The man born John Wardle began his musical journey when he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious at Kingsway College, London in 1973. It was Vicious who not only nicknamed John 'Jah Wobble' after a drunken binge but also loaned him his first bass guitar. Lydon asked JW to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) in spring 1978. Wardle's distinctive 'low end' bass became the backbone of PiL's pioneering sound. After its follow-up, the exploratory yet sinister soundscapes of Metal Box, Wardle became disillusioned by politics within the band and their reluctance to play live. He eventually split from PiL in mid-1980 and embarked on a prolific solo career. Wobble is joined on stage by drummer Marc Layton-Bennett and Martin Chung.

Bad Manners

Bad Manners

22 May 2025 - 30 Jan 2026

Fronted by Buster Bloodvessel (born Douglas Trendle), the band was formed in 1976 while the members were at school together, and among their early incarnations were known as Stoop Solo and the Sheet Starchers. None of the members had any formal musical training, not even the ability to play any instruments. They were popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when lots of similar ska bands filled the charts. Some of their hits include 'My Girl Lollipop', 'Lip Up Fatty', 'Special Brew' and 'Ne-Ne-Na-Na-Na-Na-Nu-Nu'. One of the main reasons for their notoriety was because of their outlandish, larger-than-life, huge-tongued & shaven-headed front man. Buster´s exploits got them banned from the British TV chart show Top of the Pops (which included dressing as Henry VIII and singing to a blow-up doll for the song 'Lorraine', pouring a large can of baked beans over his head, and dressing in a can-can dancer´s dress to promote their single 'Can-Can').

The Anti Nowhere League started up in 1980 in Royal Tunbridge Wells. They released their debut single ´´Streets of London´´ b/w ´´So What´´ in 1981. The single reached number 48 in the UK charts and would have probably got higher had it not been seized by the Police´s Obscenity Squad due to the profanity-laden b-side. ´´So What´´ has since become the band´s anthem and has been covered by Metallica who play the track regularly to this day in concert. This was followed up by their seminal debut album ´´We are...the League´´ in 1982 on WXYZ Records. This was followed by their ´´Live in Yugoslavia´´ album but the band has split by the end of the 1980´s. Since reforming the band have released some incredible albums such as ´´The Horse is Dead´´, ´´Out Of Control´´, ´´The Road to Rampton´´ and more. In 2017 the Anti-Nowhere League have released their latest album ´´League Style ( Loosen Up )´´ which includes their own unique take on classi Ska & Reggae tunes such as ´´Long Shot Kick De Bucket´´, ´´Johnny Too Bad´´, ´´Suzanne Beware of the Devil´´ and more.

The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue, such as Amelia, Woodstock, A Case Of You, Song For Sharon, Edith And The Kingpin etc.!

Soft Machine

Soft Machine

9 May 2025 - 9 May 2025

Their work, from their earliest performances as a psychedelic band who were contemporaries of, and shared stages with, Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all the way to being one of Europe’s best known ‘fusion’ groups, has influenced several generations of bands, and continues to be name-checked by today’s hip experimentalists. Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 1960’s, the band’s spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeon holed and can move from powerful progressive jazz fusion to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz-rock to ambient loop music continues to make it both unique and totally contemporary.
Fat Dog

Fat Dog

1 Nov 2025 - 1 Nov 2025

Fat Dog’s particular brand of chaos seems a fine antidote to the remains of pent-up lockdown frustration. The collective scream has found a mouth; the potential energy has been activated. Joe’s singing, his words slurred and distorted in the time-honoured tradition of delta bluesmen, melds to Jazz’s wordless vocals, high and keening like some punk banshee princess, equal parts Grace Slick and Yoko Ono.
The K's

The K's

8 May 2025 - 8 Aug 2025

The K’s: Jamie Boyle (vocals/guitar); Ryan Breslin (guitar); Dexter Baker (bass); Jordan Holden (drums). These four young men are a word-of-mouth phenomenon that’s rapidly becoming too huge to ignore. On the surface, the appeal of The K’s seems simple: embodying the relatable frustrations of everyday Britain and its zero hours economy, yearning for a better life in escapist anthems like epic next single Landmines and breakthrough tune Glass Towns. But if creating timeless thrills really was so simple, other bands would rack up so many streams and routinely sell out tours, thanks to the frenzied fan community the band has nurtured. Their gigs are a guaranteed riot, but that shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s the immediately identifiable blueprint all special bands soon develop. Debut single Sarajevo is one of the few rock & roll songs to namecheck Austro-Hungary, notching up over 1.5 million streams in the process.
The Delines

The Delines

26 Mar 2026 - 26 Mar 2026

The Delines debut album Colfax surprised fans and critics alike. The band had only been together a week when they went into the studio and cut the record. Uncut gave it 9/10 stars and praised its widescreen romanticism, calling it the richest collection of songs Vlautin has written. Evoking the feel of a beat-up Dusty Springfield or a weary Rickie Lee Jones, Colfax made a dozen top ten records of the year lists and the Delines sold out venues in the UK, Ireland, and had successful tours in the Europe and Australia. The Guardian declared them the surprise hit of the End of the Road festival and then it all came to a stop.

The Wildhearts

The Wildhearts

24 May 2025 - 24 Jul 2025

For 3 decades The Wildhearts have remained at the forefront of the British rock scene. From their classic debut album ‘Earth Vs’ (voted number one album of the year in Kerrang! back in 1993, and number 20 in the best rock albums of all time in a Kerrang! Special in 2006), through to now with the release of ‘Renaissance Men’, their first full-length studio album in 10 years, their creative output and legendary live shows have been second to none. Although the 90’s saw the band covered like a living soap opera in the press with tales of sex, drugs, bust ups, fights (both with labels and themselves), splits, more drugs and a lot more controversy (one such incident including entering and then proceeding to trash the Kerrang! Offices!), the recent years have seen the band more focused than ever before and firing on all cylinders. The Wildhearts and their incendiary shows have cemented their reputation and legacy as one of the best bands the UK has ever produced. Welcoming back their long-time bandmate and brother Danny McCormack on bass; Ginger and CJ on guitars and vocals, with Ritch Battersby on drums released their new album ‘Renaissance Men’ on May 3rd to critical acclaim. “It’s The Wildhearts remembering what they do best” - 9 out 10, hailed Classic Rock, with Metal Hammer saying Renaissance Men is “the best thing they’ve made since their genius / batshit crazy debut, Earth Vs The Wildhearts, back in 1993. Actually, thats not true. It might be better.” While Kerrang! gave the album 4Ks, Planet Rock 5 stars and Vive Le Rock 10 out 10!

Walter Trout and Dan Patlansky

Walter Trout and Dan Patlansky

6 May 2025 - 11 May 2025

Walter Trout's backstory is a page-turner you won't want to put down. Five decades in the making; it is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years and brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion. There are feted early stints as gunslinger in bands from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to Canned Heat, and the solo career that’s still blazing a quarter-century later. The veteran bluesman has seen and done it all - plays earth shattering blues rock music. In only a little over a decade, Dan Patlansky has become one of the busiest and most respected blues artists to ever come out of South Africa. After his debut album which garnered Dan a reputation as a Blues-phenomenon, and his subsequent “Readers Choice” vote as “Best Blues Guitarist in Southern Africa”, Dan’s second album was released by EMI on the famed Blue Note label. Dan is one of the only South Africans to ever achieve “Blue Note” status and one of only six Fender endorsed guitarists in South Africa. Dan Patlansky, #1 Blues Rock Album 2016 by Blues Rock Review.
Walter Trout

Walter Trout

8 May 2025 - 8 May 2025

Walter Trout has been nothing short of prolific over the course of his seven decades on this Earth. He’s set to release his 29th solo album over a career that has spanned the globe, and delivered notoriety as one of the great purveyors of the blues and blues rock. Trout's history is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years, brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion, and the survival of an organ transplant few come back from. From 1973, when he left his New Jersey home headed to Los Angeles, he has followed a road that afforded him an opportunity to just play, sharing the stage as a sideman with Jesse Ed Davis, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulson, Joe Tex, and of course the great John Mayall (following a three year tenure in Canned Heat). When Trout walked away from the Bluesbreakers, he embarked on a solo career that has yielded a catalogue that has established a deep legacy in the world of Blues, Americana, and the realm of revered singer-songwriters. While many would slow down as they approach their 70th birthday, Trout continues to deliver inspired recordings, performances, and a voice that articulates relevant ideology and insights in to The World that inspires his deep perspective. There’s no autopilot emanating from Walter Trout, but a true a sense of growing momentum, elements of surprise, and repertoire that continues to be more compelling with each new creation.

The band started touring Europe in support of the album in April 2023. The art for the last two albums was created by Tool's guitarist Adam Jones. The Paradox Twin was formed by singer, songwriter, guitarist & keyboard player Danny Sorrel, who - following the writing of the band's debut album The Importance of Mr. Bedlam - walked into Outhouse Studio, the well-known recording studio run by producer and musician extraordinaire John Mitchell, for the recording. John was so impressed with what he heard that he suggested to Chris Hillman, John's partner in the White Star Records label, that they should release the album. Chris was as impressed as John was and so the band were signed to the label. The album was very well received with the video of the first single from the album, Planeta, gaining a nomination at the prestigious Progressive Music Awards even before the album had been released. The band went on to receive another nomination the following year in the best new artist's category. The album has gained the band a worldwide reputation, followed by glowing reviews and radio plays. The band has since released its much-anticipated follow up album Silence from Signals which - like their debut - has received outstanding reviews and is not to be missed! The forthcoming new album is now being recorded and more info about it will come soon...

As founding songwriter-in-chief Marco Coti Zelati, aka Maki explains, while the writing process for Lacuna Coil’s tenth studio record began in December, the record’s real creative birth coincided with the release of 2022’s Comalies XX, a 20th-anniversary reimagining of their landmark 2002 record, Comalies. Ed Tudor Pole

Ed Tudor Pole

17 May 2025 - 30 Nov 2025

If you think that punk music should be like a McDonalds burger, ie:- utterly predictable and the same every time then your view differs from Tenpole's! "The spirit of punk has always been there - it's something to do with rebellion, e.g. Jerry Lee Lewis or Keith Richards, just happens that in 1976 they named this spirit 'Punk'.! " say's Ed. Tenpole was glad to find out what he was at last, for he'd been playing guitar and trying to write great songs in that spirit since he was a boy, long before 1976 came along. "Punk is an attitude not a form of music, ask Steve Jones!! Say's Tenpole. " I date back to the birth of punk rock when it was all about being original, create your own look, and before the time when it became a competition to see which band could sound the most similar to another! I've always rebelled against uniformity. If it is just a simple formula then it is not subversive, and if there is no subversion, ladies & gentlemen, it ain't Punk!!" "At the moment Im trying to see how much excitement can be generated with a man, a guitar, & an audiences. If you have to label what I play, call it Rock'n'Roll. Ever onward my fellow being's! Avoid stagnation: whatever else it is, Punk is surely anti-stagnation!" "By the way, all your view's on what punk represents are as true & valid as mine, however different, we all think our opinion is the right one, but who can judge Come and see me play, listen to my stories ,ask me some questions. Im getting good now, but ultimately, it's down to YOU how good the gig is!!"

Snot

Snot

9 Aug 2025 - 14 Aug 2025

Snot is an American punk band from Santa Barbara, California, originally formed in 1995. Known for blending punk rock, hardcore, and funk influences, featured Lynn Strait as the charismatic lead vocalist, along with the lead guitarist Mikey Doling, bassist John Fahnestock, drummer Jamie Miller, and later, Sonny Mayo on guitar. The first full-length album, Get Some, released in 1997, became iconic for its aggressive sound and Strait's raw, confrontational lyrics. The album received praise for its energy and distinctive fusion of punk and metal elements, positioning Snot as part of the emerging nu-metal scene, alongside bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit, with whom they often shared the stage. Unfortunately, the band's career was cut short in 1998 when Lynn Strait tragically died in a car accident, along with his dog, Dobbs, who was featured on the cover of Get Some. Following Strait's death, the band dissolved, but Snot's impact continued, and Snot developed a devoted cult following. In 2000, Mikey Doling produced Strait Up, a tribute album that featured guest vocalists from various bands performing unreleased Snot tracks as a tribute to Strait's memory. Over the years, SNOT's music has maintained its influence within the punk and metal communities as the legendary punk band.

Von Hertzen Brothers

Von Hertzen Brothers

7 Aug 2025 - 9 Aug 2025

Von Hertzen Brothers have never been an easy band to categorise by genre. Their music is often and better illustrated in terms one might use to describe a novella, painting or a movie: Dynamic. Thought provoking. Magical. Nuanced. Expansive. Epic. Uplifting. So, it is fitting that these three Finnish brothers approached their 8th studio album ‘Red Alert in the Blue Forest’ from the perspective of three artists creating a joint exhibition. The resulting body of work, a double LP, reflects the brothers’ unique upbringing, love of nature and the global challenges faced by humanity. It’s understandable how a strong artistic temperament was instilled into these three siblings. Kie, Mikko and Jonne’s father, Hasse and uncle, Lasse von Hertzen both played in well-known Scandinavian bands in the 60’s and 70s. One of Kie’s godfathers was an early Finnish environmentalist pioneer, the other one a well-known artist and a sculptor. The boys spent their holidays at their family’s seaside cabin on Finnish coastland where they still spend time writing songs and exploring the nature. An inevitable mutual vision steeped in Finnish folklore, musical traditions, wildlife, and humanitarian causes is often evident in their songwriting.

Franck Carducci and The Fantastic Squad

Franck Carducci and The Fantastic Squad

12 Sept 2025 - 19 Sept 2025

The first album Oddity was full of promises for the start of an epic journey, but it is on stage where he starts to carve his signature – costumes, make-up, psychedelic atmospheres, humour and sensuality. Yes, you think of Genesis, of Alice Cooper and David Bowie, of Led Zeppelin and Pink-Floyd too. But eventually, you will no longer think of anybody else. Following the release of the highly anticipated 'Torn Apart', featuring special guest Steve Hackett (Genesis), the 'Tearing the Tour Apart' hit the road in Europe and Franck reinforced his show as one of the most irresistible in the rock scene. 2017 saw the release of a live DVD/BluRay of the tour, which, after about 100 dates, ended with a standing ovation on stage of the Loreley 'Night of the Prog' festival in front of 6000 people. Carducci, as Master of Ceremonies, leads his Rock n Roll Circus where each of his players embodies a side of his music. Who can explain how a 12 string guitar extra neck would be added to a bass guitar, how a powerful guitar riff would go with a hot belly dance, or a Mellotron solo would end up in a duel with a didgeridoo? Who can also explain how Achilles, guitar and sword in hand, would kidnap a sensual Alice from her Wonderland? However, let them pick you up and take you in the palm of their hands – you won’t want to leave until the very last note of the concert. Your senses will not be given a second of rest while these characters take you to a place where dreams are kings, emotions are queens and musical genres are crossed with no borders.

Orange Goblin

Orange Goblin

10 Dec 2025 - 17 Dec 2025

This is the sound of a band that have been together for over 20 years. It's the sound of a band that don't give a fuck about modern day trends and what the 'cool' kids are listening to. It's the sound of Orange Goblin digging really deep into our well of inspiration. In a world gone mad, there are few certainties to cling to. But one thing remains forever unwavering and true: Orange fucking Goblin. Diehard exponents of the noble art of heavy metal since 1995, the London-based quartet have spent the last two decades steadily but surely establishing themselves as one of the UK's most loved and respected bands. Emerging from the stoner rock explosion of the mid '90s, the band led the way for that scene on British shores, kicking off with classic debut album Frequencies From Planet Ten in 1997 and continuing with a steady stream of critically acclaimed albums that boldly and gleefully blurred the lines between stoner, doom, black, crust and southern rock, while always fervently saluting the old school heavy metal flag and the sacred Sabbathian code. Widely admired as one of the most ludicrously thunderous and entertaining live bands on the planet, Orange Goblin have paid their dues and earned the right to be regarded as a heavy metal institution. The band's last two albums, A Eulogy For The Damned (2012) and Back From The Abyss (2014) have further cemented their reputation and taken their popularity to new heights, aided by high profile festival slots all over the world. Since the release of Back From The Abyss, the band's feet have barely touched the ground: a full European tour with doom legends Saint Vitus, a full US trek with Down, headline shows across Europe and triumphant appearances at Download, Bloodstock, Ozzfest, Wacken Open Air and many more. Nominated for 'Best British Band' at last year's Metal Hammer Golden Gods ceremony, at which they also performed, Orange Goblin have never been more in demand. As a result, the arrival of their ninth studio album, The Wolf Bites Back, is a very big deal. After a four-year wait, fans are about to feel the full power of a band at the peak of their powers and with the wind in their sails. Sometimes you just have to make a statement and I believe that this album is that statement, avows frontman Ben Ward. We just wanted a title that represents the feelings we tried to get across with the material on the album and it seemed to fit perfectly. It's vicious, it's dangerous, it's wild and it's unashamedly heavy metal and hard rocking! A lot of bands seem to be ashamed to say that these days, there are too many hipsters and posers that are afraid of the heavy metal tag yet like to revel in the imagery. Fuck that, people should be proud to be heavy metal! If you have blood in your veins, it will be impossible to avoid a sudden rush of heavy metal pride when album opener Sons Of Salem rips into gear: a turbocharged upgrade for the Orange Goblin formula, it ushers in an album full of diversity and daring but one that is powered by metal, pure and simple. From the insistent, fire-breathing groove of the title track and Renegade's balls-out rampage to the psychedelic fog of Ghosts Of The Primitives and Suicide Division's two minutes of snot-spraying Bathory-ized hardcore, The Wolf Bites Back will scratch every conceivable heavy metal itch while simultaneously making most sensible people want to run through a brick wall. Recorded at Orgone Studios in rural Bedfordshire with esteemed underground guru Jaime 'Gomez' Arellano at the controls, the new opus comes adorned with a raw but crystalline sound that has maximised Orange Goblin's extraordinary eight-legged chemistry. Gomez has a very new, custom built studio in a really remote part of the English countryside so there are zero distractions and we were totally focused on the job at hand, says Ben. We gave ourselves plenty of time so the vibe was relaxed and almost experimental. We were trying out new sounds and working with equipment and instruments that we may not have considered in the past. Gomez was like a fifth member of the band, constantly making useful suggestions. I think that the band's playing and songwriting on this album are the best they've ever been. It's a huge wall of sound and Gomez has recorded and mixed it perfectly. Its rampaging musical contents aside, The Wolf Bites Back is also an album of pitch-black horrors and warped nightmares, as Ben Ward channels his fury and fire through twisted tales of ghouls, witches, warriors and sinister ne'er-do-wells. At the heart of the album, however, lies a sincere and heartfelt frustration at the state of the world and humanity's resistance to getting our collective shit together. I think this is the most honest album I have written, admits Ben. There are still fantasy themes but a lot of that fantasy is derived from real life frustration and anger. There are strong themes of rebellion, fighting back, revenge and making yourself a better person. There are underlying themes that the whole world and humanity in general is fucked! This time I was reading a lot of science-fiction, stuff like Philip K. Dick and other writers with a bleak, nihilistic view of what the future holds. Whether it's because of politics, science, religion or just the simple fact that the majority of human beings are stupid and ignorant, we are all doomed and the world is a fucked up place! As the world burns, Orange Goblin continue to give us fresh reasons to live. The Wolf Bites Back is a flat-out triumph for a band that refuse to deviate from their stated mission of bring joyous, blood 'n' thunder metal to the masses. With fistfuls of killer new songs and momentum propelling them onward and upward, the future is looking bright and busier than ever. We have Stone Free Festival, Hellfest, Alcatraz, Summer Breeze, Impetus, Rock Im Wald and a lot more scheduled for the summer, Ben states. Then we are looking to tour the UK in late October, early November, to promote the album here properly. We're looking forward to people finally being able to hear this new material. It's been a long four years since the last album but we definitely feel that this one has been worth the wait!
Nekrogoblikon

Nekrogoblikon

17 Sept 2025 - 30 Sept 2025

The self-proclaimed "Kings of Goblin Metal," Los Angeles, California's Nekrogoblikon are melodic hard rock pranksters who deploy gnarly death metal earworms filled with crafty hooks, claw-pumping choruses, lightning-fast riffs, and over the top, EDM-style keyboard flourishes. With their ostentatious goblin hypeman John Goblikon, the band takes cues from hyperbolic horror-metal enthusiasts like GWAR, Finntroll, and Dethklok, while maintaining an affable, self-referential sense of humor. The group's early outings, like 2007's Goblin Island, were largely low-fidelity affairs, but by the early 2010s Nekrogoblikon were operating at a far higher technical level, and employing a rotating cast of talented players. Founded in 2006 by Nicky Calonne(vocals, keyboards) and Tim Lyakhovetskiy (guitar), the duo self-produced their debut album, the relatively lo-fi Goblin Island, in Lyakhovetskiy's basement. The LP was released in 2007, and an expanded lineup was quickly assembled to help flesh out the fledgling group's audacious live shows. The more technically proficient Stench arrived in 2011, and included the single "No One Survives" -- the video became a viral hit. The Power EP was issued the following year, and in 2014 the band joined Limp Bizkit, Crossfaith, and HECK on the Kerrang! Tour. In 2015 they released the concept LP Heavy Meta via their own Mystery Box label, and in 2018 Nekrogoblikon issued their fourth studio long-player, Welcome to Bonkers.

Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr

19 Jun 2025 - 20 Jun 2025

The early 1980s weren’t the best of times to be an aspiring guitar player. Twenty years earlier, the head of Decca records, Dick Rowe, had made the biggest A&R gaff in pop history with the legendary clanger “Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein”. But in 1982, Rowe’s apocalyptic prophecy suddenly sounded frighteningly real. After the initial roar and storm of punk, British pop music had succumbed to a synthesizer-driven pursuit of new waves and new romanticisms. In an age of Vienna’s, Tainted Love’s and Too Shy’s, the pure sound of six-stringed, melodic pop – be it as amorous as The Beatles, as lascivious as The Stones or as giddy as T.Rex – was fast becoming a lost cause with few willing to fight its corner That all changed with Johnny Marr. Born in Manchester on Halloween 1963, of Irish heritage, Marr’s earliest musical memories are the get-togethers of his extended family, perhaps – as his early guitar idol Marc Bolan would sing – dancing himself out of the womb to the traditional strains of Black Velvet Band. As a child he’d be spellbound by his parents’ record collection: the forlorn dramas of Del Shannon, the prison doldrums of Johnny Cash and the heart-popping bliss of his mother’s Four Tops singles. All these influences would linger at the back of the boy Marr’s brain, waiting for the command to attack his finger tips at a later date. That date finally came during the early summer of 1982 when Marr, just 18 years-old, formed The Smiths after seeking out the reclusive and elusive Stretford poet, Morrissey. Musically, the sound of The Smiths was a guitar noise nostalgically familiar yet equally dumbfounding in its pristine newness. The tunes were giant, euphoric and instantaneous but woven together with such nimble flair it appeared as if the guitar was playing Marr instead of the other way round. Lost for words, early critics of the day undersold him with the words “jingle” and “jangle” when, had they tried, they might better have described the sound of Johnny Marr as that of Van Gogh’s Starry Night in angry animation. Or the echo of diamonds raining down upon zinc-plated cobblestones. Or the sound of kitchen cutlery bouncing off a gaffer-taped Telecaster (which, ridiculous as it sounds, is how Marr achieved some of the resonant clangs in This Charming Man.) Throughout The Smiths’ five year lifespan between the summers of 1982 and 1987, Marr continually challenged not only pop conventions but his skills as a player and a composer. Crucially, he and Morrissey formed The Smiths as a songwriting partnership in the great Brill Building tradition of Leiber and Stoller. His ambition, first and foremost, was to write great music: the fact that he could execute the tunes inside his head with unmatched grace was simply an added blessing. As a composer, Marr’s greatest Smiths triumphs were those which weakened the knees with melancholic splendour – Half A Person, Oscillate Wildly, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me and their most celebrated cri de couer There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. As a player, the biggest feathers in Marr’s Smiths cap were those which smacked the gob with their sonic ingenuity – the shuddering How Soon Is Now?, the devil’s jig of Bigmouth Strikes Again and not least the wah-wah hurricane of The Queen Is Dead. Paired with Morrissey’s generation-defining words of love and hate, wit and wisdom, sorrow and greater sorrow still, Marr was to become half of the most influential British songwriting partnership since… (need it even be said, Mr Epstein?). By the time The Smiths disbanded in 1987, they’d made four classic albums, none entering the charts lower than number two: 1984′s The Smiths, 1985′s Meat Is Murder (UK number one), 1986′s The Queen Is Dead (a longstanding perennial of classic album polls, voted the greatest album of the millennium by Melody Maker) and 1987′s Strangeways, Here We Come (Marr’s personal favourite Smiths album). Across these, and the group’s 17 singles, Marr single-handedly revolutionised and renewed the potential for the guitar in popular music. Utilising his own influences from the past – a diverse gallery of heroes ranging from James Williamson (Iggy & The Stooges’ Raw Power) to Pentangle’s Bert Jansch (who he’d later play with on 2000′s Crimson Moon), Bolan, George Harrison and Keith Richards – Marr’s innovations lit the touch paper for a full scale renaissance in British guitar groups which has yet to wane. From The Stone Roses through to Suede, Blur, Radiohead, Oasis, The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys, all roads lead back to The Smiths. All roads lead back to Johnny Marr. But the end of The Smiths was only the end of the beginning for Johnny Marr, now a veteran guitar hero at the age of just 23. It’s a sadly misconstrued myth that after the break up of The Smiths, Marr became a ubiquitous gun-for-hire, rock’n’roll’s eternal “special guest star” on an infinite number of projects. In reality, Marr carried on doing what he did best: playing guitar in a group. Though he’s always lent a helping hand to friends when time permits – co-writing and playing on ‘90s hit singles for Kirsty MacColl (Walking Down Madison) and Billy Bragg (Sexuality) – Marr has spent every year since The Smiths as a fully-fledged member of at least one band. No fair-weather session man, Marr has always prided himself on being part of the essential weaponry to whichever gang initiates him into their midst: The Pretenders (1987-89), The The (1988-93), Electronic (1988-?) Modest Mouse (2005-08) and The Cribs (2008-?). If you didn’t know better, you’d swear Marr had planned his mercurial career purely to give Rock Family Tree scribe Pete Frame a migraine. Combining the architecture of the two greatest Manchester groups to respectively emerge out of the ‘70s (Joy Division/New Order) and ‘80s (The Smiths), Electronic mixed the sequencer with the guitar, the nightclub with the bedroom, Saturday nights with Sunday mornings to define the city’s soundtrack for the ‘90s. Marr’s prestigious collaboration with Bernard Sumner began with a quartet of immaculate pop singles, occasionally aided by Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant: Getting Away With It, Get The Message (still Marr’s favourite out of all the records he’s made), Feel Every Beat and Disappointed. Against a shared back-breaking weight of past baggage, Marr and Sumner found a musical equilibrium which exceeded individual expectations of both. By the group’s second and third albums, Raise The Pressure (1996) and Twisted Tenderness (1999), Electronic began defying the constraints of their name to become, however accidental or ironic, another great Manchester guitar band. Since Marr’s friendship with The The’s Matt Johnson predated The Smiths (Marr would even kip on Johnson’s sofa during early Smiths’ sojourns to London in 1983) it seemed inevitable that the two should finally work together. To promote 1989′s Mind Bomb (including the top 20 hit The Beat(en) Generation), the group embarked on their The The Vs. The World tour resulting, in Marr’s own opinion, in “some of the best shows I’ve ever played”. Equally, he deems their next record, 1993′s critically acclaimed Dusk, one of the best of his career. A lyrically intense exorcism of Johnson’s recent bereavements, Marr sprinkled songs such as Slow Emotion Replay and Love Is Stronger Than Death with his own inimitably poignant Marrdust. Perhaps it was fate that a young Noel Gallagher was carrying a copy of The The’s Dusk the night he bumped into Marr’s brother, Iain, in Manchester’s Hacienda. As somebody who’d been inspired to pick up a guitar by seeing The Smiths, Noel passed on a demo of his group Oasis, then in the process of getting signed. Johnny duly became Noel’s mentor, helping Oasis find management and, famously, “lending” Noel one of his hallowed Smiths guitars which, as is now part of Gallagher folklore, was possessed by the voodoo spirits of great melody assuring his group’s destiny. Years later, Marr would return to shake some action on Oasis’ 2002 number one album Heathen Chemistry. The 21st century began with Marr nurturing his own group, The Healers. With a line-up featuring drummer Zak (son of Ringo) Starkey they recorded the 2003 album Boomslang, a heady mix of Hendrix-esque rock and, on the pensive Down On The Corner, some of Marr’s tenderest strumming since The Smiths. If his guitar wizardry was taken for granted, his complementary singing voice was a revelation. Settling into his new career path as frontman, The Healers promoted the album with a world tour taking in the US Australasia, Japan and Europe In 2005, work on a second Healers album with a new line-up was already underway when Johnny was tentatively approached by Modest Mouse to join the band and help with their next record. He would, furthermore throwing his lot in with enigmatic Mouse leader Isaac Brock to steer the group to the greatest commercial success of their career. Headed by the single Dashboard – which, judged on the Marr-o-meter of Marr-osity probably contains the most quintessentially Marr-ish Marr riff ever – the 2007 album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank rewarded Modest Mouse, and Johnny, with their first US number one album. (Coupled with 1985′s Meat Is Murder, this makes Johnny the only ex-Smith to top the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.) The album has now sold in excess of 1 million copies. Johnny toured the world for 18 months with Modest Mouse. After 25 years as the most versatile guitarist this country has ever produced, Johnny’s influence would finally be acknowledged in the late ’00s with a host of personal honours. In September 2007 Trinity College Dublin nominated Johnny as an Honorary Patron of The University Philosophical society, joining past and present Patrons including, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, Bram Stoker and Al Pacino In October 2007 Johnny won the Q magazine lifetime achievement award. The event was held at London’s Grosvenor Hotel and the award was presented by Ed O’Brien of Radiohead. Among the other winners were, Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys, Shirley Bassey and Damon Albarn. October 2007, Johnny was appointed as a visiting Professor of Music by Salford University and delivered his first lecture on November 4th, 2008 entitled “Always from the outside, Mavericks, Innovators and Building Your own ark.” Johnny also helmed a series of workshops and seminars to students taking the BA Popular Music and Recording degree. 2008, Johnny became a member of a Yorkshire trio he’d long considered to be “the best new band in Britain”, The Cribs. During February 2009 The Cribs toured the UK Christmas and Early January 2008/9 Johnny went to New Zealand and collaborated on Crowded House’s Neil Finn’s 7 Worlds Collide recording and live performance project, which raised money for Oxfam. The all-star band which included KT Tunstall, Wilco and Radiohead’s Phil Selway and Ed O’Brien amongst others, went to New Zealand for three weeks and recorded the album “The Sun Came Out” which included the Jeff Tweedy / Marr-written collaboration “Too Blue” and Johnny’s own composition “Run In The Dust”. “The Sun Came Out” was released September 2009. During late summer / autumn 2008 Johnny supervised the remastering of the original Smiths master tapes, for the critically acclaimed compilation “The Sound Of The Smiths” which was released November 2008. 2009 also saw Johnny play guitar and harmonica on the Pet Shop Boys’ album “Yes”, Girls Aloud’s album “Out of Control” and John Frusciante’s album “The Empyrean”. June 2009 Johnny was awarded the Mojo Classic Songwriter Award, Johnny said he was, “very honoured” to receive the award which was presented by former Suede guitarist and producer Bernard Butler. August 2009 Johnny filmed a cameo appearance for Powder a Kevin Sampson film based on his book of the same name. It’s the story of a band who go from obscurity, to having it all, to blowing it in fantastic style, Liam Boyle and Alfie Allen are the leads and Johnny to plays himself. In the film, there’s a young guy trying to raise money to put the band in the studio, and he reluctantly puts his vintage Ferrari up for sale and asks Johnny if he’s interested. (the car is Steve McQueen’s Ferrari ) September 2009 Ignore the Ignorant, Johnny’s first album with The Cribs, was released in the UK and entered the charts at number 8, making it the bands highest charting album. Towards the end of 2009 Johnny began composing an an original film score for The Big Bang, a neo-noir detective story, starring Antonio Banderas as a Los Angeles-based private detective . Also starring are Delroy Lindo, Sam Elliott, William Fichtner and Snoop Dogg. The film stars Banderas as a private detective who is searching for a burlesque performer who no one has ever seen. Banderas also faces a brutal Russian boxer, three LAPD detectives and an ageing billionaire looking to perfect the nuclear physics equivalent of the Big Bang. 2009 also saw Johnny score and narrate a short art film, celebrating American artist Ed Ruscha’s 1963 piece ‘Noise’, directed by Fiona Skinner, it won the Hayward gallery’s Ed Ruscha Film Challenge. Johnny co-wrote and played on “Ordinary Millionaire” a song on Robyn Hitchcock’s March 2010 album “Propellor Time”. The backing band for this recording included R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, this was the first time that Johnny and Peter Buck had appeared on record together. March and April 2010 Johnny supervised the remastering of all of the original Smiths master tapes. Late April early may 2010 Johnny worked with Hans Zimmer on the electronic heavy score to Christopher Nolan’s new film ‘Inception’. Hans Zimmer said, “It’s a very electronic score. There is orchestra, but the electronics share an equal spotlight, and I also have Johnny Marr playing guitar. Besides Johnny and the orchestra, everything else stays virtual throughout the mix.” May 2010, Johnny was awarded the Inspiration Award at the 55th Ivor Novello Awards held at Grosvenor House London. Johnny, who was presented with the award by Alex Kapranos, told the audience: “I always thought that the greatest thing you can achieve as a musician is to be called an inspiration – aside from a big house in Sunningdale obviously.
