Manja Scott & Jeff Clarke: Creative Contrasts
This exhibition celebrates a long friendship between two artists who have contrasting styles but warmly appreciate each other’s visual language. Manja Scott was born in Zagreb, Croatia, but lived more than a third of her adult life in Africa – Ethiopia, Zambia, Kenya. She came to live in the UK in 1982. With the exception of various courses in Combined Arts, Printed Textiles, Print Making, she is self-taught. Her most important influences are twentieth century art, tribal world cultures, and the amazing ever-changing beauty of nature. Jeff Clarke trained through the 1950s at the Brighton College of Art and in Italy with a Prix de Rome scholarship in engraving. Later he etched and painted regularly in Crete alongside the role of draughtsman to the British School of Archaeology until 1996. The regular periods of vibrant sunlight had a profound effect on his work in colour, tone and line. For this exhibition both artists show a considered selection of retrospective and recent work. Manja with essentially coloured abstracts; Jeff with observed drawings in black and white, most of still life and close environment.

Once upon a time we shared this planet with many species of human – it has been said that our world was a bit like Lord of the Rings. To start with we Homo sapiens weren’t that remarkable, our origins were in fact rather humble and yet somehow today we are the only ones left. But we didn’t just survive against all odds, we thrived, innovated and travelled like no other species of human – becoming the explorer species who built cities, iPhones and painted the Sistine Chapel. Exploring Strengths in Autism A Zine Making Workshop Study
This exhibition features a collection of Zines created by 18 autistic young people who participated in the “Exploring Character Strengths in Autism – Zine Making Workshop Study”, led by Dr. Jiedi Lei’s research team at the University of Oxford. This research study focused on helping autistic children and young people challenge unhelpful stereotypes associated with how autism is portrayed through popular film / TV and media, and to change the narrative by recognising their personal unique strengths and abilities through exploring Character Strengths. Character Strengths make up 24 universal traits that we all hold (e.g., Bravery, Creativity, and Kindness) and motivate us to take action in everyday life. All young people created Zines – a do-it-yourself publication – that showcased their individual stories of exploring strengths use in everyday life. Guided by young people’s voices and their Zine creations, we hope that visitors will learn about autism through a strengths focused lens to celebrate individual differences in neurodiversity. This work is supported by the Public and Community Engagement with Research (PCER) Fund at the University of Oxford and The Paul Foundation.
Cally Trench and Tineke Bruijnzeels: Day after day after day
Daily drawings by the two artists lie at the heart of this exhibition: Tineke Bruijnzeels’ project ‘One more line a day’ using a wide variety of materials and Cally Trench’s ‘Left Hand, Right Hand’ drawings in ink. Both projects reveal the passage of time, and focus on the unit of the day – the most important measure of time in our lives, the unit that governs our routines of waking, sleeping, eating and work. The exhibition also includes Tineke’s new patterned abstract oil paintings; curiosity and play are the driving forces behind this project: within the rules that Tineke has set herself, what will emerge? This will also be the first chance to see Cally’s new series of drawings of flooded houses, which continue her exploration of the fragility of everyday life, as well as a new board game and animation films. Exhibition Opening Tuesday 30 June 6-8pm Drawing Workshop with the Artists Thursday 2 July 2-3.30pm Free event / booking required Meet Cally Trench Wednesday 15 July 11am-12.30pm Exhibition Tour and Discussion with the Artists Saturday 8 August 2-4pm Free event / booking required
