days of lying on the glacier waiting for a helicopter, rescuers finally arrived but were unable to carry Simon down. Somehow, he would need to summon the energy for the painful three day walk to safety. A survival classic, with the added twists of a fast-paced thriller.
