Lisdoon Nirvana

Lisdoon Nirvana

10 May 2025 - 10 May 2025

For anyone who’s ever been young and dreamed of going to a festival and finding Nirvana… Lisdoon Nirvana is a dramatic monologue with live music, written and performed by Frankie McCafferty and directed by Charlie Bonner. Based on the last music festival at Lisdoonvarna in July 1983, the piece follows one young guy, Macker, and his friends making the Odyssean trip from Donegal to Clare. Travelling on the pillion of his friend’s two-stroke motorbike, they encounter 80s Ireland and young people from all over making the same pilgrimage. Laden with camping gear and cheap alcohol smuggled across the border, wearing a converted Garda riot control helmet stuffed with bin bags, and a pair of swimming goggles, our hero undergoes a rite of passage as he ventures out into the big bad beautiful world. Through his eyes we see the Folk and Rock glory of the Irish Glastonbury – and a country in transition, with a backdrop of recession, church oppression, emigration and Troubles. But right now Macker’s 17. There’s Smithwick’s in the rucksack. And rumour has it that the girls from the North are bringing hash and condoms. So that’s alright Mama…
Richard Herring: Can I Have My Ball Back?
Richard's first new stand up show in 6 years, about the momentous year where his bollock started feeling a bit weird and what that led to. In 2021 Richard Herring went to his GP to find out why his right ball seemed to be growing bigger. It turned out that he had testicular cancer and one month later he was lying in hospital waiting to have his murderous gonad removed. Would he survive? (No spoilers!). For a comedian who had done a whole show on male genitalia (Talking Cock) and written a book about toxic masculinity (The Problem With Men) this felt like some cruel trick of fate. With extra dates added in 2025 for his much-anticipated return to stand-up after six years, Richard talks bollocks and answers the question on everyone’s lips: Is a severed gonad in a jar a fitting prize to bring in for Taskmaster?

Shame Show

8 May 2025 - 8 May 2025

Honey, you've got a big storm coming. For your safety, please follow this pair of prancing poofs to SHAME SHOW, a sketchy comedy of catastrophic proportions from SkelpieLimmer, the creators of Scaredy Fat and Two Fingers Up. Adam and Stevie are stuck inside. Storm Seamus is about to strike. The rural fixer-upper they've inherited can't hack it - and neither can their relationship. But through the static of Aunt Mary's old TV comes an offer of salvation asking: Have you been mis-sold big gay shame? Wouldn't it all be better in a different, sunnier, more progressive place? Will Northern Ireland ever progress if all the progressives leave? Is there really no place like home? Channel-hopping their way through programmes of poofy-past, the couple confront home, happiness and heteronormativity as they battle the storm and each other's beliefs. A worthy First Fortnight Award winner at Dublin Fringe 2024, Colm McCready & Fergus Wachala-Kelly’s hugely entertaining and poignant SHAME SHOW disempowers the negativity that shaped us and the fear we've been force-fed, shaking off the shackles of shame for the climb ahead. Developed at MAKE, HATCH at The MAC Belfast, and Incubate at Tinderbox Theatre Company.

The Psychology of Psychopaths

13 May 2025 - 13 May 2025

Join as we tap into the science behind psychopaths. From society to psychology, you'll learn what truly makes a psychopath. Followed by Q+A. Psychopathy is a complex and often misunderstood psychological disorder that has long fascinated researchers and the public alike. The term psychopath is used widely in society and has spawned a plethora of movies, series, and documentaries. But do you know what it really means? In this talk, we will explore the developmental and wider societal factors that contribute to psychopathy. You will learn the difference between a psychopath and those with psychopathic traits. Dr Kostas Papageorgiou will also highlight some of the common outcomes of psychopathy and even some potential advantages of the condition. We will also consider why psychopathy is potentially on the rise in modern societies, despite the condition appearing as socially toxic. Can fostering understanding as opposed to demonising psychopathy help society become more diverse and inclusive? Dr Kostas Papageorgiou is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Queen’s University Belfast and Director of the MSc in Applied Developmental Psychology. His current research interests include the study of the Dark Tetrad (Psychopathy, Narcissism, Machiavellianism and Sadism), exploring its structure and the developmental factors that contribute to variation, and its outcomes such as resilience and performance. Kostas holds a PhD in Psychology specialising in Developmental Neuroscience and Genetics from Birkbeck and a MSc degree in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience from Goldsmiths. He lectures as an Associate Professor and a Visiting Professor worldwide. BBC World Service, CNN, Times, and Forbes frequently cover his research. Kostas publishes his work in peer-reviewed academic journals and serves as Associate Editor of Special Issues and Associate Editor in the journals Personality and Individual Differences and Acta Psychologica.

Holding Space

Holding Space

15 May 2025 - 15 May 2025

Holding Space is a networking event looking at the arts, displacement and mental health presented by Counterpoints Arts and the MAC Belfast For this free in-person gathering, we will hold space for artists, refugees, activists, organisers, health & wellbeing workers, creatives and migrant justice workers to come together to consider the role of art and creativity and its impact on the mental health and wellbeing of refugees and asylum seekers. The day will be structured around guest speakers and small group discussions, offering an opportunity to reflect on what good practice looks like and to discuss some of the opportunities and challenges that may be faced when developing creative projects by and with newly arrived communities with a focus on addressing mental health needs. We will also consider the mental support required by creative practitioners in these contexts and the wider systemic issues that impact negatively on mental health. The event will close with a community supper. This event is produced by Counterpoints Arts in collaboration with the MAC About Counterpoints Arts Counterpoints Arts is a leading organisation in the field of arts, migration and cultural change. We support the arts by and about refugees and migrants and we produce a range of programmes in the UK and internationally, including Refugee Week, PopChange and Platforma festival. Our work takes place at the intersection of climate, racial justice, mental health and displacement. Central to our mission is our belief that art is much more than an aesthetic experience; that it can open spaces for people to talk across differences, inspire community participation and foster a more compassionate society. Our new strand of work on mental health builds on the findings of a report we published last year, titled Creatively Minded and Refugees, commissioned by The Baring Foundation as part of their ‘Creatively Minded’ series.  Given the challenging and complex realities many artists and communities in our network have had to navigate, mental health has normally been implicit in our projects; from being forced to leave one’s homeland and losing one’s community to navigating a convoluted asylum system and being welcomed by a ‘hostile environment’, these factors can inevitably have compounding, and often harmful effects on anyone’s mental health and wellbeing. Over the course of the next two years, we plan to put the conversation of mental health at the heart of our activity and programming.

Following her recent sold out ‘Symphony for the Moons’ shows at Dublin’s National Concert Hall with the National Symphony Orchestra and London’s Barbican with the Britten Sinfonia, Lisa O’Neill performs two very special shows at the MAC. It’s been a remarkable few years for the Cavan songwriter. Her last album All of This Is Chance ranked highly on many 2023 Albums of The Year lists. Amongst the wealth of praise, BBC 6 Music’s Gideon Coe picked it as his Album Of The Year, Bob Boilen at NPR deemed it his No.3 Album of The Year and it was Mojo’s No.3 Folk Album. A raconteur in the truest sense of the word, O’Neill is a five-time BBC Folk Award nominee and her album Heard a Long Gone Song was The Guardian’s 2019 Folk Album of the Year.   Lisa has recently released a single which features vocals from Libertines, Peter Doherty - Homeless In The Thousands (Dublin in the Digital Age) - a song she felt compelled to write in response to the growing homelessness crisis in Dublin.
