The Crazy World of Arthur Brown at The Brickyard, Carlisle
Arthur Brownis synonymous with his 1968 hit Fire and the Hammond-driven Crazy World line-up which spawned it. However, his God of Hellfire burned out fast and, in 1970, he returned with a new project: the prog-festival freak-show Kingdom Come followed by a varied solo career. Those initial four band albums, by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and by Kingdom Come are thrilling, as tend to be Browns cameos on other peoples projects. Best known for his flamboyant theatrical performances and his powerful, wide- ranging operatic voice. He has been a major influence on a wide range of musicians due to his outstanding vocal ability and wild stage persona and concepts. He is considered a pioneer of shock rock and progressive rock and influential on heavy metal music. He associated with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Klaus Schultze and Alice Cooper and made a cameo appearance in the cult film The Committee and also Tommy. His countless collaborations include The Alan Parsons Project, The Stranglers and The Prodigy. His best-known single Fire hit number 1 in the UK singles chart and Canada, and a number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown had top ten success on both sides of the Atlantic. Following Fire, the press would often refer to Brown as The God of Hellfire, in reference to the opening shouted line of the song. Arthur shows no signs of stopping or slowing down and continues to record and release hugely inspiring music, including his most recent release Long, Long Road (2022) and the launch of his new multi-media show A Human Perspective.

Jaunts into Europe and beyond are also common place. Members of Madness have joined the One Step boys on stage on a number of occasions. Sax player Lee Thompson has played a few times commenting the band were Tight as a ducks arse and Brilliant. Lee is also quoted as saying that OSB were single handily keeping the good ship Madness afloat. Drummer Dan Woody Woodgate joined the band on stage for One Step Beyond and told the boys he thought they were amazing. Thats exactly what we used to be like youve got it to a tee! he said. Fine praise indeed! And he could not believe the keyboard playing used no overdubs and was all being played live! Perhaps the greatest tribute came from Suggs himself. At a Madness gig at the G-MEX in Manchester he walked up to the microphone and said By the way, were MADNESS not One Step Behind!! One Step Behind has also appeared on television a number of times. Singer Ian Soulsby made an appearance on Stars In Their Eyes in the 1990s while the whole band appeared on childrens Saturday morning show SMTV (with Ant & Dec!) in 1998 performing their version of Driving In My Car. They strive to match every detail of the original, both musically and in appearance. Like Madness, One Step Behind is well known for their on-stage antics with which they build up an authentic Nutty atmosphere. Melanie Baker

22 May 2026 - 27 Jun 2026

Melanie Baker is a singer, songwriter and musician hailing from the Lake District and now based in Newcastle-upon-tyne. Her direct and honest lyricism captures themes such as queer identity, self-reflection and the anxieties of modern life. Her self-released music has so far received radio support from BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing and Radio X, as well as supporting the likes of dodie, Tessa Violet, Maisie Peters, Will Varley, Jen Cloher, Jesca Hoop and runnner. Baker's latest EP Burnout Baby is set to be released in April 2024 on Du Blonde's indie record label Daemon TV, followed by her second headline UK tour in April with her newly formed band. She wrote the songs on this EP about the process of struggling with intense burnout: the texts from friends waiting endlessly for a reply, the days lost to endless scrolling, the dying plants that just remind you that you're not succeeding at taking care of anything. Amid real, raw pathos, there's also a sense of lightness to Baker's newly rocky full-band arrangements. These are songs that may never have existed had Baker not found a way to make music that excited her again, and that gives them tangible spark.
