They were then joined by saxophonist Davey Payne and toured the U.S.A supporting Lou Reed across North America ending with their own dates in California (with backline roadie Pete Rush) In late 1978 Chaz returned to the fold and composed ‘Hit me with your Rhythm Stick’ with Ian. The band recorded it in The Workhouse Studios, Old Kent Road, London and in 1979 had a number one hit record with it in the U.K. Ian Dury & The Blockheads went on to record the ‘Do it Yourself’ album and toured Europe and the U.K. recording ‘Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3’ in Rome. Released as a single in late 1979 it reached number three in the U.K. charts. They toured throughout 1981 in the U.K and Europe, sometimes augmented by Don Cherry on trumpet, ending the year with a tour of Australia. In 1982 Ian Dury & The Blockheads disbanded and were not to play together again until 1987 when they went out to Japan in June to play three shows in four days, disbanding again until 1990 when the death of Charlie Charles in September of that year re-united them to play two Benefit gigs in aid of Charlies’ family. Connolly's soulful vocals are interwoven into the electronic fabric of McCallum's distinctive sound-world. In turns hypnotic, lush, powerfully raw and raucously punchy, their songs entrance, uplift and break your heart as The Breath conjure a kaleidoscope of sound that perfectly frames Connolly's raw songs and soul cleansing vocals. Drawing on the influences of traditional Irish folk song, Connolly's original lyrics pour forth from her own life in a torrent of meaning. She sings songs of birth and death, woman's rights, first love, the call of motherhood, the death of men at sea and post-colonial wrongs. All delivered with compelling emotional honesty and a raw urgency as McCallum, Ellis and Bennett delve deeply into the spaces between rock, ambient, folk and jazz to deliver a powerfully hypnotic accompaniment that moves from chilled soundscapes to rocking anthems.

With captivating musicianship and a sound that is unapologetically her own, Heather Ferrier is a force to be reckoned with. An “engaging talker and magnetic performer” (NARC magazine), the Stockport born accordionist, clog dancer and composer is changing the perceptions of alt-folk on her own terms. Her latest EP Engine for the Sound creates music that sets the accordion free from its stereotypes, and with an extended line-up of musicians, expresses everything Heather stands for using powerful melodies and jazz-influenced harmony. Bold, passionate and enthralling; the EP has been played on BBC Radio 6 music, and well as being favourably reviewed in local and national publications. When performing, Heather is now joined by guitarist Alasdair Paul (Pons Aelius, Jordan Aikin and Quercus) and drummer Adam Stapleford (Ponyland, Yes! Grasshopper). On stage, the trio perform music that is an explosion of groove and melody that embellishes Heather's signature alt-folk style. The combination of Ferrier, Paul and Stapleford's medley of influences and genre-bending collaborations transcends the limits of contemporary instrumental folk music, employing Heather's distinct compositional style to create a show with both emotive and upbeat moments. As well as her solo work, Heather collaborates in the North East with RŪNN, Jon Doran and the Northern Assembly and Jordan Aikin and Quercus.

Formed from the idea of bringing together a group of established folk musicians who would mix their song-writing styles and musicianship in a full-on electric band to create exciting new music and update the classic ’60s and ’70s British folk-rock sound, the possibilities of The Magpie Arc being something special and unique on today’s folk scene became obvious very quickly. With all members being strong writers the focus is naturally on new material, however they also tackle some great cover songs plus their own re-workings of traditional songs. There’s folk, rock, a bit of country, more rock and even some elements of prog-rock but whatever the genre the band are their own musical mix of everything you could expect from such a line-up, with excellent songs, lush harmonies, scything electric guitars, gorgeous fiddle lines and rock solid bass and drums. Their first full length album, Glamour In The Grey, was released in November 2022 and enjoyed an unbroken run of twelve months in the UK Official Folk Chart where it debuted at number 9 and was punningly compared by Mojo magazine to the first ever album of the folk-rock genre in 1969 from Fairport Convention as being “Liege and Lief affirming” whilst the rockier elements were described as “an elemental racket”. Their headline Live shows are “An Evening with…” event where the band will play two sets with no support and so just a whole evening of classic UK folk and rock from The Magpie Arc.
Jean Genie - The best of David Bowie

Jean Genie - The best of David Bowie

10 Jan 2026 - 10 Jan 2026

Jean Genie was created by John Mainwaring and John Ford in 1993. An original recording artist in his own right, John Mainwaring has been signed by numerous record companies throughout his career – twice with Warner Bros. In the 1980s David Bowie’s world famous producer Tony Visconti produced some of John’s songs when he was signed to WEA. John has worked with many household names such as with Jarvis Cocker on his ‘Bad Cover Version’ single, singing and starring in the video. More recently John co-wrote and recorded all the music for Beverley Callard’s work-out fitness DVD entitled ‘Lasting Results’; she is better known as Liz McDonald in Coronation Street. As well as performing as David Bowie in Jean Genie, John is currently signed to Bucks Music Publishers. His latest achievements have been writing three songs for Tony Christie’s million selling album ‘The Definitive Collection’, plus numerous theme tunes for BBC radio. In the late 1990s John was approached by David Bowie’s most famous band of the 1970s, ‘The Spiders from Mars’ and was asked by them if he’d front the band and tour with them. Obviously John’s answer was ‘Yes’ and John remains to this day to be one of only a few tribute artists to tour and perform with an original artist’s band. John also played harmonica and sang backing vocals with Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott on the Spiders From Mars Cybernauts album. John owes a lot of his experience of working in theatres and opera houses to Mike Southon, aka Mike Fab Gere. They both met on the Big Breakfast TV show in the early 90s and later teamed up together when Mike asked if John would like to tour in Mike’s very own rock musical Freak Out. More recently John and Mike found themselves performing again on stage in Moscow in Russia. John has undertaken many press/radio and TV interviews, touring extensively around the world, playing the character of Ziggy Stardust for five years. These days John prides himself on the quality of his singing voice, mannerisms and overall style of David Bowie, many of John’s latest performances have been with Trevor Chance’s famous show of ‘Legends’ in Blackpool.

Ruth Lyon

Ruth Lyon

9 Oct 2025 - 23 Oct 2025

Newcastle folk/chamber pop artist Ruth Lyon found herself feeling like crap every time Vogue magazine dropped onto her front door mat, yet still she didn’t cancel her subscription. Even as the pages prodded at insecurities there was something strangely addictive about mindlessly flipping through it every month. The situation inspired the title of her second EP, Direct Debit To Vogue (2022), produced by John Parish, who has notably worked with PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding and This Is The Kit. The songs explore self-doubt, insecurity, emotional masochism, the weight of arbitrary expectations. All of this is un-ravelled through offbeat, sophisticated chamber pop and anti-folk, commanded by Lyon’s soulful vocals and witty yet raw lyricism. Over the years, she’s established herself as a key and active member of the Newcastle music scene, including in her role on the board of directors at Sage Gateshead and as lead singer of cult folk rockers Holy Moly & The Crackers. She has also advocated for the Disabled community in her work as an ambassador for Attitude Is Everything, a charity that aims to improve accessibility for Deaf and Disabled people in live music; Lyon herself has been a wheelchair user since the age of 21. The key themes that Lyon found were at the core of all these songs were power in fragility, and beauty in imperfection. This turns on its head all the societal assumptions represented by those Vogue magazines and opens up doors to a new kind of self-acceptance and power. “I want it to be very inclusive, like anybody could listen to any of the songs and come up with their own story, or it would mirror their individual circumstances,” she says. “I wanted to evoke the feeling of the kinda music that just punches you in the gut. Rather than ‘oh, this is pretty, this is nice’ — I want to emotionally drag some stuff out of people.” She concludes Direct Debit to Vogue’s journey with four simple words: “I’ve found my voice.”

Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra

Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra

18 Oct 2025 - 27 Mar 2026

Rob Heron & the Tea Pad Orchestra are one of the hardest working bands in the UK roots circuit. With thousands of touring miles under their belts, they have earned themselves a sizeable fanbase in the UK, Europe and beyond. Based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, they play their own brand of Western Swing, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Country, or North Eastern Swing as they've coined it. Their style is more eclectic than most, influenced by early 20th century American music, with the addition of razor-sharp solos, great arrangements and original songs; their music harks back to a golden age whilst staying perfectly modern. The songs are penned by Rob Heron, a crazy fool for country music and a full time dandy-cowboy. His songs are full of character, satire, and good old fashion hollerin'.The band, a hot six-piece, features Ben Fitzgerald (guitar), Tom Cronin (mandolin), Colin Nicholson (accordion), Ted Harbot (double bass) and Paul Archibald (drums). Their debut album, 'Money Isn't Everything', caused a sensation when it was released in 2012, winning a host of rave reviews many of them 5-star. The Other Neville

The Other Neville

18 Oct 2025 - 18 Oct 2025

The Other Neville is a powerful one-woman play, imaginatively inspired by England netball legend Tracey Neville. Born into an elite sporting family, Tracey made her mark in a sport no one was watching – netball – leaving a legacy that can’t be ignored. Set in the ‘locker room of her memories’, we meet Tracey in March 2019, months after leading the Roses to Commonwealth gold and moments before making one of the hardest decisions of her life. Caught between ambition, grief, and pride – yet still yearning for more – Tracey takes us from northern courts to the world stage; player to coach, sister to leader. Told with heart, humour, and a netball, this is women’s sport from the inside – the pressure, the power, the personal cost. Written and performed by Rochdale-born actor Imogen Greenwood, in collaboration with Shared Experience.

Hannah Aldridge

Hannah Aldridge

30 Oct 2025 - 23 Nov 2025

Hannah Aldridge grew up on the muddy banks of Muscle Shoals—her birthright is music and Alabama. A reckoning between her coming-of-age in the South and a lifetime of trying to create an identity outside of it, her songs strike a delicate balance between rebellion and self-discovery. These two themes weave through Aldridge’s gifted storytelling, making for records that soothe like a lullaby and crack like a whip. For those raised in the Bible Belt, Aldridge’s music sounds like the voice of an old friend who understands. For those not in the know, her music is an initiation to the dark side of the South, Christian fundamentalism and the struggle to forge a future in a place haunted by its past.

Don’t miss this very special one-off gig in celebration of The Met’s fiftieth anniversary, curated by Manchester singer-songwriter and Met artist in residence Liam Frost. Appearing alongside Liam will be Adam Hopper and The Wimps, The Black Mile, Charlotte Mary, and Denver. Adam Hopper and The Wimps have more hooks than a fisherman’s tackle box. Forged in the box room of a Ladybarn terraced house and honed in the pub back rooms and small venues of Manchester and the North of England, they provide a mixture of anti-folk tinged pop and rock and roll, equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking. During 2024 the band released a string of singles via Sheffield cult label Bingo Records, followed by their debut EP Remember to Have Fun in 2025, to great praise, even earning them a coveted live session on the Marc Riley show on BBC Radio 6 Music. Charlotte Mary, a country music songwriter from the north-west, has been writing for over a decade. Known for her “feisty country-soaked songs about love, breakups, and the assured swagger of a woman who knows it’s all about three chords and the truth”, Charlotte’s music blends classic country storytelling with a modern edge. In recent years, Charlotte has performed all over the UK and across the Atlantic, including in North Carolina and Nashville. Her writing style is deeply inspired by the storytelling of Bruce Springsteen and the powerful vocals of Shania Twain. Her authentic lyrics and catchy melodies continue to connect with listeners, establishing her as a rising presence in the UK country music scene.

However, he also possesses an enviable back catalogue as a solo artist and continues to work on new material under the guise of his latest band, John Bramwell & The Full Harmonic Convergence. Bramwell’s first studio output appeared in 1989, when he was performing and recording as Johnny Dangerously and entitled You Me & The Alarm Clock, an album The Guardian referred to as one of the ‘greatest albums you’ve never heard.’ Following a stint as a television presenter and as a member of the band, The Mouth, Bramwell formed I Am Kloot, with two members of The Mouth. They went on to record six studio albums, including the Mercury-Prize nominated album, Sky At Night. Since 2016, Bramwell has reverted to being a solo artist and tours continuously, around the UK and Europe. A home-recorded solo album, Leave Alone the Empty Spaces appeared in 2018 and the follow-up, a more expansive affair, with a working title of The Light Fantastic, is now scheduled for release in 2022.

Transglobal Underground

Transglobal Underground

27 Nov 2025 - 16 May 2026

Few acts in the UK can demonstrate such a profound influence, a multifaceted legacy, and carry such a mysterious legendary status as Transglobal Underground. From their origins in the dance scene in the early ’90s they became one of the country’s best loved festival bands, a techno sound system, a pop group, a club night, a Middle Eastern hit production team, an improvised study group for Indian classical music, an Albanian brass band, a duo… or was it an octet?… Transglobal Underground exploded onto the club scene with the club classic Temple Head a track with inspiration taken from the UK bhangra scene, with one foot in the Madchester and indie worlds, and another in club music. The mix was totally new (DJs loved it but couldn’t work out what speed to play it at) and the track is still regularly played on the radio today. The collective went on to practically create a new genre with a series of albums mixing a heady concoction of club grooves, dub, bhangra, rock, digital hardcore and oriental melody, driven by the possibilities of musical technology, inspiration and a massive belief in the need to create something creating a bar that kept others looking for the next level of global experimentation. The best known albums are probably the most recent, Walls Have Ears, the top 20 Dream of 100 Nations and the BBC award winning Moonshout but they’re almost as well known for their collaborations with artists such as Page and Plant, original lead vocalist Natacha Atlas, the Trio Bulgarka, and Fanfara Tirana. Lineup: Tuup (vocalist, percussionist, one of the UK’s leading storytellers); Hamid Mantu (founder member, drums, percussion); Sheema Mukherjee (sitar, bass – Cornershop, Imagined Village); Rav Neiyyar (tabla, dhol – Bollywood Band, Diamond Cut); and Tim Whelan (founder member, keyboards, machines).

The Met 50: Signed Heritage Tour

13 Sept 2025 - 13 Sept 2025

Join us for a FREE BSL signed tour of The Met. Did you know that The Met held one of Joy Division’s most famous gigs with a raucous crowd protesting against a change of singers? Did you know that it was the democratic home to where many of Bury’s major decisions were made, or where the accused were given their freedom of speech in a court of law? Join us for a FREE tour with The Met’s very own Nick Smale. Visit backstage areas normally closed to the public, and learn all about the history of this fascinating building and about how it is used today. This tour will be interpreted in British Sign Language (BSL) for people with hearing difficulties or for whom BSL is their preferred language. If you do not require signing to enjoy the tour, please book on the unsigned version of the event.
