The List

The Guildhall

Portsmouth's fine neo-classical Guildhall was completed in 1890, but during WWII it was gutted by bombing and the subsequent restoration saw it lose its original dome and exterior decoration; it's still imposing but now has a curiously chopped-off look. It's one of the biggest event venues in the south-west, hosting art exhibitions, live music, festivals, theatre, magic shows, stand-up comedy, dance and conferences, with the main hall having a standing capacity of 2,500. It's also available as a spectacular wedding venue. Portsmouth & Southsea station is adjacent to the hall, and it's served by the 7 and 19 bus routes.

Neil says of the new record, ‘it’s about meeting your soul mate and living happily ever after… and then what comes after happily ever after. Get ready for the most historically inaccurate hit of the summer’. While not releasing a record since 2010’s Bang Goes The Knighthood, Neil Hannon has certainly kept himself busy. He co-wrote a second album for acclaimed cricket-themed project, The Duckworth Lewis Method, composed a choral work for the Royal Festival Hall’s newly renovated organ entitled ‘To Our Fathers In Distress’, and oversaw the transfer of his musical, Swallows And Amazons, to the West End stage.

The Dead South

The Dead South

31 Aug 2026 - 12 Mar 2027

Saskatchewan is how it sounds: A province in the prairies of Canada. Double the size of Germany, but with less than one million residents. Lots of nature, and lots of silence. Perhaps lots of time to fill the silence with natural sounds, too. This is where the quartet The Dead South comes from, and fits perfectly within this description. The debut album “Good Company” revealed the four hatted, hairy and bearded fellas, with singer Nate Hilts as a focal point. The album is a perfect fit to the genres Folk, Neo-Folk and Bluegrass-Folk or even alternative Country with refreshing tunes to it. With impact, humor and a kind of bold manner of putting words into sound. The instrumentation stays knowingly pure: guitars, cello, banjo, kick drum, mandolin – building the acoustic fundamentals for full lead vocals and harmonies. The first album really was a promise that is now fulfilled with the upcoming UK release of the second album titled “Illusion & Doubt”. No doubt the four piece from the prairies has matured, not only because the banjo is now being played by a lady. Harmony changes as well as excellent and virtuosic instrumental parts have been added to their incredible energetic, passionate and sometimes surprisingly catchy melodies. But Hilts and company are far from being tame: “We are definitely closer to the Pogues than to Alison Krauss. Unfortunately, we do not possess much of the delicate elegance so we try and bring more energy and entertainment to our side. You could say we are a mix of Nu-folk with a few different styles mixed in between. We tend to add elements of classical, punk, rock, alternative, bluegrass, folk and everything in between.”
Sabbra Cadabra

Sabbra Cadabra

5 Jul 2026 - 23 Oct 2026

Now they have a few gigs behind them, the word is that Sabbra Cadabra sound as close to the real thing as any band can. They play early ‘Ozzy Era’ Sabbath and they play it with conviction and determination. Mick Child-Cavill cuts a waif-like figure, channelling all his energy in to any one of his Gibson SG guitars; he even resembles Tony Iommi. The rest of the band don’t even try to look like their counterparts, but they will take you back to that crazy place in time where Rock and Blues gave birth to Metal ,and Black Sabbath left their indelible mark on music. Phil Cavill’s distinctive vocals cut through the riffs like Moses parting the Red Sea. The rhythm section of Pat Scott and Phil Gilbert underpin the Cavill Brothers with precision and perfect timing. Changing from doom laden lines, to crazy fills to jazzy runs, often in one song, shows how getting the ‘feel’ for Sabbath demands more than just reproducing the notes and words. Sabbra Cadabra is the culmination of two brothers’ life-long devotion to one band and years of rehearsing to ensure they reproduce that unique sound in its original format. You won’t be disappointed.

No subject is too trivial or weighty for their attention, and such ability to find new musical rooms to explore contributes greatly to their astonishing fan loyalty. Packed with laughs and songs, backed by a 15-piece band, the show will let the audience in on the banter between some of television's best-loved stars - who are also very close friends. Bradley Walsh says: "People are starved of our type of entertainment - songs, stories, jokes - and banter! It's an homage to the Rat Pack but brought up to the modern day, and its a fantastic night. We are just thrilled. We all share the same dressing room - we're mates. We've known each other for so long now - and the show is about warmth and family - because we are. It's great, really great." Walsh was joined by his three mates and the Barry Robinson Big Band for a one-off show at the Palladium in London in March, and the idea was born for a full-on Prat Pack tour. Fans can expect an evening packed with jokes that can only come from the chemistry of such seasoned entertainers. Walsh, Conley and Richie were all Pontins Bluecoats earlier in their careers and Pasquale was a Warner's Greencoat, giving them all a grounding in variety before decades-long careers at the very top of entertainment.

BSO: Eastern Odyssey

BSO: Eastern Odyssey

28 Oct 2026 - 29 Oct 2026

The overture to Mozart’s Don Giovanni effortlessly introduces the shifting moods and dramatic contrasts and tensions that are to follow. Its genius lies in the success with which it captures the spirit of the opera without quoting from all its famous numbers. Saint-Saëns’ exquisite Second Piano Concerto shows a youthful high-spiritedness and somewhat inorganic, juxtaposed themes and movements. A famous witticism claimed, “It begins with Bach and ends with Offenbach”. The skill of Saint-Saëns the pianist shines throughout, with its virtuosic passages and arpeggios, ultimately sparking to the finale’s tempestuous pyrotechnics. Scheherazade consisted of “separate, unconnected episodes and pictures” as Rimsky-Korsakov himself put it, from The Arabian Nights. It is a triumph of imagination over experience; a feast of sumptuous colours and brilliant instrumental effect by the man who literally wrote the book on orchestration. The suite is bound together by a recurring motif, a bewitching melody sung by the solo violin: the voice of Scheherazade herself. It quickly became a favourite Romantic showpiece and a landmark in the history of descriptive music.
BSO: Imperial Majesty

BSO: Imperial Majesty

18 Nov 2026 - 19 Nov 2026

Combining Tudor-style choral grandeur with modern, rhythmic energy, Walton’s vibrant and majestic coronation march is celebrated for its stately main theme, a lyrical trio, and a triumphant finale. Beethoven’s final piano concerto is the largest in scale of all of his concertos – an epic tour de force, pitching soloist and orchestra in a musical argument of unprecedented breadth and scale. It is written in a virtuosic style that looks forward to the grand pianism of Liszt in its full chordal textures and wide dynamic range. A spirit of heroism infuses the music, whilst the sublime slow movement is one of Beethoven’s most profound. However it might have acquired its name, it really is the ‘Emperor’ of piano concertos. Tchaikovsky’s Suite No.3 is a finely crafted work of winning spirit, though one that rarely broaches the personal revelations of his late symphonies. It is entirely idiomatic Tchaikovsky, nonetheless. Nobody else could have written the opening Elegy, which traces a trajectory from the languid to the impassioned, with its gorgeous themes and fluttering accompaniments.
BSO: Soulful Epitaph

BSO: Soulful Epitaph

24 Feb 2027 - 25 Feb 2027

Butterworth composed his poignant Rhapsody as an orchestral epilogue to his song settings of the various Housman poems which explore life faced by the spectre of impending mortality. Influenced by Sibelius, Debussy and Vaughan Williams, it is a ravishing epitaph that sings of the tranquil landscape from which it grew. Bridge’s Oration for cello and orchestra, an expressionist concerto in one movement, alternates ghostly funeral marches with outbursts of terror and indignation. It is both an elegy for the fallen of the First World War and an anguished warning. The cello writing is exceptional – at times a declaiming speaker, at others muttering a train of thought arising from deep within the unconscious. Tchaikovsky approached his Fifth Symphony from a position of extreme self-doubt, fearing his muse was exhausted. “I am dreadfully anxious to prove not only to others, but also to myself, that I am not yet played out as a composer”. From its first note to last noble chord, it is filled with passionate self-questioning, exposing the soul of a deep and complex man.

BSO: Symphonic Horizons

BSO: Symphonic Horizons

17 Sept 2026 - 22 Sept 2026

Mendelssohn’s musical postcard is more of a tone poem than an overture in the traditional sense. It conjures up a whole seascape including the grandeur of Fingal’s Cave, the swelling of the sea, the light on the water and the fury of the waves breaking on the monumental cliffs. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is an exuberant and passionate work filled with uninhibited virtuosity. The dramatic and lengthy first movement is based on the menacing-sounding Ukrainian folk tune titled Song of the Blind and is filled with extensive technical passages made up of lush chord sequences and scales. The finale is also based on a folk tune – a combination of hymn-like solemnity and more technical wizardry. The Second Symphony might be described as Brahms’ ‘Pastoral’, a total contrast to his dramatic and very serious First. Its song-like melodies are imbued with a gentle quality – in their simple beauty the themes give the impression of having been written down as a result of spontaneous inspiration. In Brahms’ own words, “a delightfully happy spirit” pervades the whole work.

Soft Machine

Soft Machine

3 Jul 2026 - 21 Feb 2027

Their work, from their earliest performances as a psychedelic band who were contemporaries of, and shared stages with, Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, all the way to being one of Europe’s best known ‘fusion’ groups, has influenced several generations of bands, and continues to be name-checked by today’s hip experimentalists. Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 1960’s, the band’s spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeon holed and can move from powerful progressive jazz fusion to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz-rock to ambient loop music continues to make it both unique and totally contemporary.

Since emerging on the UK folk scene with her 2022 debut album Dwelling by the Weir, Ellie Gowers has captivated audiences with songs rooted in folklore, ecology and the nuanced stories of her hometown, Warwick. Lauded by The Guardian as 'full of delicacy, precision and gentle delight,' the album established her as a compelling new presence on the UK touring circuit. Ellie joins us this autumn as part of her UK tour, celebrating the release of an extended edition of her celebrated 2024 EP - You The Passenger. This expanded release builds on the critical success of the original EP, which earned national airplay on BBC Radio 2 (Mark Radcliffe), BBC 6 Music (Lauren Laverne's Fantastic Beats), and RADMAC, alongside the KLOF premiere of her video A Moment and multiple major playlist features. Inspired by the likes of MIPSO and Jeff Buckley, Ellie’s new material sees her pushing into more emotionally spacious and contemporary territory - while retaining the grounded storytelling that first brought her acclaim with 2022’s Dwelling by the Weir. These songs explore the aftermath of life on the road: themes of absence, longing, and emotional duality woven through rich acoustic textures and lyrical craft.
