This summer, we bring a heavyweight session to South London for the Mungo’s HiFi Day & Night Festival. Join us at the legendary Fox & Firkin for a special 11-hour journey through sound system culture. Brockley Max All-dayer: Theon Cross Open Air Show
Our favourite community arts festival Brockley Max will be celebrating their 25th year with a outdoor show in our garden. Local hero and internationally acclaimed artist Theon Cross will be returning to the Fox & Firkin to headline the event. Theon Cross is one of those rare musicians whose vision has redefined their instrument. The creative power and originality of Theon’s playing has reinvented the tuba’s place in modern music. Exploring the tuba’s possibilities in the light of diasporic bass culture, Theon has worked to develop the full sonic spectrum of his instrument, transforming it into a total 21st century sound-system, powered by breath. Theon released his first EP Aspirations in 2015 followed by his first album FYAH in 2019 and the Intra-I in 2021. He was a key member of Sons of Kemet until their dissolution in 2022. He has featured on albums by The Smile, Little Simz, Steamdown, Makaya McCraven, Joy Crookes, and Ill Considered to name a few. Also performing will be the captivating neo-soul singer-songwriter Hillarynx, celebrated for her powerful live performances. Expect a DJ set courtesy of Drezone, a dynamic multi-instrumentalist known for his work with Prince Party UK. Returning to Brockley Max are Arch 57, The Palindrones, Phoenix Outliers, Mr. Strutt and rising talent Jez Kemp to showcase the festival’s signature mix of emerging and established artists. A night of heavy-hitting and in-your-face live jazz music. Jamie Murray (AKA Drumcat) is a London-based drummer, composer, and bandleader working at the forefront of jazz, fusion, and electronic music. Praised by Rhythm Magazineas a “drummer to watch,” he has performed internationally with leading artists including Robben Ford, Dave Binney, Gary Husband, Donny McCaslin, Binker Golding, Emma Rawicz and many others. A regular presence on the UK jazz scene, he hosts the Late Late Show at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and has appeared at major events such as the UK Drum Show and Europe Drum Show. On bass will be the UK legend, Laurence Cottle and on guitar will be the electrifying Dave Preston. Saxophonists Brandon Allen and Alex Garnett 'Celebrating the Tough Tenors', have been friends and musical sparring partners for over 20 years. From the very beginning, their musical chemistry was unmistakable-and it remains as potent today as ever, with each pushing the other to reach new heights. In this project, they celebrate one of jazz’s great traditions: the ‘Two Tenors’ - or, as they like to call it, the ‘Tough Tenors’. Drawing on both classic and contemporary recordings, Allen and Garnett explore the rich history of saxophone partnerships, reimagining the music through their own distinct voices. Well-known collaborations such as Dexter Gordon & Wardell Gray, Johnny Griffin & Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Sonny Stitt & Gene Ammons, and Al Cohn & Zoot Sims form part of the foundation. Back for round 2 after last year's epic daytime party we once again welcome two titans of the Latin American and global underground electronic scene: Chancha Via Circuito and El Búho. For this peak summer tropical rave, in the garden of one of South East London's finest music spots we're delighted to host a special extended set from these two pioneers playing together in the UK for only the second time. Support comes from Argentinian singer & multi instrumentalist Alumine Guerrero - playing live for the first time in London - who re-interprets Latin American folklore enriched with electronic elements and hip-hop. As we’re now firmly into the heart of spring and enjoying the better weather that comes along with it, come on down to the May edition of the Deptford Dub Club where we warmly welcome a new player to the Dub Club family plus a brand-new musical feature. Supa Ron is one of the most entertaining DJs on the reggae circuit. He has a rounded musical education having spent his formative years both in London and east Brooklyn. Super Ron owned Studio 54 sound system, working both as a selector and mic man and has played at many prominent music venues in and around London. David Katz makes a welcome return to the Dub Club. David hosts Dub Me Always, a long-standing London roots reggae and dub night in Brixton and is a DJ, reggae historian and author. Drop da Biscuit will bring his usual mix of roots, rockers and rocksteady from his musical basket to nice up the crowd. As ever, our MC for the evening will be the mighty Doc Murdoc, who will be showcasing his usual unique Singjay-style chants to supplement the evening. The D.D.C. Women in Jazz are taking over the Fox & Firkins iconic garden for the first show in the four-part summer series celebrating the best of London jazz from the artists shaping the scene. Performing on the day will be Marysia Osu, Lily London (DJ Set), with more to be announced. Women in Jazz elevates women performers by hosting events and workshops. Its community is made up of 10,500 people, including singer-songwriters, producers, instrumentalists and composers. Women in Jazz has produced radio shows for Sky TV, Jazz FM and British Airways, run panel discussions atLove Supreme Festival, programmed live events at venues including Ronnie Scotts, and directed and produced a YouTube show, Uncovered, which spotlights the most exciting female talent from across the UK.

Live music, workshop & cultural experience Running from 6:00pm to 10:30pm, the programme is open to the general public and unfolds across multiple moments: From 6:00pm, audiences can explore: \- A pop-up photographic exhibition tracing Sefo’s artistic journey and griot lineage \- A relaxed social environment within one of South London’s long-standing grassroots music & community venues \- A participatory music workshop takes place from 6:30-7:30pm (additional cost, limited spaces). The session focuses on improvisation and fusion, welcoming all levels. Around 10 koras will be available to use, and participants are encouraged to bring their own string or small percussion instruments, or simply take part through voice and rhythm. Following a short break, the evening culminates in a live performance from 8:30-10:30pm by Sefo Kanuteh & Meriya Band featuring Jali Musa Jobarteh, blending traditional Mandinka music with contemporary influences for a vibrant and unique concert. New Regency Orchestra will be headlining the second show in the four-part summer series celebrating the best of London jazz from the artists shaping the scene. Inspired by the musical melting pot of NYC in the 1950s but channeling the punch and power of a whole host of London’s best Latin and jazz musicians, New Regency Orchestra are one of London’s most electrifying acts. An 18-piece Afro-Cuban big band, they blow new life into some of the finest music from that golden era, when jazz luminaries like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were joining forces with Cuban greats like Machito and Chano Pozo. From early 1950s René Hernandez and Tito Puente, through to the 1970s salsa of Rafael Labasta and Orlando Marin, produced and performed with fresh fire, their debut album has been getting plaudits and plays far and wide. Also performing on the day will be Joe Bristow (SEED Ensemble, Balimaya Project, Black Midi, Olivia Dean and more), with more to be announced. Supported by a grassroots music grant from Arts Council England, helping us continue to champion emerging artists and live music in the community. All events support Lewisham Donation Hub, a local charity providing vital support to those facing acute hardship across South East London. The largest pub garden in SE London will have street food, drinks, and a laid-back summer atmosphere. Soulful independent record label Wah Wah 45s return to the Fox & Firkin for the second in their new series of live focussed events celebrating this eclectic and always forward thinking imprint that has been running for over 27 years! On Friday June 5th, Wah Wah 45s present a very special live double-bill! Celebrating the release of their new single, Love & Light, released that very day, Kotoa are a 5 piece band from Loughborough Junction, South East London, made up of drummer Laurie Campling, bassist Frank Black, keyboard player Sam Hillier, guitarist and vocalist Memphis Koloi & saxophonist and vocalist Maia Avery. Singer-songwriter Olly Him and DJ, producer and composer Wyndham Earl both have deeply-dug roots in the south coast of England, with the former making his name as a solo artist before exploring his soulful folk sound with a number of live acts, and the latter collaborating on albums and sharing stages with Bonobo, Khruangbin, Alice Russell and TM Juke, having remixes released by Tru Thoughts and Mr Bongo Records, and releasing his solo projects on his Time Spun imprint. This concert is the synthesis of years of inspiration drawn from Bakuna’s travels across Brazil, where he immersed himself in the country’s rhythmic and harmonic diversity. With a pleasantly unconventional line up including guitar, violin, flute, banjo drum kit and double bass, the band over the years have earned a reputation for their exhilarating and intense live performances, incorporating aspects of street theatre, elements of storytelling and even acrobatics. Sheila is also a visual artist who loves to paint. Her painting plays an important and central role in her solo music project where she aims to explore her musical voice as well as through her paintings provocatively question the of hyper sexualisation of black women throughout history. Disrupting the norms of traditional genre and collaborative music-making processes, The Silhouettes Project is a musical collective in the heart of East Londons thriving cultural scene. Masterminded by Jaden Osei-Bonsu (Eerf Evil) and Asher Korner (Asher Kosher), the collectives Hackney studio and creative hub has become a vital space for artists to connect and create, creating a new blueprint for community, alternative industry structures, and developing top-level talent across the creative arts. Established through Root 73, a non-profit arts organisation that has quickly morphed into a recording studio, record label and an apprenticeship scheme for young people searching for experience in the industry, The Silhouettes Projects testament to community, youth and the empowerment of rising voices remains as steady as the rhythms coursing through the music. Their pioneering, self-sustaining ecosystem has become a notable success story, birthing the beautiful, innovative material that made up their debut album The Silhouettes Project Vol. I. Championing some of the most exciting talents across the UK including ENNY, Bel Cobain, Nix Northwest, Lex Amor and 30 more artists, rappers and producers, the collective earned well over 50M+ streams, critical acclaim across the likes of The Guardian, Highsnobriety and Clash, and went on to perform Glastonbury and other festivals across Europe. Supported by a grassroots music grant from Arts Council England, helping us continue to champion emerging artists and live music in the community. All events support Lewisham Donation Hub, a local charity providing vital support to those facing acute hardship across South East London. The largest pub garden in SE London will have street food, drinks, and a laid-back summer atmosphere. Families are welcome, with free entry for children, market stalls, and activities to keep little ones entertained.

Steam Down is a British Afro-Punk band, weekly event and music community based in London. In a finely tuned alchemy of sound, space and energy, Steam Down have mastered the art of enriching human emotional, social and collective state of being through music. Founded by multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Ahnansé in 2017, the initial event was created to connect London based musicians and producers. Imaginary Millions started off as a live jam in Shoreditch where regulars came to expect two hours of incredible non-stop live improvised music where any member of the audience could get up and sing, rap, speak, dance as they felt moved. Imaginary Millions have also had one of Soho Radio’s most exciting radio shows over the last 5+ years. Expect live jams, eclectic mixes, poetry that speaks to this time and a celebration of creativity in all of its forms. More to be announced.
