The List

The Edinburgh Playhouse

Built as a "super cinema" in 1929, the category A-listed building has had a turbulent history, changing hands many times before claiming its place as one of the UK's key venues for post-West End tours in the late-1980s. With a capacity of over 3000 on three levels, it is Britain's largest theatre, attracting coach parties from substantial distances away. From the front, it is hard to get a sense of the Edinburgh Playhouse's scale, but inside, you start to appreciate how much architect John Fairweather capitalised on the steeply sloping site to come up with a design that could accommodate so many. Today the building, which has five bars and many period features still intact, programmes a broad range of entertainment, from popular musicals such as Les Miserables and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to comedians such as Dara O'Briain and Ross Noble; and from big name music acts such as Bob Dylan and Kenny Rogers to high-prestige dance productions in the Edinburgh International Festival.

Sam Campbell

6 Sept 2026 - 26 Nov 2026

I definitely don't know what's going on. I'm not even sure I know what's happening anymore. But I cannot wait to come to your town and respect your traditions. I have been on TV over five times. May I divulge a secret? I have purchased a large metal ring. I will use it to keep all of the keys to the city that are given to me by the mayors I impress with my showmanship. Live comedy is straight up amazing because people gather to watch it in a spectacular setting rather than ogling an evil phone screen in some horrid grey dank little corner. Edinburgh Comedy Award winner, Taskmaster champion & surrealist genius Sam Campbell is an Australian comedian who shot to international acclaim after winning the Barry Award for Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2018) and the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show (2022). They love and appreciate the music and they have always strongly supported us. They are so loyal and dedicated. What`s not to love about coming to the UK.” Lawrence Payton Jr. “The Temptations with their choreography is matched by no one. When they first came out, it was so exciting to see that. It was something we'd never seen before. With the Four Tops, there's the vocal prowess. You had that bellowing lead voice of Levi and those beautiful harmonies that they put together. So it's like a perfect contrast. We're not going to out-dance them and they're not going to out-sing us.”
