And for me, it's like being on the same label as Charley Patton and 'Mississippi' John Hurt. To think that Yazoo believes we are authentic enough to stand with the other people in their catalogue means a lot. The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band has always been strong on authenticity, playing music that blends blues, ragtime, folk, country and other traditional styles with the sleek modern energy of do-it-yourself, homespun, punk fuelled rock. And performing tunes plucked from their lives, their community or from the canonical songbook that fed the Rev. Peyton's formative creative identity. It's a mix that's allowed the band to win fans from all corners of the Americana and rock worlds, and bring a new generation to blues and other forms of American roots music. Some listeners also have a hard time believing all of the Rev.'s extraordinary guitar performances are recorded live with no overdubs until they see the Big Damn Band in concert. Pot Roast & Kisses is a radiant example of his nimble style; weaving two melodies, thumb plucked bass lines and bright decorative filigrees into a graceful, upbeat blend. The rocking electric juggernaut Let's Jump a Train is another. The song's lyrics explore the notion of courageously pursuing adventure a frequent theme in the lives and the songs of the Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band while the Rev. bangs out a machine-gun rhythm with his thumb, ladles in generously sinuous licks and tosses off seemingly effortless fills and accents, then solos and plays the beat simultaneously. When people hear 'So Delicious' and see us play live, I think they understand that what we're singing about is real to us, the Rev. says. We believe in the stories we're telling and in the way we play. And when we're on stage or off, there's nothing fake about us. We are what we do, and I'm proud of that.

Brown Horse make twangy and thoughtful indie rock, delicately arranged, but unafraid of building a yowling wall of guitars, accordion, banjo and pedal steel. Distorted, teary-eyed and country-tinged, this is music for long lonely drives and late, late nights in strange places.

Cardinals start as a joke between two sixteen-year-olds in a sleepy fishing town on the southern coast of Ireland. A whole joke-taken-to-heart later and their difference is marked by an early immersion in Cork’s live music scene, ‘we wanted to juxtapose ourselves,’ says frontman Euan Manning, ‘we have pop-leaning influences and didn’t want to shy away from that.’ Now barely twenty, the six-piece are next in an Irish line changing the sound of alternative music. Blending Ireland’s musical beating heart with a swell of contemporary frisson, the six-piece are tied to making music they enjoy whilst being perpetually kept outside of their comfort zone. The result is an eclectic gothic amalgam of shoegaze, Irish trad folk, and rock which incorporates 60s Wall of Sound elements for a punk-inflected noise that ‘wants to be warm pop.’ Underpinning this trademark friction is a soft narrative arc which chases a stark vulnerability, ‘I’ve heard music and seen films and somehow felt less alone,’ says Euan, ‘if we can do that for someone else, then that’s cool in my books.’ Presented by Where Else? and So Young Magazine This is an all ages event

It's the 25th anniversary of the hit song "Woke Up This Morning", which served as the iconic theme song for the acclaimed TV show The Sopranos, and the track which features on both records.

There’s a difficult to describe, yet timeless quality to certain songs that transcends genre or era. It’s something that you can’t fake or contrive and it’s what lies at the core of Skating Polly’s music. Admittedly the female-driven alternative acts that inspired the band such as Veruca Salt, X, The Breeders, L7 and Babes In Toyland (the later of whom Skating Polly toured with in Europe) aren’t typical reference points for most of today’s up-and-coming bands, but maybe they should be.

Gently Tender is a British indie band featuring Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew and Will Doyle (previously all in Palma Violets, alongside Celia Archer (from The Big Moon) and guitarist Adam Brown.

Getting this star band to South Devon is a real coup for us. This is being put on at the Pavilions, Teignmouth. Tickets are available through their site but we thought we would bring this very important gig to your attention. The Cinelli Brothers have a passion for the music of the 1960’s, an amalgam of blues, rock and soul, and add a twist of contemporary style, making them a rising force on the music scene. Their appeal crosses all manner of boundaries, attracting a significantly younger crowd to their shows as well as pleasing the ears of older fans. Brothers Marco (guitar, keys, vocals) and Alessandro (drums, B/V’s) are joined by Tom Julian-Jones (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Stephen Giry (bass, guitar, B/V’s).

Mansur Brown is a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer based in South London's Brixton district. His musical signature is a hybrid that embodies -- and often seamlessly combines -- funk, ambient, neo-electro, hip-hop, jazz fusion, and rock. He made his recording debut as a member of future fusion outfit Triforce, comprised of his Middlesex University schoolmates. Their Triforce 5ive EP arrived in 2016. Brown also served as guitarist in jazz-funk outfit Yusef Kamaal on their debut Black Focus. After Triforce split in 2018 (following the appearance of their track "Walls" on Brownsville's globally acclaimed We Out Here compilation, an overview of London's 21st century jazz scene, Brown released his long-playing debut Shiroi that year. His studio cast on the date included bassist Thundercat and keyboardist Robert Glasper. Issued as the first album on Black Focus, it was produced by Henry Wu (aka Kamaal Williams). Brown followed with the Tetsuo EP in 2020, and in 2021, released three consecutive singles from May through July -- "Serious/Kerene," "My Prayer," and "Flight" -- before his second album Heiwa appeared in September.

Holy Fawn is most commonly described as a shoegaze band, but this quartet out of Tempe, Arizona doesn’t seem particularly interested in applying labels to their music, which they’ve described simply as “loud heavy pretty noises.” Shoegaze, ambient, post-metal and black-gaze are all accurate ways to describe their dense and layered sound – soft, dreamlike ambience will often explode into ground-shaking walls of sound just to dissipate back into something more musing and softly atmospheric. The quiet stretches lend depth and contrast to its metal-influenced outbursts, which have earned them a reputation as a must-see live act.

Born and raised in Nashville, Alyssa has spent the past decade fine-tuning a sound for her critically acclaimed solo career that leverages her Nashville roots while reaching far beyond. Her sound is every bit as diverse as her own story as evidenced by any number of both esteemed and rising artists who’ve sought her talents in collaboration. A lifelong road warrior who grew up on a tour bus with her country music parents Baillie & The Boys, she recorded a duet with Kenny Rogers at 10 years old and received her college diploma from Sir Paul McCartney at LIPA in Liverpool. Alyssa has performed on many international stages, from legendary venues around the globe (Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry, Royal Albert Hall) to international arena & stadium shows worldwide (Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, C2C, CMA Fest, Highways, Pilgrimage, SXSW, Summerfest, Sundance Film Festival). The quartet of Zack Borzone (vox), Jack Tobias (synth), Sam Pickard (drums), and Saguiv Rosenstock (guitar) display an innate ability to translate a primitive spirit into a modern form. Born during the lockdown as an experimental project between Borzone and Pickard in Philadelphia, the group expanded as the two moved to New York, adding Tobias for their debut self-titled EP, which was produced by Rosenstock, who was then integrated into the band. That first collection is one of self-discovery, of finding the tools necessary to make songs within the band’s own ecosystem. They honed in on their own world and their collaborative, close-knit writing process, discovering the essential structures and feelings that make YHWH Nailgun.

Pop Mutations & Freakender present: C.O.F.F.I.N + special guests Sydney, Australia's hard biting rock & roll band C.O.F.F.I.N (Children Of Finland Fighting In Norway) are returning to the UK this May for The Great Escape (Brighton) and a string of headline/fest dates. After a tremendous run across the globe supporting best mates Amyl and The Sniffers, C.O.F.F.I.N have since returned to the Pet Food Factory recording studio run by Jason Whalley (Frenzal Rhomb) and recorded their most potent album yet. Expect new music, classics and the good-times-all-the-time formidable spirit that C.O.F.F.I.N pour into every single stage.

With a fascination for dissonant chords and jolting rhythms, the music of Blood Wizard provides a space for Cai Burns to express a side to their writing unrestricted by the pressures of genre. Having grown up surrounding themselves with punk and metal, it was not until Burns began collaborating with others that they found themselves falling more and more in love with the world of folk. And this was a love cemented when he stumbled upon the works of Bert Jansch. “I’m not sure how I first stumbled upon Jansch, but I was blown away by him. I was never taught how to play guitar so my technique is pretty sketchy and hearing the liveliness and clunkiness of his playing really spoke to me. I saw him as my bridge into playing folk guitar.” And whilst Jansch acted as an entry point into the world of folk, it was the persona of Blood Wizard that proved to be the biggest gateway for Burns. Under the guise of the mystical cloaks and robes of the wizard, Burns had found a home for his experimentation. Floating between both the subcultures he was raised within and the ones he presently found himself wanting to explore, Blood Wizard sits between the worlds of art, punk and folk. Influenced by the likes of Cate Le Bon and Arthur Russel, Blood Wizard was born out of a fascination with folk-lore and a desire to challenge their creative limits as a writer.

Born out of an impromptu post-pub jam session in Margate, the 5-piece group Pigeon swoops onto the scene with their blistering debut EP Yagana. As the tracks cross effortlessly between Afro-disco, grunge, no wave and jazz, the cohesive symbiotic relationship of the band members is obvious from the start. The powerful vocals of Guinean singer Falle Nioke are complemented by a wealth of talent from Graham Godfrey on drums, Steve Pringle on keys, Tom Dream on guitar and Josh Ludlow on bass. Having moved to the UK from West Africa in 2018, Falle Nioke has recently been in the spotlight with EPs heavily supported by indie radio and BBC 6 Music playlisters. On Yagana, he continues to sing in a multitude of languages, but this time shifts towards a more organic musical direction, showcasing his incredible versatility as a vocalist. This new path can be attributed to the pedigree of the rest of the group – veteran musicians Steve Pringle and Graham Godfrey are key members of Michael Kiwanuka’s band, the latter also performing with Little Simz, Cleo Sol and SAULT, among others. Furthermore, Tom Dream and Josh Ludlow are electronic artists in their own right – with a number of artistic projects in the works, as well as having performed together as ambient duo Soma World. Both used to play in metal and grunge bands in earlier years, an influence which has made its way into Pigeon’s distinctive sound. As a teenager, Nioke would train his voice by the great river Rio Nunez in Boké, among the remnants of the slave trade, pathways and crumbling buildings being swallowed up by the forest. While most Western teenagers grew up with traditional pets, Nioke disclosed to his band members that his closest animal friend in West Africa was the pigeon – and so the name of the group was chosen.

These are the guiding principles of Pigeon, a psychedelic five-piece rooted in the English seaside town of Margate, yet making music that transcends borders. Their debut album, OUTTANATIONAL, is a thrilling collection of party songs without limits: think William Onyeabor in outer-space or early Hot Chip making motorik afrobeat in a 70s New York loft. Building on a string of acclaimed EPs that have been playlisted on 6Music and led to coveted live slots at UK festivals like Glastonbury, Pigeon have evolved out of Afro-disco territory into something moodier. It’s an expansive record laced with heady krautrock, post-punk and punk-funk, indebted to the power of the groove and questing to find the meaning of home. Pigeon must fly.

Little Grandad is a UK-based, Americana-indie four-piece celebrated for their power-pop urgency, four-part harmonies, and brass bursts. Known for a live sound that is equal parts chaos and chemistry, their music seamlessly blends rust-belt Americana, slacker rock, and ramshackle British indie.
