Kyle Falconer (The View)

Kyle Falconer (The View)

10 Sept 2025 - 5 Oct 2025

Kyle Falconer has always been a songwriter who has been inspired by a female muse. From his chart-topping success with The View through to his acclaimed solo career, his storytelling songs have explored the good times of love and lust; the bad times of regret and heartache; and stories of some of the larger-than-life characters who have stepped into his life, alongside some playful fictional narratives. Recently crowned with the King Tuts Songwriting Award at the Scottish Music Awards, Kyle brings the best of those songs together with The One I Love The Most which will be released on February 7th ahead of Valentines Day. The album is a collection of songs from his vast back catalogue, all of which are named after women and have been newly reworked in acoustic form. Named after a lyric taken from The View fan favourite 5 Rebeccas, The One I Love The Most features songs spanning almost two decades: from the unrequited love of Claudia (from the bands #1 debut album Hats Off To The Buskers) through to the lovelorn Dixie (the original of which featured on last years Top 10 return Exorcism of Youth). Along the way, the album also reinvents highlights from his two solo albums No Thank You and No Love Songs For Laura, which often tackled more complicated themes: Laura shares regrets for his past behaviour and the impact it had on his then-partner and now-wife Laura Wilde, to the issues of gender identity addressed in Kelly. A far lighter moment comes with Madonna, a playful, celeb-heavy imagining of what the ideal afterlife might be like, while Manchester rapper PROSE adds his razor-sharp rhymes to an otherwise stripped-back Lucy.

Cud

Cud

11 Jul 2025 - 8 Nov 2025

Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell, Scritti Politti, and The Mekons, CUD were the pre-Britpop answer to doleful shoegazing bands fun-loving, light-hearted, romantic and downright catchy. Alternatively loved or loathed like a yeast extract, CUD are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight, funky rhythm section of William Potter, bass and Gogs Byrn, drums. CUD were initially lauded for their quirky Peel session cover of You Sexy Thing in 1987. They soon built up a huge live following and buffed up their repertoire with a string of unstraight pop beauties, best exemplified by the 1990 album Leggy Mambo. This led to a major-label deal with A&M in 1991, front-page NME coverage, massive sellout gigs and proper Top 30 hits, Rich and Strange and Purple Love Balloon. Misunderstood by record companies and press, CUD packed away their guitars and sticks in 1995 but, bolstered by a greatest hits anthology (Rich and Strange) in 2006, they agreed to tread the boards again, with a further reunion following in 2012 (now with original guitarist and key songwriter Mike Dunphy) and continue to find an army of Space CUDets still eager to sing along, dance like fruitcakes and invade their stage.

18 Jul 2025 - 18 Jul 2025

The Varukers are a British punk band formed in 1979 by vocalist Anthony Rat Martin. They have been producing highly respected and influential recordings since the early 1980s. The band played what was to become known as the v beat, rather than the drum style of Discharges d beat. But, in common with Discharge, the Varukers lyrics carry a political outlook and ideology. Basically being pissed off with the things they see going on around them, and wanting to say their piece about it!

Opus Kink + support

Opus Kink + support

28 Aug 2025 - 28 Aug 2025

Welcome to the pit of joy! With their ever-mutating brand of jazz-and-country-laced punk, Opus Kink cut a singular figure in a saturated landscape. Making their name with incendiary, cult-like live shows, the band - formed in Brighton (UK) in 2017 - have developed a sound as elusive as it is recognisable, careening from tarantella (St Paul of The Tarantulas) to pounding death-disco (This Train) to music hall (Dust) to menacing, sluggish dirge (Malarkey). Underscored by their signature formidable horn section and ragged, sardonic delivery, the band bear passing resemblance to post-punk and no-wave acts like The Pop Group, Birthday Party and Lounge Lizards, but its the weaving of older, more traditional influences - choral, folk, country, Latin, Weimar cabaret, cruise-ship-crooner - into the fabric of their music that sets them apart. Through their songs concerning violence, evil, shame, troubled sexual politics, anxiety and emptiness, all served with a wry absurdist bent, Opus Kink craft an alluring nether-world for their increasingly voracious audiences to plunge into.

Picky New Promotions Second Anniversary Show featuring BDRMM
Picky New Promotions are proud to welcome Hull quartet BDRMM to headline our Second Anniversary show at the Black Prince in Northampton! The genre-splicing four-piece have just released their third LP, Microtonic, on Mogwai's Rock Action label. I think this is the best thing we've ever done, says singer Ryan Smith. It's a proper step up. It's immediately clear that the Hull band also made up of Joe Vickers, Jordan Smith, and Conor Murray have broken new ground on their latest album, which is, as Ryan correctly points out, the band's most fully realised, complete, and greatest work to date. The last album was essentially like a bridge between the two albums, explains Joe, of 2023's I Dont Know. With that one we knew what we were trying to do but with this one we've fully cracked it. The 10 song Microtonic, recorded with long-term band collaborator Alex Greaves and featuring guest appearances from Sydney Minsky Sargeant of Working Men's Club and Olivesque of Nightbus, is unquestionably a bold leap for the group, who have embraced a fuller spectrum of tones and atmospheres. I felt very constrained writing a certain type of music to fit the genre [we were known for] but something lifted and I felt more free to create what I want, says Ryan. And what I seem to be doing at the moment is a lot of electronic music taking influence from different spans of electronica, from dance music to ambient and more experimental sources. Bdrmm's trademark sound hasnt disappeared by any means, the band's more guitar-heavy beginnings a blueprint and influence on many of the groups breaking through in the here and now, a time when shoegaze is enjoying its strongest revival since its inception in the 80s, but those guitars are now incorporated into a broader, more expansive and varied sonic palette. Microtonic is the sound of a band finding confidence and feeling comfortable but using that position to thrust themselves into the unknown rather than rest on their laurels. It's an ambitious album that is rich in scope and teeming with ideas yet also thoughtfully coherent. It is the sound of the band being themselves in the purest form possible says Ryan: I think we've gone from people saying that we sound like other bands to hopefully people saying: this is what bdrmm sound like. It's a true expression of who we are. Support comes from Northampton's finest up-and-coming shoegaze/grunge band THISTLE. and London shoegazers THE YOUTH PLAY. Tickets £20 plus fees.

UK Decay + Venus Fly Trap

UK Decay + Venus Fly Trap

31 May 2025 - 31 May 2025

UK DECAY live... "post-punk band originally from Luton" History UK Decay was born from another Luton band called the Resiztors, who had formed in 1978.[1] The Resiztors' line-up consisted of guitarist Steve "Abbo" Abbott, drummer Steven David Harle, bassist Martin "Segovia" Smith and vocalists Ricky Smith and Paul Wilson. After the vocalists' departure in the spring of 1979, the remaining band members changed their name to UK Decay, with Abbott as singer (and guitarist). They soon released the Split Single 7-inch EP in partnership with fellow local band Pneumania, on their own Plastic Records label.[1] The EP featured two tracks from each band, with UK Decay contributing "UK Decay" and "Car Crash".[1] Split Single sold extremely well, mainly thanks to a damning review in the NME by Danny Baker and Charles Shaar Murray.[2] At the same time, some UK Decay members produced their own monthly fanzine The Suss[2] and ran their own punk record and clothes shop called Matrix. Guitarist Steve Spon was soon recruited from Pneumania, allowing Abbo to concentrate on frontman duties.[1] The next release for Plastic Records was UK Decay's The Black 45 four-song EP, issued in early 1980.[1] It hovered in the UK Indie Chart for 15 months. Alex Howe from Fresh Records offered to license the first two singles, and signed UK Decay to the label. The first official release for Fresh was the single "For My Country", issued in September 1980.[1] "For My Country" received airplay from John Peel (for whom they would record two sessions) and spent eight months in the indie chart, reaching No. 13. The single was promoted by a major UK tour with hardcore punk band Dead Kennedys. By 1981, two further singles had also been released, "Unexpected Guest" and "Sexual".[1] The former achieved the band's highest indie chart placing of No. 4, and paved the way for UK Decay's debut album, For Madmen Only, released by Fresh in December 1981.[1] The album had taken a year to gestate, due to delays caused by a time-consuming US tour and a frustrating search for a new permanent bass player. When original bassist Smith left, Lorraine "Lol" Turvey from the Statics stood in for some UK dates and an early 1981 European tour. For the US jaunt and subsequent UK tours in spring 1981, Creetin K-OS (of US punks Social Unrest) stood in. Following that stint, K-OS returned home and Eddie "Twiggy" Branch from Northampton joined on bass, just in time to finish the album.[1] During this period, Abbo jokingly referred to the band's sound as "goth" in a Sounds interview, helping to immortalize the beginning of the gothic rock movement, although UK Decay considered themselves a punk band first and foremost. In early 1982, Fresh Records collapsed, and UK Decay were caught up in the ensuing management buyout by what would become Jungle Records. With the help of John Loder and Southern Studios, they managed to buy up the rights to their back catalogue and set up their own label, UK Decay Records. Loder also introduced them to Penny Rimbaud from Crass, which resulted in the Rising from the Dread 12-inch EP (featuring the 10-minute epic "Werewolf") being issued on Crass' Corpus Christi label in August 1982.[1] However, despite a strong showing in the independent charts and an ever-expanding fanbase, the five years of continuous touring took their toll and UK Decay split up in December 1982.[1] Posthumous cassette-only live album A Night for Celebration was released in mid 1983.[1] Abbo, Harle and Branch would regroup with new guitarist Albie de Luca (formerly of Gene Loves Jezebel) as Furyo in mid-1983, releasing two mini-albums through the following year and recording an unreleased album before splitting again in early 1985. Spon went on to form In Excelsis with former members of Ritual; the group released several singles and an album on Jungle Records. He later formed the trio the Big Eye, released two EPS and a CD during 199495 on the Hydrogen Dukebox label. He also released several solo singles and two techno albums (from 1997 through 2011) under the name "Nostramus". Branch played bass in Peter Murphy's band from 1986 to 1992, appearing on several albums. Steve Harle, who like Abbo, later worked in tour management, died in May 1995 in Bangalore, India. Reunion and reformation Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2014 Following a brief 1993 reunion (in which three of their older tracks were rerecorded), UK Decay resumed activity in the early 2000s, launching a website and reissuing A Night for Celebration in 2005 in an expanded deluxe edition titled Nights for Celebration. 2007 saw the release of compilation Death, So Fatal, containing a mix of demos, single tracks, Peel sessions and the 1993 remakes. In 2008, UK Decay reformed for a UK reunion gig and to headline the Drop Dead Festival in Lisbon, Portugal, joined by new drummer Ray "Raymondo" Philpott. Footage from the concert appeared instantly on social media and reignited the band's dormant fanbase as well as the attention of listeners too young to have witnessed the band before. This renewed surge of interest led to further bookings, including a tour of Italy in April 2009, an August 2009 appearance at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool, and other headlining festival appearances across Europe. For Madmen Only was reissued on both CD and digital media in 2009, with the Rising from the Dread EP and several single-only tracks appended. Beginning with their November 2012 headlining appearance at the Drop Dead Festival in Berlin, the band were augmented by second guitarist Jon "Guitar" Rickards (like Philpott, a former member of the Hangman's Beautiful Daughters). The current quartet released the single "Killer"/"Heavy Metal Jews" in February 2013 on the Rainbow City Records label, earning strong reviews.[3] A London concert coinciding with the single affirmed the band's popular resurgence, with journalist Dave Jennings declaring, "Their reunion has proved they are more capable of creating a sound that is current and essential than many of the new young bands that hog the spotlight but actually say very little".[4] UK Decay's second studio album, New Hope for the Dead, was produced by Chris Tsangarides and released on 22 May 2013, followed by the Wonderful Town EP in April 2014.[5][6] Jon Guitar Rickards then departed the band, replaced that summer by Justin Saban, who left in 2020. + VENUS FLY TRAP
