Hejira: Celebrating Joni Mitchell

7 Dec 2025 - 8 Apr 2026

Hejira is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter and Mingus (regarded as her ‘jazz period’), Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded, producing the outstanding live album, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has - in her own way - assimilated the poise, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue, such as Amelia, Woodstock, A Case Of You, Song For Sharon, Edith And The Kingpin etc.!

The Herbaliser Band

The Herbaliser Band

23 Oct 2025 - 20 Nov 2025

The Herbaliser Band Live in London for ONE night ONLY! Formed in London during the early 1990s, the band's core members Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba were inspired by soul, funk and in particular the then current hip hop emerging from America. Unfortunately, at that time, they didn't know any rappers. They made up for this missing element by adopting an extra ingredient to fill the absence; a widescreen cinematic feel born of vivid imagination. The spy thrillers, westerns and detective shows of the duo's 1970s youth would be plundered for inspiration and translated to vinyl by what would soon become their trademark, an explosive and extensive live band. But this template was set long before the convening of that large ensemble.

Obie Trice

Obie Trice

14 Oct 2025 - 19 Oct 2025

Obie Trice went from no one to someone in the rap world quickly when Eminem signed him to Shady Records and executive produced his debut. Born on the west side of Detroit in the Schoolcraft and Greenfield area, Trice began his rap career humbly. He dropped out of Cooley High School in the early 90s and began making ends meet, which wasn't too easy in the cold, abandoned streets of Detroit. His turning point came in 1998 with the birth of his daughter, Kobie. Shortly afterward, he took note of Eminem's breakthrough success in 1999 and began to have faith that he too could make it in the rap game, despite living in wayward Detroit. Trice had begun rapping at a young age. His mother had bought him a karaoke machine that he used to practice, making tapes of himself over the beats of Run-D.M.C. and Big Daddy Kane. Over the years he improved his craft remarkably, releasing street tapes that began to generate some buzz in the local underground scene. These recordings came to the attention of Eminem, who in turn called up Trice for an audition, and it was all smiles and handshakes from that point on. First came a plug on D12's Devil's Night album (Obie Trice [Intro] [2001]), then features on the Eminem Show album (Drips [2002]) and the 8 Mile soundtrack (Love Me, Adrenaline Rush, and Rap Name [2002]), and finally Trice's album debut, Cheers, in 2003. The album went platinum, and Trice wrapped up recording his follow-up by the end of 2005. On New Year's Eve 2006, he was driving home from a Detroit club with his girlfriend when he was shot in the head. Remarkably, he was able to exit the freeway, and an ambulance took him to a hospital in Southfield. It was determined that removing the bullet would be too risky; Trice was released within hours of arriving at the hospital. Between that event and the shooting death of D12's Proof, a friend and one of the people who met him at the hospital, Trice was compelled to record new tracks for his long-finished album. Second Round's on Me was finally issued in August 2006. Two years later he left Shady, feeling the label had failed to give him the proper promotional push but making it clear that Eminem was not to blame and the two were still very close. Mixtapes and guest appearances would carry Trice until 2012 when Bottoms Up became his first release for his own Black Market Entertainment label. Dr. Dre produced the album's title track while Eminem made two guest appearances, lending his vocals to Richard and producing the song Going Nowhere. Jason Birchmeier

Michelle Gurevich

Michelle Gurevich

28 Oct 2025 - 28 Oct 2025

Eat Your Own Ears presents Michelle Gurevich at Jazz Cafe. Michelle's 7th bedroom produced album - It Was the Moment - will not disappoint those anticipating a new soundtrack for their darkness and saudade. It may even be her most vulnerable and expressive work yet, not unsurprising as it was written and produced during a period of grief and mental instability. There's a new level of emotional surrender in these songs, confirming her place in the lineage of dramatic chansonniers. Themes include a fatalistic submission to passion, the ephemeral nature of encounters, the loss of mother and home, the end of days, and losing one's mind in both the best and worst ways possible. Michelle offers her entire palette of sound here, from dark Lynchian realism, to elegant humor, to queen of epic melodrama. With shows regularly selling out in cities like Istanbul, Berlin, Warsaw and Athens, Michelle has established a niche that includes the East-European diaspora, the Berlin queer scene, and those with a taste for the melodramatic balladry of Charles Aznavour, Zeki Müren and Nikolai Slichenko. While her concerts include more live aspects and a line-up of musicians, she continues to self-produce and release her own albums, maintaining an intimacy and singleness of expression from her bedroom to yours. A genre based partly on elements of melody and style, but moreso, a signature fatalist-celebratory approach to songwriting. Age Restriction 18+

The Space Lady

The Space Lady

18 Nov 2025 - 18 Nov 2025

Upset The Rhythm presents THE SPACE LADY ROBERT SOTELO Friday 1 July OSLO, 1a Amhurst Road, Hackney Central, E8 1LL 7pm-10pm | £12.50 THE SPACE LADY began her odyssey on the streets of San Francisco in the late 70s, playing versions of contemporary pop music an accordion and dressed flamboyantly, transmitting messages of peace and harmony. Following the theft of her accordion, The Space Lady invested in a then-new Casio keyboard, birthing an otherworldly new dimension to popular song that has captured the imaginations of the underground and its lead exponents ever since, with the likes of John Maus, Erol Alkan and Kutmah being devotees. Of her early street sets, only one recording was made, self-released originally on cassette and then transferred to a homemade CD. 'The Space Lady's Greatest Hits' released in 2014 through Night School features the best of these recordings - mostly covers but with some originals - pressed on vinyl for the first time and features archival photographs and liner notes from The Space Lady herself. 'Greatest Hits' contains The Space Lady's personal favourites; her haunting take on The Electric Prunes' 'I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night),' a frantic 'Ballroom Blitz' amidst other reconstructed pop music. Following on from this wonderful record, The Space Lady released a split LP in 2015 with the Burnt Ones on Castle Face records which included her spectral take of 'Across The Universe' and a recent LP from 2018 through Mississippi entitled 'On The Street Of Dreams'. https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/exploring-the-intergalactic-wonders-of-the-space-lady ROBERT SOTELO is a mercurial melodist building a resplendent world of pristine DIY pop from the ground up. The Glasgow-based artist's songs are meticulously crafted, patchworked together with eclectic arrangements and ardent vocal performances. Last year Upset The Rhythm released Robert Sotelo's vivid new album Celebrant. Celebrant was intended to be and still is to some extent a joyous wedding album (Sotelo is recently married), but in his own words the pandemic and the death of my aunt Carmen intersected with the original concept so the album is darker than intended in places. More cinematic and measured than prior albums, Sotelo expounds that it is purposefully a bigger sounding attempt at my keyboard songs and I felt more ambitious about it in general. That's certainly reflected in these twelve sophisticated loops of song, all curiously affecting and catchy, sprinkled with Sotelo's offbeat musings and keenly accurate observations. Guitars are rarely employed on this record with Sotelo recruiting Iain Mccall, Ross Blake, Celia Morgan and David Maxwell to contribute brass, woodwind, spoken word and acoustic drums respectively. All of these additions blend well with the album's synthetic core, softening and subtly shaping its pop-first nature into something more nuanced, vulnerable and human. https://robertsotelo.bandcamp.com/album/celebrant

Nahko and Medicine for the People

Nahko and Medicine for the People

24 Feb 2026 - 28 Feb 2026

Born to a Puerto Rican/Native American mother and a Filipino father, Nahko was adopted and raised in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. Beginning his musical journey at 6 years old, Nahko began traveling widely in his teens, wrestling with identity, purpose, and perception. Busking on streets, selling CDs out of his guitar case, he earned a cult following. Backed by his band, Medicine For The People, Nahko’s 2013 commercial breakout album 'Dark As Night' landed in the Billboard Heatseekers Chart top 10. Medicine For The People played major festivals including Outside Lands, Electric Forest, Wanderlust, and Bumbershoot, and sold-out Colorado’s 10,000-capacity Red Rocks Amphitheatre as headliners. In 2020, Nahko walked away from the corporate music industry, vanishing into rural Oregon to work intensely on himself and his relationship with the world. He returns with a record rich in the core qualities that have defined his career and delighted fans for over a decade – socially-conscious, super-positive folk and rock flecked with soulful alt-R&B, reggae, and gospel – now embroidered with a nuanced defiance of “cancel culture”, wide-eyed re-appreciation of himself, and a trademark stylistic eclecticism expanded into hip-hop, pop, trap, and more. On seventh album, 'Trenches', Nahko Bear channels three years of soul-searching personal revolution into sound. The record reflects more than a thousand days of open-hearted self-excavation, avid learning/unlearning, and radical internal re-calibration.

The Bays

The Bays

9 Jan 2026 - 9 Jan 2026

Forget every rule you've ever been taught about live music. Ignore every outmoded notion of what it is to be a 'live' band. The Bays only perform live, they don't have a set-list and they couldn't ever play the same performance twice. It's all about the moment - an experience or an event that exists between the band and the audience for one time only. What drives this band is a need to communicate with their audience in a way not possible with the format of traditional live bands. There are no 'songs' as such to perform, there's no album to promote, there are no commercial imperatives at play. A huge name in electronic drumming and live drum and bass, Andy Gangadeen has spent the last decade on the road with Chase and Status. Alongside this commitment, he became musical director for several hugely successful touring acts including Labrinth, Rudimental, Clean Bandit, Anne Marie and Wilkinson. Here Andy met the two new Bays Oli and Kaz. First new edition, Oli Wiseman has worked extensively with Anne-Marie and Drum and Bass giant, Wilkinson. Oli has honed his skills with electronic drumming and was an obvious choice for the new line-up. Up next we have Kaz Rodriguez, an international drummer, composer and hybrid musician using his techniques of summoning live breakbeats on the drums and manipulating time. Kaz has been nominated on numerous compositions for best drum album compilations, also featuring on the front cover of Rhythm in 2016 and 2020. Having had a strong influence from The Bays as he grew up learning so much from Andy Gangadeen, he now begins his journey as a member of The Bays family. This is an 18+ event.
