The Black Watch Castle and Museum is a 5 star multi-award winning visitor attraction located in the beautiful city of Perth, Scotland. The venue comprises The Black Watch Museum, Castle Bistro and Gift Shop. We also run an interesting a nd varied calendar of events for all ages. The Black Watch Museum is housed within the historic Balhousie Castle, the origins of which are said to date back to the 12th century. A visit to the ancestral Home of The Black Watch brings the history of Scotland’s oldest Highland Regiment’s to life, through artefacts, paintings, photographs, personal stories and interactive displays. The Castle Bistro provides an informal dining experience with professional, friendly table service. Our seasonal menu offers an appealing selection of meals, snacks, soups, desserts, Sunday lunch and afternoon tea created with quality ingredients of local provenance. The popular Castle Gift Shop showcases a lovely range of quality gifts, regimental memorabilia and branded products with an emphasis on providing an enjoyable shopping experience within a Scottish Castle. This distinguished venue is a unique and compelling location that can also host weddings, offer private dining, exclusive use of the Castle, group and bespoke tours. Step into the world of The Black Watch for an early evening experience that combines a focused gallery talk on The Black Watch’s history with High Tea in the Bistro. Museum entry is included from 5:00pm, and guests will receive their Annual Pass to the Museum on arrival at the event. This pass allows unlimited access to The Black Watch Museum for a full year, giving you the freedom to return and explore the galleries as many times as you wish. Guests who prefer to join the tour directly are advised to arrive by 5:30pm. The evening starts at 5:40pm with a 15-minute gallery talk, offering a short, curated look at key objects and stories in one of the Museum’s galleries. Guests can select their preferred gallery when booking from the following historical periods: French Wars Empire First World War Second World War Each talk offers an introduction to The Black Watch during that period, focusing on a small number of objects and stories rather than a full guided tour. Following the gallery talk, the experience continues in the Bistro, where guests can enjoy High Tea prepared by our Chefs. Seating is arranged individually for each guest or group, allowing you to enjoy the experience comfortably at your own table.View the full menu in advance and select your main course when booking. High Tea & History runs on the first Wednesday of May, June, and July, with limited spaces available in each gallery to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Advance booking is required.

Join us for 300 Years of History Day to celebrating 300 years since the formation of the independent companies. Enjoy a full day of interactive fun for the whole family, including reenactors, a WW2 Jeep and dispatch rider motorcycle, a Redcoat experience, hands-on object handling, informative stands from the Commonwealth War Graves and Black Watch Cadets, soldier-themed crafts, a children’s trail and behind-the-scenes tours. With so much to see and do, this event is perfect for families and visitors looking for a memorable day out plus your ticket includes access to the museum. What’s On: Reenactors: Meet reenactors from key periods in history including a Redcoats soldier, the Ghost of Ticonderoga, a soldier from WW1 and a Second World War dispatch rider who will bring history to life. Military Vehicles: Explore vehicles including a World War Two Jeep and a dispatch rider motorcycle, offering a chance to see how soldiers travelled during wartime. Children’s Activities: Children can take part in a trail through the galleries discovering 300 years of The Black Watch’s history. They can get creative with craft activities where kids can create toilet roll soldiers and work together to create a large soldier collage. There will also be opportunities for kids to dress-up in different uniforms from WW1 and WW2. Redcoat Experience: Take part in an interactive Napoleonic drill session with a Redcoat soldier. Learn basic drill movements using wooden muskets, try cartridge making, and receive a certificate of completion. One session is included with your ticket, with additional sessions available for £2 per person on the day. Research Table: Visit the Black Watch Research Table to explore your own family connections to Black Watch soldiers. Object Handling: Examine selected artefacts from the museum’s archive up close, which will include items not normally out on public display. Information Stands: Learn more about history at information stands from the Commonwealth War Graves and Black Watch Cadets. Act of Remembrance: The day concludes with a short Act of Remembrance at 2:45pm at the memorials, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who served. Behind-the-Scenes Tours: Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum with pre-bookable 15-minute sessions running twice an hour from 11:15 until 2:15. These tours offer a glimpse into the museum’s archive, where you’ll discover how objects are stored, cared for and preserved, and learn more about the stories behind the collection. From hands-on activities and live reenactors to exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, 300 Years of History Day promises a fun and fascinating day out for the whole family.
