Abigail's Party

Abigail's Party

10 Dec 2025 - 13 Dec 2025

Southwick Players are proud to present one of Mike Leigh's most beloved plays, Abigail's Party. A comedy of manners, and a scathing satire on the aspirations and tastes of the new middle class that emerged in Britain in the 1970s. Suburbia gets to reveal its darker side throughout an increasingly uncomfortable drinks party... Queen of the castle in her suburban semi, Beverley is hosting, alcohol is flowing, music is on cassette deck, and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks are ready to go. Along with her overworked husband Laurence, she welcomes new neighbours Angela and Tony round for drinks. Long-established resident Sue is invited too, but the real party is happening back at her place, as Sue's teenage daughter Abigail cant seem to keep the racket down. Awkward small talk quickly descends into inappropriate flirtation and marital disputes, and worse: a soiree from hell, but it'd be rude to leave. This tragicomic portrait of social class, materialism, and sexual tension in 1977 is an unmissable modern classic.

London, 1888. Terror grips the city. In the back alleys of Whitechapel and the drawing rooms of Fitzrovia, a shadow moves ruthless, remorseless, and barely human. Whispers spread of a sneering Satan haunting the streets, as mutilated bodies appear and the fog thickens with secrets. Meanwhile, the distinguished Dr Henry Jekyll - scientist, philanthropist, and man of vision - pursues a radical theory behind closed doors. Determined to divide the dual nature of man, he risks everything: his reputation, his sanity, and the woman he loves. But beneath the gaslight and gore, something festers... a secret too terrible to name, and too late to stop. This bold new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic masterpiece is brought to life by Robert Tremayne, Artistic Director of Dionysus Theatre. With a striking steampunk design, a haunting original soundscape, and a cast of five in a whirlwind of roles, The Curious Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde is a psychological thriller for the modern stage part mystery, part nightmare, and wholly unforgettable.

One evening they are consulted by the Police about having someone in their house for the weekend as a lookout, to watch the street for a possible courier connection to a Russian spy. As the weekend turns into weeks, slowly but steadily they find themselves drawn into the murky world of deceptions and secrets, forcing them to lie to everyone, including their best friends: their neighbours Helen and Peter Kroger; who may or may not be involved This is the early 1960s and the world is in the grip of the Cold War, yet while suspicions abound, its difficult to imagine it happening under our noses in Britain. More shocking then, is that Hugh Whitemores play is based on a true story... This is a compelling and gripping story about best friends and family forced to keep secrets from each other: a spy story about real people stuck in lies and betrayal.

A Sunday Kind Of Soul - Colin Curtis

25 Jan 2026 - 25 Jan 2026

After a tremendous session at 'At The Top Of The Stairs' recently, we're staging another Sunday Kind of Soul session and this time it marks the 12th Anniversary of Too Darn Soulful's inauguration way back at The Komedia in Brighton. Since then , there have been some wonderful events so we thought we needed something special for this occasion. To this end we have booked the services of COLIN CURTIS. A legendary pioneer of the Northern Soul scene where after establishing himself at The Golden Torch in Tunstall and The Crystal Rooms in Newcastle-under-Lyme he teamed up with Ian Levine to become a groundbreaking force at The Blackpool Meccas where the two of them arguably changed the nature and direction of the Northern Soul scene. For Colin it was the start of a journey that saw him go on to become a major influence on the entire UK dance scene as he traversed, jazz, jazz-funk, soulful house etc. We've decided to use The Barn because of its superb amenities, superb sound system and the simply wonderful dancefloor surface. It's helpful too that there is ample FREE car parking around the venue, buses are plentiful and Southwick railway station is a mere 5 minutes walk away.
