Clarice Cliff:Sunshine On A Plate !

27 Jun 2025 - 27 Jun 2025

A new play about the extraordinary life and work of trailblazing ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. Clarices striking, colourful and innovative designs have made her a household name, and some of her most famous pieces have sold for thousands of pounds. Her vibrant and joyful patterns represented the new modern spirit of the 1930s for women, bringing sunshine on a plate into many homes. The play charts her rise from humble working class beginnings to the first female art director of a famous commercial firm and it includes images of her iconic work. In her working life nothing intimidated her and she was not afraid to break the rules and stand out. In public Clarice was described as one of the romances of the pottery trade, but her private life concealed a heart wrenching secret which could have ruined her. The play is written and performed by Phoenix Arts Associate Artist Elizabeth Blake, directed by Brenda Longman and features the voice of special guest Nicholas Lumley (Paddington 2, Downton Abbey, The Crown.) The show recently sold out at The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre, Petersfield Museum & Art Gallery and The Everyman Cheltenham (Irving Studio). The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol, in an adaptation by David Harrower
The news that a government inspector is due to arrive in a small Russian town sends its bureaucrats into a panicked frenzy. A simple case of mistaken identity exposes the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town in this biting moral satire. Chaos, mayhem and hilarious consequences ensue leading to a tangled web of lies, lust and unrequited love. First published almost 200 years ago, this fresh and very funny adaptation reminds us that "plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose" - the more things change, the more they remain the same. As our own world seems caught up in ever expanding, dizzying heights of corruption, this production is a timely reminder that sometimes, the best and only thing we can do is to laugh long and loud at our morally bankrupt leaders.

Keep Your Sunny Side Up by David Hampshire
SOUTH COAST THEATRE presents Keep Your Sunny Side Up - The Gracie Fields Story by David Hampshire. In the mid-1930s Gracie Fields (1898-1979) was Britains most successful variety artist who at the height of her fame was the highest earning female performer in the world. A superstar before the word had even been invented Gracie Fields songs such as Sally, Sing As We Go, The Isle of Capri The Biggest Aspidistra In The World and Wish Me Luck (As You Wave Me Goodbye) instilled themselves in the national consciousness and many are still fondly remembered today. Perhaps not so well known however is Gracies connection to the local area as for over thirty years she lived happily in Peacehaven where she established and self-funded an orphanage for the children of impoverished variety artists. Keep You Sunny Side Up! tells the rags to riches story of Rochdale-born Gracies 75 year career recounting her tough northern upbringing, her three husbands, her life-threatening illness and the unjust way she was treated by the British press during World War Two. Featuring fifteen songs from Gracies career Keep You Sunny Side Up! paints an intimate picture of a big-hearted, no-nonsense woman who made a lasting impression both on British culture and on the people she encountered in her extraordinary life. Directed by Maurice Thorogood Musical Supervision by Moody & Moody Movement by Crissy Mullen Entertaining, enlightening and moving in equal measure, Lisa Rouselle triumphs as Gracie Fields - Adrian Barry, Director, The Music Hall Guild of Great Britain. Woyzeck By Georg Buchner

Woyzeck By Georg Buchner

15 Nov 2025 - 15 Nov 2025

"A sin so fat and thick it stinks so much you could smoke the angels out of Heaven with it" This new adaptation embraces the darkness of Woyzeck's violent, erotic, abusive and inhumane world. Georg Bchner's play tells the story of the poor soldier, Woyzeck, subject of a medical experiment and tormented by hallucinations from a diet of peas; of his wife, Marie, by whom he's fathered a child; of Marie's overpowering desire for a brute of a man - the Drum Major and, finally, of the murderous outcome of this oppressive brew. The play is widely considered to mark the beginning of modern drama exploring themes of madness, poverty and societal oppression. Georg Bchner died in 1837 before completing the play. It was found as a bundle of 20 or so scenes. There was no obvious particular order to them and his handwriting was poor. There were also many versions deemed as drafts. Subsequently, Bchner's unfinished text has given life to many different versions. "An outstanding new version and production - Dr Tristan Marshall PHD (University Cambridge, Shakespeare's Globe) awarded the production Best Actor, Best Play, Best Presentation and Adjudicator's Choice Award at Henley Drama Festival.
