Tom Kitching ' 'Where There's Brass'
Author and musician Tom Kitching is touring his book and album, Where There's Brass, with a special storytelling and music concert tour. Documenting six months living in the London waterways community, making the long journey across England from Manchester on a traditional narrowboat built in 1937, Where There's Brass tells the story of the contemporary London waterways; a floating slum at worst, a bohemian, alternative, vibrant community at best. It is a love letter to the waterways, and a rallying cry for what they can be in the future. Stories old and new interwoven with a specially composed suite of music, underpinned by Tom's long term accompanist, the brilliant Nordic mandola player Marit Fält. This tour builds on the success of his previous work, most recently Seasons of Change, the stories and music from 18 months busking around England. Im devouring the book, not just reading it. The lad is one of the best fiddlers Ive ever heard he breathes life into the tunes. I didnt know he was also a very fine writer indeed. Ive been a sucker for these books about these islands. Busking for his keep, with his feet on the pavement of the high streets and his hand sending music into the air, Tom is a wise and witty guide to England pre-Covid19. Mike Harding, on Seasons of Change. Tom's debut solo album Interloper was listed at #6 in the Sunday Express albums of the year 2015. There are dozens of folk violinists, but few with the attack, passion, and ingenuity of Tom Kitching. The most beautiful instrumental playing of the year.

Sam Browse and Catch the Sparrow

Sam Browse and Catch the Sparrow

5 Aug 2025 - 5 Aug 2025

Sam Browse is a London (formerly Sheffield) based singer/song-writer and multi-instrumentalist. He sings folk and protest songs counting Roy Bailey and Tony Benn amongst his greatest influence. Drawing on a folk canon of rakish werewolves, gender-fluid drummers, and inappropriately amorous kings - alongside sounds sampled from Soho to the RVT - his latest EP, Wanton Will, is a love letter to queer London. A - sort of? - newcomer to the capital’s folk music scene, we hope you enjoy him as much as we do. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Catch The Sparrow (singer-songwriter Suze Terwisscha van Scheltinga) initially studied to be a jazz vocalist before her love for folk music brought her to the North East of England. She quickly became a fixture on the Newcastle folk scene, performing extensively throughout the region before relocating to London in 2024. A natural storyteller with a keen ear for captivating melodies, her songs effortlessly cross boundaries of style and genre to create a sound that is uniquely her own. As she taps into folk ballads and Fairytales, she introduces a colourful cast of scorned wives, sheltered princesses, free-spirited poets, and crossdressing adventurers, shedding a new light on timeless tales. “...elaborate, fairy-like ballads on a bed of piano sounds ... with the violin seeking its own mercurial way throughout.” - New Folk Sounds

Songwriter, guitarist, and the compelling frontwoman of alt folk rock band Bruise, Isobel Jane Kimberley has long been a distinctive voice on the UK music scene. With nine appearances at Glastonbury Festival, five critically acclaimed albums, and a dedicated underground following, she has built a reputation for fiercely original songwriting and emotionally resonant performance. In recent years, Isobel made a seamless transition into the world of traditional folk, forming the award-winning duo The Kimberleys, further cementing her status as a boundary-pushing artist with deep roots in British musical heritage. Now, she steps out under her own name for the very first time. Her debut solo release, the Broken Bowl EP, is a deeply personal and beautifully crafted collection, written and produced by Isobel Jane Kimberley
Greek Folk Music - Urban and Rural Folk from the Near East
This project brings together folk music from many corners of Greece and the near surrounding areas of the Mediterranean basin. Music that mirrors the natural elements in its environment - from the echoes of the mountains, the singing of the birds, the sound of the waves, and the rhythms of rural and metropolitan life. Balkan and mediterranean sound is a collective expression of happiness and despair, songs written for the recollection of epic stories, mundane moments, life, love and death. Rhythms that correspond to dances - communal circle dances of the villages, or the more urban and coy tsifteteli and karsilamas dances. Much of it is authorless and enjoyed either in solitude or in intimate and grand festivities. With oud, violin, guitar and voice...let the music take you on a journey from the mountains of the Balkan north to mainland Greece, through the islands of the Aegean and across to Asia Minor! Musicians: Glykeria Kissa, Vocals Ismini Mouzakiti, Violin Nikolaos Palamidas, Oud Vasileios Voulgaropoulos, Guitar
