Rachmaninov’s Third has been called the “Everest of piano concertos” but if anyone’s equipped to scale it, it’s the superb young British virtuoso Isata Kanneh-Mason and the BBC SSO’s newly-appointed Principal Guest Conductor Delyana Lazarova. She’s placed it at the centre of a concert designed to showcase her own musical passions, whether Jessie Montgomery’s playful letter from America, Samuel Barber at his most explosive, or Claude Debussy’s impressionist seascape – music driven by the swell of waves and the sparkle of sunlight. It is winter...” Music speaks to us most directly when it engages with its times - and 90 years ago, few young composers understood that better than Michael Tippett. Composed during the Second World War but provoked by decades of intolerance, A Child of Our Time feels as urgent now as it did then, and with Ryan Wigglesworth conducting the National Youth Choir of Scotland, it’ll make an unforgettable climax to the BBC SSO’s 90th Anniversary Concert. Today, he conducts a programme with a French flavour, and with Volkov’s insights the bittersweet beauty of Ravel’s waltzes – like the luminous colours of Debussy’s ravishing Nocturnes – will sound fresher than ever. But we open with a different (and eye-opening) angle on French music: a delightful, rarely-heard symphony from the decade that the BBC SSO was founded. And pianist Nicolas Hodges dives deep into the visionary sonic world of Maurice Ohana, the Casablanca-born composer with a voice that was entirely his own. The opening of any piece of music draws you into a new emotional world, and however familiar the melodies that follow, a great live performance makes you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time. And taking his cue from those thunderous words, the young Rachmaninov hurled himself into a First Symphony on a formidable scale. Dark, turbulent and burning with unrequited passion, this is music as gothic melodrama - lost (but later recovered) when its composer fled the Russian Revolution for a life of exile. It’s a gripping climax to this concert from guest conductor Chloé Van Soeterstède: an afternoon that begins in the dream-world of Debussy’s mythical Faun, and ends at the gates of the inferno. But there’s time to sing, and to dance too - and when you hear BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artist Hana Chang play Prokofiev’s zingy Second Violin Concerto, you’ll believe that a violin can do both. _Seating for Afternoon Performances is unreserved_

It’s music that speaks from the heart, and under Principal Guest Conductor Delyana Lazarova’s baton, every note tells a story. In communist Poland, Witold Lutosławski takes a handful of folksongs and crafts them into a mini-masterpiece of wild rhythms and subversive beauty. General subscription booking opens from Tuesday 22 April Tickets on general sale Thursday 15th May 2025 Bruckner Ave Maria Ryan Wigglesworth Magnificat (revised version, world premiere) Bruckner Symphony No.4 ‘Romantic’ BBC Singers Sophie Bevan soprano Ryan Wigglesworth conductor The air shimmers, and a horn calls softly in the distance. Is there a more magical beginning to any symphony than the vista that opens Bruckner’s Fourth? No wonder he called it “Romantic”. Bruckner imagined a story of knights, forests and castles, but he preferred to let the music speak for itself, and in this closing concert to the BBC SSO’s 2025/26 season Ryan Wigglesworth will let it do exactly that. It’s a world away from the spiritual intimacy of Bruckner’s sacred music – sung tonight by the BBC Singers – and the bridge is a new version of Wigglesworth’s own powerful Magnificat, sung by its dedicatee Sophie Bevan. Bachtrack admired its “Heaven-meets-earth choral harmonies” – but hear for yourself today. Colin Hay

Colin Hay

22 Nov 2025 - 23 Nov 2025

Blessed with an easy charm and a gift for melody, Colin Hay parlayed his success as the chief singer/songwriter for the Australian new wave titans Men at Work into a long career as a troubadour and occasional actor. Hay stumbled slightly at the outset of his solo career, with his 1987 debut Looking for Jack failing to maintain the mass audience he earned with the blockbuster success of Men at Work. By the end of the 1990s, Hay sowed the seeds for what became an enduring career. He turned away from major labels and founded his own indie Lazy Eye; he backed away from arena rock and began singing sweet folk-pop, he embraced his adopted hometown of Los Angeles and found a creative foil in Cecilia Noel, a Peruvian singer he'd later marry. Hay also happily returned to such Men at Work hits as "Who Can It Be Now," "Down Under," and "Overkill," finding a receptive patron in Zach Braff, who featured Hay's music in his 2004 film Garden State and his sitcom Scrubs, giving the singer a boost in popularity in the early 2000s.

Cam

Cam

17 Feb 2026 - 25 Feb 2026

Cam. The simple, three-letter name is bold. And that rings true to the art, and the heart, of one of country’s shining new acts. That boldness is evident in nearly every step she takes. Cam makes it a habit to wear eye-catching yellow every time she goes out in public. The strings and acoustic guitar in her breakout #1 Platinum-certified smash, the Grammy and ACM Awards nominated Burning House, are stirringly fragile, a brave counterpoint to the party atmosphere of modern country. And she sings with a dynamic clarity that’s both distinctive and friendly. Cam backs up that boldness with a firm delivery, embedding her material with a ringing conviction throughout the 11 songs on her Arista Nashville/RCA Records full-length debut, Untamed. Released December 11, 2015, her new album burst onto Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart at #2 and earned 2015’s best first-week album sales by a debut country artist. Whether she’s singing about fresh love, broken hearts or difficult personal crossroads, she’s clearly living the experience for the three or four minutes she’s in it. Actually, she’s re-living the experience, because the emotions in every one of her songs come unapologetically from her singular interaction with the world. “There’s a lot of work involved in being an artist, and I’m so happy to do it,” she says. “But if I’m going to invest my time in the work part of it, the music just has to be me.” Adventure and uniqueness were practically built in to Cam from the outset. Camaron Marvel Ochs was born in the waterfront Southern California town of Huntington Beach, she spent big chunks of her youth at her grandparents’ horse ranch in Oceanside, where the tractor was red and the barn was blue. Her grandfather was both a cowboy and an entrepreneur – he started his own business, building wooden office desks – and her parents were similarly non-conformist. Her father grew up in a military family and had the guts to move out on his own at age 17, a time when most kids are looking to Dad for a few extra bucks to put gas in the car and see a movie. Her mother had an executive position in construction management at a time when those jobs were reserved almost exclusively for men. In turn, their independent, self-reliant streak was instilled in Cam, particularly after the family relocated to northern California. While living in Los Angeles, Cam met a kindred spirit in up-and-coming songwriter/producer Tyler Johnson (Taylor Swift, P!nk). A songwriting partnership was begun, with promising early results – they co-wrote a song on Miley Cyrus’ album Bangerz, and Cam also landed a song on a project by indie country act Maggie Rose. Cam and Johnson meticulously wrote and rewrote the material for weeks and months at a time under the watchful eye of GRAMMY®-winning producer and songwriter Jeff Bhasker (Fun., Mark Ronson), who helped bring her to the industry’s attention in New York, even while she made organic inroads in Music City. In a bit of a fluke, Cam’s music was discovered online by Nashville radio programmer Michael Bryan, who started playing one of her songs, Down This Road, on WSIX even though she was unsigned. While the attention was a boon, wheels were already in motion behind the scenes with label meetings in Nashville when Bhasker got Cam a meeting in New York with RCA Records Chairman & CEO Peter Edge and President & COO Tom Corson. Blown away by her incredible voice and irresistible personality and charm, Edge immediately called Sony Music’s CEO, Doug Morris, who likewise fell for her undeniable talent when she auditioned for him. In a rare situation, she’s now signed to both the country (Arista Nashville) and pop (RCA Records) labels – she sees herself as a country act, but if her music breaks out of the genre or finds an audience overseas, the pop division is waiting in the wings.
