tAngerinecAt at the Black Bull

17 Oct 2025 - 17 Oct 2025

Join us for a most unique night as tAngerinecAt touch down on the Dark Side of the Tyne... Dark anti-lullabies fusing folk, darkwave and deep, haunting, hypnotic soundscapes. Originating in Ukraine and residing in North Wales, tAngerinecAt embodies a rich tapestry of musical influences that intertwine West and East. The duo conveys a strong anti-war, anti-fascist, and anti-ecocide message, where the hauntingly intimate allure of dark jazz a cappella coexist with the fierce energy of hammering industrial electronic beats and poignant spoken word. It reflects the profound mastery of Ukrainian-born Zhenia Purpurovsky, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger, conductor, and actor, in partnership with the visionary sound designer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Chilton who hails from Britain. With a degree in folkloristics, Purpurovsky adeptly juggles rich cultural symbols, creating a tapestry of meaning. tAngerinecAt graced an array of prestigious festivals, including Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Germany, Tallinn Music Week in Estonia, Menuo Joudaragis in Lithuania, Hradby Samoty in Slovakia, Ex Tenebris Lux in France, Focus Wales in the United Kingdom, Equinox in the UK, Eden in the UK, Willowman in the UK, Knockengorroch in the UK, among numerous others.
Stripped Sessions: Westenra & Black Rain
Summer on the Dark Side of the Tyne - while some may be worshipping the sun, we'll we at the altar of the almighty musical pairing of Westenra and Black Rain Since exploding onto the UK goth scene in 2019 ::WESTENRA:: have been building a reputation for captivating live performances of their stylish and atmospheric sound. Their debut album First Light was released in January 2021 to rave reviews, followed by a cover version of the Cliff Richard classic Devil Woman in March 2022 - a taster for the new, bigger sound featured on the four track EP BREATHE which was released in July 2022. Their version of Iron Maiden's Number of The Beast - originally meant as an exclusive live performance to celebrate their headlining the Whitby Krampus Run Ball - was released in February 2023, with proceeds going to the Whitby Krampus Run chosen charities. 18 months after originally being scheduled to be part of the inaugural Dark Side of the Tyne Weekender, they finally touch down at the Black Bull this June Alongside Westenra, Sunderland's own Black Rain who have been going from strength to strength - the mantra of "too punk to be goth, too goth to be punk" gives creedence to the fact that there's no pigeon-holing their sound, it's guitar driven, rich, dark and intense. This is all alongside our usual-unusual mix of post punk, industrial, Goth rock, deathrock, EBM, New Wave, Coldwave, Darkwave, Neue Deutsche Hart, and various other alternative musical goodies. From the vault, hot off the press or anywhere inbetween, of course your requests are very welcome.
Stripped Sessions: Attrition & Novyi Lef
UK Industrial legends Attrition headline Stripped in September Formed in Coventry in 1980 by Martin Bowes and Julia Niblock. The band emerged from the experimental post-punk scene of the early 1980s and, along with other groups such as Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Einstürzende Neubauten, and In the Nursery, greatly contributed to the development of industrial music in the UK. From being part of the DIY and Cassette Culture scene in the 80s through to the release of The Black Mariah, Attririon's diversity has kept them on the cutting edge of dark music since their inception. Support comes from Novyi Lef, (it's pronounced "No-Wee-Leff") Taking their name from a 1920's Soviet arts publication, NOVYI LEF (pronounced No-wee Leff) offer an angry, political take on electroclash, plying their trade in architectural punk via analogue synth screams and squeals. The result is a very striking cold electronic sound, almost similar to some aspects of NDW, and early 80s british synth music from the industrial north with a modern twist.
Stripped Sessions: Golden Age of Nothing & Bone Orchids
The Golden Age of Nothing return to the Black Bull post-hiatus - dark, heavy, melodic, progressive, There are many adjectives that have been used to describe their almost hypnotic spin on the goth rock sound. Support comes from the York psychadelic and deathrock inspired Bone Orchids, who made a massive impression last time they were in the north east Doors at 7pm, Bone Orchids on stage at 8pm, Golden Age of Nothing at 9, Stripped DJs before, between and after
