Darkside: The Pink Floyd Show

13 Sept 2025 - 13 Sept 2025

Darkside, The Pink Floyd Show, a tribute to the music of Britain’s greatest progressive rock band, make their first visit to Mansfield with the 'With Friends Surrounded Tour'. After 15 years of touring, playing at theatres across the UK, seven musicians will deliver a show with empathy and passion playing tracks from Pink Floyds massive back-catalogue, from the early magical days of founder Syd Barrett through to later iconic albums, renowned for their complex structures, such as Dark Side of The Moon. The emphasis will be on replicating the experience of Pink Floyd live on stage in the 70’s which many believe was Floyd at their very best. The superb Cariss Auburn takes on the role of Clare Torry, who performed Great Gig in the Sky on the original 1973 Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon, recreating this unique enigmatic vocal with its extra-terrestrial soundscape which has been leaving audiences enthralled. As would be expected, the show incorporates a spectacular and dramatic laser light show and evocative images and animated sequences projected on a circular screen, which were key features of Pink Floyds live performances.

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

Alfie Moore: A Face for Radio

17 May 2025 - 11 Jul 2025

Somewhere in a parallel universe little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history. Meanwhile, in this universe Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police. In his 40s the two universes collided when Alfie made a bid for showbiz success – but unfortunately 30 years of shift-work and being punched in the face quite a lot, had left him with ‘a face for radio’. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair. This is the true story of ‘Fair Cop’ Alfie’s big plan to transition from the BBC radio waves to TV star. Could it be done? Or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

Trelawny's Cornwall

Trelawny's Cornwall

18 May 2025 - 18 May 2025

Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson on 29 May 2025 in paperback at £10.99 It would be hard to think of a more thoroughly Cornish name than Petroc Trelawny. His first name is shared with one of Cornwall's most celebrated saints, his second is the name of its unofficial national anthem. But when a stranger challenges the Radio 3 presenter on his ancestry, he is inspired to return to the lands of his boyhood to rediscover the place where he grew up, and attempt to confirm if he still belongs there. Part history, part memoir, this is a deeply felt exploration of Cornwall - past, present and future. Petroc embarks on a slow journey that sees him visit old mine workings, ancient churches, sites where new technology was forged, and places where poets, musicians, architects and film makers have worked to shape Cornwall's cultural identity. Petroc Trelawny explores the Tamar, the river that marks out the Cornish frontier, and holds a finger up to winds of change, exploring the collapse of Methodism, the decline of the Cornish language, and the complex , sometimes lucrative, sometimes destructive, relationship with tourism. As he travels by road, rail and foot, he conjures marvelously vivid figures and scenes from memory, telling the stories of a loving family full of mysteries and a landscape still redolent of 'Cornish otherness'. Petroc Trelawny grew up on the Lizard Peninsula in the far south of Cornwall. He presents Breakfast on BBC Radio 3. He was part of the commentary team for BBC Television's coverage of the Coronation of King Charles III and the funeral of Her Majesty The Queen and has presented BBC Proms on radio and television for more than two decades. He will be in conversation with Poppy Wonnacott and this event will include a brief Q&A with the audience.

Tom Michell: 'The Penguin Lessons' (in conversation with Suzanne Hargreaves)
The extraordinary tenacity with which Juan Salvador the penguin clung to life, and his determination to survive the catastrophic oil spill that killed thousands of other birds, was a defining characteristic. It was with equal determination that, after Tom Michell found him, cleaned him, and tried to return him to the sea, he refused to go, electing instead to stay with his rescuer and gave Tom no alternative but to smuggle him back to Argentina. Such was Juan Salvador's zest for life that he came to befriend all of the staff and students at St George's College, Buenos Aires, where Tom taught, making a difference to so many lives in the dark and dangerous days of the fascist military dictatorship of the time. That Juan Salvador, as the subject of Tom's book, should have been so celebrated can be no surprise, and his story has been translated into 24 other languages, featured as an audio book read by Bill Nighy, been incorporated into the national curriculum of South Korea and been used by Cambridge University International GCSE exams board on two occasions. Now a big budget film about him, starring Steve Coogan and Sir Jonathan Pryce, is due for release in the UK on 18th April, followed by showings all around the world.
