The List

The Guildhall

Portsmouth's fine neo-classical Guildhall was completed in 1890, but during WWII it was gutted by bombing and the subsequent restoration saw it lose its original dome and exterior decoration; it's still imposing but now has a curiously chopped-off look. It's one of the biggest event venues in the south-west, hosting art exhibitions, live music, festivals, theatre, magic shows, stand-up comedy, dance and conferences, with the main hall having a standing capacity of 2,500. It's also available as a spectacular wedding venue. Portsmouth & Southsea station is adjacent to the hall, and it's served by the 7 and 19 bus routes.

Hejira is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter and Mingus (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue, such as Amelia, Woodstock, A Case Of You, Song For Sharon, Edith And The Kingpin etc.!

Simon Evans: Have We Met?

Simon Evans: Have We Met?

23 May 2026 - 25 Nov 2026

Completing the Trilogy begun with Genius 2.0 and The Work of the Devil, Have We Met? finds Simon standing, like Ulysses in Tennyson’s famous verse, gazing out over the moaning deep and the twinkling rocks and wondering whether to seek a newer world? To smite the sounding furrows? To strive, to seek, and to find? Or whether in fact, to put the kettle on, crack open the Hobnobs and simply yield? Drawing on Joyce, Proust and the career of Philip Schofield to make sense of his own tangled past and possible future, Evans skilfully weaves comedy, pathos and narrowly averted cancellation into an unforgettable two hours of unique entertainment.

Simon Evans: Simon Evans is Staring at the Sun
BBC Radio 4 stalwart and veteran of a quarter century of highly acclaimed stand-up comedy Simon Evans has announced a huge UK tour of his new stand up show Staring at the Sun with over 50 dates from January - June 2026. Staring at the Sun sees Simon Evans (Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Simon Evans Goes to Market, One Person Found This Helpful) squinting at an uncertain future, revisiting the blue remembered hills of his youth and trying to stay human as the world around him gets smarter. With the AI singularity looming and “reality” feeling increasingly unstable, Evans looks ahead to the coming shockwaves of technology, and back to the analogue pleasures of hitch-hiking, pub bets, and getting properly lost. Turning his famously dry, surgically precise style on the big modern questions: Are we living in a computer simulation? What happens when your body starts issuing software updates you didn’t request? And is staring straight at a solar eclipse, against expert advice, actually an act of courageous self-sacrifice on the road to true enlightenment? Part philosophical exploration, part nostalgic joyride, Staring at the Sun is a hilarious analysis of reality and trust from a man desperately trying to keep his balance while the floor keeps moving. The tone is unmistakably Evans: provocative, literate, and playfully combative, but also soaked in self-awareness. Evans draws on theories propounded by philosophers and mystics since the days of Plato and Ecclesiastes, casting himself as a public intellectual but constantly undercutting his points with brutally funny domestic truths. Simon Evans is one of the UK’s most respected and best loved comedians who has been at the top of his game for over twenty-five years. His TV credits include two appearances on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo, one on Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow, and a season of Channel 4’s Stand Up for the Week. On BBC Radio 4 his series Simon Evans Goes to Market, delighting audiences with his witty and insightful take on the comedically-unpromising territory of economics, has had six seasons. He is also a regular on Radio 4’s The News Quiz, and various other panel games, and from 1998 to 2002 wrote and hosted eight series of the news satire, The Way It Is. He also stars in One Person Found This Helpful – a Radio 4 show he co-devised with Jason Hazely and Pozzitive Productions, that has fun with on-line customer reviews and hosted Headliners – a regular preview of the following day’s newspapers with two other comedians on GB News. Evans is also in demand as a columnist and has written extensively for The Spectator, The Telegraph and Spiked.

Lande Hekt

Lande Hekt

5 Apr 2026 - 23 Apr 2026

Lande Hekt’s natural state of being is in the writing of a song. Having crafted politically aware, heart-on-sleeve, punchy yet tender, punk-flecked songs with her band Muncie Girls, Lande turned her hand to an even more personal songwriting approach as she embarked on writing a solo record - 2021’s ‘Going to Hell’. The debut full-length documented her experience coming out as gay. It set out her stall as a solo artist with supreme storytelling abilities and a knack for understatedly luminous melodies. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such essential artists as The Wedding Present, The Sundays, The Replacements, Sleeper and Sharon Van Etten With her debut album barely a year old, 2022 sees Lande armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life and experiences. Kicking off where the last record left off, the opening track of new album ‘House Without a View’ is ‘Half With You’ which “is about growing into yourself as a queer person, and enjoying who you are after not enjoying it for so long,” says Lande. ‘Cut My Hair’ is about how her relationship with her gender has changed over the last few years, becoming more comfortable in herself and understanding more about what makes her happy. “It’s also about how easy it is to not talk to people when you’re struggling, which is something I did for a long time,” admits Lande.

Sarah Jane Scouten

Sarah Jane Scouten

29 Apr 2026 - 29 Apr 2026

Sarah Jane Scouten is a Canadian folk and Americana songwriter, having been nominated for 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award and an International Folk Music Award. She is a songwriter of rare quality, combining sounds of early country music, ballad singing, folk rock and soul. It's modern indie Americana that knows exactly where it comes from, with confidence and sophistication only bought by time. Her songs pay their respects to 60s and 70s country songwriters Willie Nelson, John Prine, Bobby Gentry and weave in British folk revival elements with a continuous thread leading back to her roots in bluegrass and old time music. After a transformative four years, training as a herbalist in the hills of southwest Scotland, Sarah Jane is releasing her fifth album Turned to Gold (Light Organ Records). Sarah Jane offers a new depth and solidity as a songwriter. With producer Johnny Payne's (The Shilohs) gift for modern vintage arrangement, this is destined to be your next favourite road trip album. An agile voice, ruminative songwriting, and love for classic country, indie pop, and everything in between. - American Songwriter www.sarahjanescouten.com www.cosmicamerican.com

The Jins

The Jins

19 Apr 2026 - 27 Apr 2026

In a big blue house on the eastside of Vancouver, the Jins were born. Now, whether you consider the birth date of a band their first show, or the day they decided on their path, it doesn’t matter, because it all happened in that blue house. 2014’s Hallowe’en show was a tentpole for that early sound, and if you don’t know Vancouver, shows almost never happen in houses there. The city breathes a heavy lung full of NIMBY behaviour, so kicking off their journey by cold-rocking the neighbourhood is the way to become the stuff of legends.
Sean Rowe

Sean Rowe

3 May 2026 - 10 May 2026

Known for his commanding voice and raw emotional presence, NPR’s All Songs Considered praised Rowe’s vocals, saying, “He can just crush granite with that voice. It’s so powerful.” The Wall Street Journal described him as “as timeless as his approach, recalling the ecstatic intensity of late-’60s Van Morrison and the stark subtlety of late-era Johnny Cash.” Rowe has released five full-length albums and multiple EPs, earning a reputation for songs that are both intimate and cinematic. His music has been featured across film and television, including NBC’s The Blacklist and Parenthood. His song “To Leave Something Behind” became a breakout moment when it closed Ben Affleck’s 2016 film The Accountant, going on to surpass 16 million streams on Spotify. The Dead South

The Dead South

31 Aug 2026 - 3 Sept 2026

Saskatchewan is how it sounds: A province in the prairies of Canada. Double the size of Germany, but with less than one million residents. Lots of nature, and lots of silence. Perhaps lots of time to fill the silence with natural sounds, too. This is where the quartet The Dead South comes from, and fits perfectly within this description. The debut album “Good Company” revealed the four hatted, hairy and bearded fellas, with singer Nate Hilts as a focal point. The album is a perfect fit to the genres Folk, Neo-Folk and Bluegrass-Folk or even alternative Country with refreshing tunes to it. With impact, humor and a kind of bold manner of putting words into sound. The instrumentation stays knowingly pure: guitars, cello, banjo, kick drum, mandolin – building the acoustic fundamentals for full lead vocals and harmonies. The first album really was a promise that is now fulfilled with the upcoming UK release of the second album titled “Illusion & Doubt”. No doubt the four piece from the prairies has matured, not only because the banjo is now being played by a lady. Harmony changes as well as excellent and virtuosic instrumental parts have been added to their incredible energetic, passionate and sometimes surprisingly catchy melodies. But Hilts and company are far from being tame: “We are definitely closer to the Pogues than to Alison Krauss. Unfortunately, we do not possess much of the delicate elegance so we try and bring more energy and entertainment to our side. You could say we are a mix of Nu-folk with a few different styles mixed in between. We tend to add elements of classical, punk, rock, alternative, bluegrass, folk and everything in between.”
Sabbra Cadabra

Sabbra Cadabra

4 Apr 2026 - 23 Oct 2026

Now they have a few gigs behind them, the word is that Sabbra Cadabra sound as close to the real thing as any band can. They play early ‘Ozzy Era’ Sabbath and they play it with conviction and determination. Mick Child-Cavill cuts a waif-like figure, channelling all his energy in to any one of his Gibson SG guitars; he even resembles Tony Iommi. The rest of the band don’t even try to look like their counterparts, but they will take you back to that crazy place in time where Rock and Blues gave birth to Metal ,and Black Sabbath left their indelible mark on music. Phil Cavill’s distinctive vocals cut through the riffs like Moses parting the Red Sea. The rhythm section of Pat Scott and Phil Gilbert underpin the Cavill Brothers with precision and perfect timing. Changing from doom laden lines, to crazy fills to jazzy runs, often in one song, shows how getting the ‘feel’ for Sabbath demands more than just reproducing the notes and words. Sabbra Cadabra is the culmination of two brothers’ life-long devotion to one band and years of rehearsing to ensure they reproduce that unique sound in its original format. You won’t be disappointed.

The Spooky Men's Chorale

The Spooky Men's Chorale

28 Jun 2026 - 11 Jul 2026

The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a magnificent, many-headed beast which has single-handedly turned the world of men’s singing upside down. Bypassing well trodden avenues, they carve out new territories of mighty man sounds, exquisite tenderness, and charming stupidity to both celebrate masculinity and mock it. Formed in New South Wales in 2001, the Spooks have become rock-solid festival and theatre favourites in Australia, UK and Europe, with seven albums and 900 gigs under their belts. No subject is too trivial or weighty for their attention, and such ability to find new musical rooms to explore contributes greatly to their astonishing fan loyalty. The show evokes musical worlds far beyond that suggested by their unassuming, casually hatted, black-clad appearance. They are just a bunch of blokes, but where they take you will blow your mind.
Archers

Archers

14 Apr 2026 - 21 Jun 2026

Hailing from Madison, WI, ARCHERS emerged in 2015 after being founded by guitarist Ben Koehler, and vocalist Nathanael Pulley. Since releasing their debut EP, Cuts & Bruises, the band has been anything but dormant. The past 7 years the band has toured nationally, and performed alongside well known bands such as I Prevail, Palisades, and From Ashes To New. The band broke onto the national scene with their metalcore cover of “The Hills” by The Weeknd, which has racked up over two million Spotify streams to date. They kept the momentum going by following up with original tracks “Bleed For This” in 2018 and “Black Lung” in 2019. They followed their newest EP with New Normal in 2020 which showcased a new sound for the band by intertwining their traditional metal-core sound with pop production elements. In 2021, ARCHERS took a leap with the release of “Blanket Fort” that lead to their branding as the “softest bois in metal core” and blended pop punk with both metal-core and pop. “Bitter” was released in 2022 and was the single that really solidified the band’s sound and set the stage for future releases. Over the past two years, the band has independently toured through the US.

Coalesce

Coalesce

15 Apr 2026 - 10 Jun 2026

Coalesce emerged out of the Midwest in the mid-90s with a confrontational and uncompromising sound. Although they were adopted into the hardcore scene, their blend of discordance and noise set them apart from the very beginning. The strength of their back catalog highlights that their widespread influence is entirely justified and that their singular approach to experimentation within heavy music has stood the test of time. Arguably Coalesce were ahead of their time when they began, and they have frequently been out of step with the scenes that swirled around them in the years since. Coalesce convenes whenever it feels right to do so, or as they put it, they come and go as they please. Never ones to sink into nostalgia, Coalesce are looking forwards, now and always.
