Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

4 Oct 2025 - 4 Oct 2025

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair. This is the true story of ‘Fair Cop’ Alfie’s big plan to transition from the BBC radio waves to TV star. Could it be done? Or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

Attention All Shipping - A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast
As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster Charlie Connelly’s hilarious and informative show brings the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he regards as the greatest invention of the modern age. How did a weather forecast for ships capture the hearts of a nation, from salty old sea dog to insomniac landlubber? How is it possible for ‘rain later’ to be ‘good’? And where the hell is North Utsire? Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares riproaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas – the times he was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government and sang sea shanties with Tom Hardy in a Manx hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled the pints - and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement. Inspired by Charlie’s bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide, this pacy, moving and hilarious show takes you all the way from Viking to South-East Iceland to ensure the shipping forecast will never sound the same again. “Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with…He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it.” Fi Glover, broadcaster “Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging…I actually sent him a fan letter - and I've never done that to anyone in my life before.” Bernard Sumner, New Order “I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent. Sou’westers optional.” Corrie Corfield, BBC Radio 4

The 309s are first class, hard-working musicians and deserve every encouragement through these hard times.Bookers, venue owners, get on the line to these boys; theyre very good. Maverick Magazine. West Yorkshire 5 piece, The 309s, have spent the last 14 years rocking and rolling their swing jive repertoire at events all over the country. Think Hank Williams, Bob Wills and Louis Jordan joining forces to make a classic 20th century sound that is the roots of Rock and Roll. Crowds have danced the days and nights away to the 309s beat at an extraordinary range of festivals and gigs. What we do There's been one hell of a lot of popular music recorded since gramophones were invented. So much to choose from... The 309s take their pick of songs mostly from the southern States of America, in the years between 1925 and 1955. This gives us quite a range of music, from Western Swing ("jazz with a cowboy hat") created in Texas by Bob Wills, right through to Rock 'n' Roll's early days in Memphis, Tennessee. On the way we take in sub-genres such as country boogie and jump blues songs, now popular with jive dancers. No wonder, who can keep their feet still to Big Joe Turners Shake Rattle and Roll? We took these wonderful songs, we worked out what makes them tick, and now we use our instruments and skills to play them the best way we can. So was created the unique 309s sound, and it gets your feet jumping. Some are fast, a few are slow and romantic, and the rest are played with just the right pace and swing so you can dance all your favourite fancy moves. Since 2015 we have been adding our own songs to the mix. Created to sound like classics from the 40s & 50s, you'd be hard pressed to know which is old and which is new. Whichever it is, we're going to give you a good good good good time!

Straighten Out - A Tribute to The Stranglers
STRAIGHTEN OUT are the worlds premier Stranglers tribute band with an extensive set-list that spans two solid hours as they re-create the 'early years' sound of The Stranglers, complete with a Hammond organ and Minimoog synth; the same models used by Mr. Greenfield himself, back in the day! The growling bass sound and the quirky guitar riffs are all there to be heard as is the dual vocal 'attack' from the two frontmen a-la Burnel/Cornwell as they rip through the Stranglers classic: 'Peaches', 'Hanging Around', 'No More Heroes', '5 Minutes', 'The Raven', 'Walk on By', 'Straighten Out', 'Down In The Sewer' and many more as they cover the Stranglers' early classic albums and beyond. Straighten Out will take you on a nostalgia trip that transports you back to those raw, powerful, exhilarating times when The Stranglers emerged through the quagmire of mediocrity to produce some of the finest music ever written. Straighten Out will put you back in that place! Bassist Shaggy and keyboard player Mick ('The Doc') were together in previous Stranglers tribute band 'Four More Heroes' and it was only natural that these two continued on after their demise to form 'Straighten Out' given their love of Stranglers music and the desire to keep playing live. They set the platform with the growling bass and swirling keyboard sound so essential to reproducing the authentic Stranglers sound. Joining them are Jet Beets on drums and Phil on guitar - providing the 'Hugh' element - to complete the fearsome foursome. Straighten Out are a must-see tribute band!
