In this facilitator led session babies aged 0-2 and their adults can explore a range of themes through the lens of our fabulous collections. There are opportunities to look at materials in different ways and get creative with how to play. Suitable for children aged 0-2 with their carers. Important Information Minimum ratio of 1 adult to 2 children. Maximum ratio of 2 adults to 1 child. All children and adults attending this session must have a ticket. This is to ensure we can manage numbers for everyone's safety and enjoyment. 75 Years of the Model Railway with Pete Waterman
Experience the Museum of Making at Night as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Museum of Makings Model Railway with a special Q&A featuring model railway enthusiast extraordinaire Pete Waterman. Not only has Pete amassed an incredible amount of platinum discs and amazing anecdotes from his many years in the music industry, but hes also an avid model railwayer. Pete and his compadres the Railnuts are Guinness World Record Holders for Making Tracks, the largest portable model railway in the world! The evening will feature a special night-time opportunity to see the model railway in action, the chance to meet some of the volunteers who have spent many thousands of hours on the model, and a Q&A with Pete Waterman, who will be talking about his love of model railways, with a few choice tales from his showbiz years thrown in. The Museum of Making bar will be open throughout.
Cookie Cutters: An Intro to Tinsmithing
About this event Following on from a Heritage Crafts Association masterclass led by Master Tinsmith Karl Schmidt; this introductory course, led by our amazing Workshop Technician Arthur Scott, will take you through the basics of tinplate working to assemble your very own custom cookie cutter. Working in the Museum of Making Workshop, you will learn a variety of techniques using basic tinsmiths tools, including cutting, creasing, forming and soldering to shape and assemble the tinplate. Tinsmithing is on the Heritage Crafts Association Red List of Critically Endangered Crafts, classed as those that are at serious risk of no longer being practised in the UK. You will also discover fascinating connections to Derby Museums collections of making, which chart the progress of Derbys ongoing manufacturing history and the people who were involved. Who is this course for? Participants must be at least 16 years old, and those aged 16-17 must be accompanied by a paying adult. The course is limited to a maximum of ten people to ensure participants are fully supported. Do I need to bring anything? All materials, tools, equipment and aprons will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothes that you dont mind getting a bit dirty and closed-toe shoes. There will be an hour lunch break. Refreshments and lunch is available to purchase from The River Kitchen at the Museum of Making and we advise that you pre-order your food at the start of the day to avoid waiting. Milk Bottle Mallets Workshop

This course centres around recycling and sustainable creation. The aim is to educate you on how to turn HDPE (high density polyethylene) plastic into beautiful and functional materials/tools, the outcome will be your very own milk bottle mallet. Multimedia Artist and Maker Arthur Scott will lead you through the processes; melting and casting HDPE, finishing the surfaces and drilling an eye for the handle, turning a handle on the lathe and setting it in the head with a hardwood wedge. You will be given a handle blank and a 50mm/50mm/100mm HDPE billet. You will take part in one melt/cast which will use colour from lids and other HDPE sources, this is to show you every stage and to show that you can include colour to create marble effect. You will also encounter unique and beautiful items from Derby Museums collections to inspire your own creations. When does this course take place? A day course on Saturday 15th Who is this course for? This course is suitable for complete beginners, seasoned makers and anywhere in between. Participants must be aged 18 years and over. Spaces are limited to 4 participants. Do I need to bring anything? All materials, tools, equipment and aprons will be provided. However, we encourage you to bring any photos or drawings you would like to use as inspiration. About this course: The theme of this one-day workshop will be to concentrate solely on the challenging but rewarding process of hand cutting that most quintessential of cabinet making joints - the dovetail.M To begin, you will be taken step by step through a practice joint to be followed by making a hardwood dovetailed mobile phone stand to take away. As well as learning to cut your own joints, you will leave having gained instruction in: measuring, marking out, sawing and paring with a chisel; to further your woodworking knowledge and skills. Who is this workshop for: This workshop is suitable for those that may have some experience in the use of woodworking tools or are confident beginners. As part of Wool Month, explore how fabrics are woven from wool! In this workshop youll learn the foundations of how woven fabrics are constructed. Well learn 3 of the main woven constructions and use these to create an off-loom woven artwork for you to take home. Youll have the opportunity to play with different colours and yarn types and well discuss how the combinations of colours, textures and patterns will affect your weaving. All materials are included in the workshop and each attendee will receive a guide on how to continue to their weaving at home. About the artist: Katie is a Derbyshire based Textile Designer & Maker who develops contemporary woven textiles from her home studio. With almost 4 years working in British furniture manufacturing, Katie firmly believes in the importance of protecting and developing craft skills. Not only does this mean that she buys much less new yarn (better for the planet!), but the range of colours and textures are so exciting and unexpected. Sarah loves to encourage others to learn how to weave, and to get as much enjoyment from this craft as she does.

Join weaver Sarah Cooke, where you will incorporate colourful materials which are often thrown away, such as plastic packaging, old phone cables, fabric off-cuts, to make a unique wall hanging, table mat or small bag. All materials supplied, but you can bring your own waste materials if you want. This workshop is inspired by World 240, contributed by a participant in France. It is 2029 and fast fashion companies are adopting a farm-to-closet strategy and a shift towards sustainability and ethical responsibility. In her enlightening talk, you will explore Lauras work for Creatively Connected Wearing the Uplands where Wool acts as a tool for shared and unfolding conversations around farming, ecology and change in upland landscapes. A taste of the traditional art of weaving pictures! First you will learn how to put the warp on a simple frame loom, and how to do plain weave. Through the day you will learn a variety of weaving techniques to create pictorial images on your piece. All materials supplied, and you can buy the frame loom at the end of the session for 18, if you wish. Join textile artist Seiko Kinoshita to create your own stitched identity by learning the ancient and traditional art of Sashiko. Sashiko has been used for centuries in Japanese culture to adorn and mend clothing, and Seiko will guide you on how you can experiment with your techniques to make clothes unique, last longer and be your own skill signature. All materials provided, but please feel free to bring an item of your clothing to adorn or mend with Sashiko. Learn to lino print and construct your own lampshade in a day. In this workshop, youll be guided through designing your pattern and cutting your own lino block. Using natural dye inks, youll learn to print your design onto beautiful, pure linen fabric. After drying and heat setting the fabric, youll then be taught to roll your handprinted textile onto a 30cm drum shade, creating a professional quality lampshade. Youll leave with your very own handprinted shade, which would be suitable as a ceiling pendant or for use with a lampshade base. Youll also have gained the skills and knowledge to continue your making at home! All tools and materials are included in the workshop. About the artist: Katie is a Textile Designer & Maker who develops contemporary woven textiles and home furnishings from her home studio in Belper, Derbyshire. With almost 4 years working in British furniture manufacturing, Katie firmly believes in the importance of protecting and developing craft skills. Katie shares her textile skills and ethos through a variety of different workshops.
