Laurence Jones

Laurence Jones

23 May 2025 - 7 Jun 2025

Although Laurence doesn’t need too much of an introduction in the music business, for those that haven’t had the chance to see him yet, it’s well worth sharing a thing or two about this artist! He sings, he plays and he writes -- a triple craft -- and he does so like a veteran twice his age, but absolutely no ego and with both feet firmly on the ground! Hailed as 'one to watch' as a teenager by the blues media, concert/festival bookers, blues fans and various guitar stars alike, young Laurence really has come of age. The blues cub has become a man with a plan, turning heads and making jaws drop with his take-no-prisoners, incendiary live set and stunning records. Laurence and his crack band -- Jones on vocals and guitars, Roger Inniss on bass and Phil Wilson on drums -- put the power into power trio, with their modern day blues rock with an edge.

Snayx + Murderers Are Optimists

Snayx + Murderers Are Optimists

14 Jun 2025 - 14 Jun 2025

SNAYX were formed from a mosh pit. Sure, the Brighton & Sheffield based trio have been in other bands before, dabbling in everything from indie rock to ska, but those groups never incited the communal carnage that Charlie Herridge, Ollie Horner and Lainey Loops crave. So they formed SNAYX, originally a two-piece, now a three. For a good chunk of time though, SNAYX was more of an idea than an actual band since the pair were too busy going to as many gigs as possible, rather than working on things like songs. They’d talk about SNAYX to anyone who would listen though, hungry to be part of the scene. And then in the smoking area of a Brighton venue, Hastings punks Kid Kapichi invited them to open for them. Of course, SNAYX said yes, despite the fact they didn’t have a finished song between them. That changed over a frantic few days, where all of those conversations about ethos, influence and intention quickly turned into a furious 30-minutes of music. The gig went better than it had any right to, and SNAYX were born. A series of support slots followed, alongside a very DIY headline tour. “That’s when everything clicked into place,” says Charlie. “Onstage we really understood what it was, and what it could be.” Presented by The Piper. Wasted Youth

Wasted Youth were an English post-punk band from London, England, active between 1979 and 1982, which blended post-punk/pre-Goth with dark acoustic strains of the sort associated with Nick Drake and Syd Barrett. Frank From Blue Velvet + Special Guests
Keeping it local with three acts all just a short hop away from the venue. Frank From Blue Velvet blend a heady cocktail of post-punk, gospel, blues, rockabilly and whatever else strikes their fancy. Their live performances radiate a raw power and energy, and their sound has been described as "Johnny Cash falling down a wormhole into a garage rock show”. Their second album ‘I Am Frank’ is due in May. Originally a studio project, releasing the well-received download single ‘Dead Man’s Guitar’, JR Sellers & the San Leonardo Swangers have since grown into an actual five-piece, with a brief that stretches from Hank Williams to Marlon Williams via any stopping points that interest along the way. This is their St Leonards debut. Hastings Punk Choir were conceived in a barn in Fairlight in 2021, and since that miracle, have never stopped making a lot of noise. They sing acapella arrangements of punk and post-punk classics, and they don’t care. Presented by The Piper. This is an 18+ event

Swell Maps Plus Support From Beau

31 May 2025 - 31 May 2025

In 1972, a group of six English teenagers started creating music together in their English suburban home-town of Solihull. This project evolved until it came to be known as Swell Maps, with four core musicians: the late Nikki Sudden (guitar & vocals), Nikki’s brother, the late Epic Soundtracks (drums & keyboards), Jowe Head (bass & vocals), and Richard Earl (guitar & vocals). They recorded their debut single, “Read About Seymour” in 1977, and released this on their own label, Rather Records. Swell Maps were one of the first punk bands to set up an “independent” label, and release a “do-it- yourself” record. They are known as pioneers of “Alternative Rock”, mixing punk rock with experimental and psychedelic sounds. The current musicians are: Jowe Head (vocals, guitar), a founder-member of Swell Maps. David Callahan (vocals, guitar), formerly in Wolfhounds and Moonshake. Jeff Bloom (drums), formerly in Television Personalities. Lucie Rejchrtova (keyboards), formerly in Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. New Candys + Chimer

New Candys + Chimer

8 Jun 2025 - 8 Jun 2025

Concocted with the darkest deviant rock'n'roll ethos and distinctive melodic distortions, New Candys have established themselves as one of the most compelling bands to emerge from Italy in recent years. Founded by songwriter and singer-guitarist Fernando Nuti alongside bassist and synth player Dario Lucchesi, the lineup is completed by Emanuele Zanardo on lead guitar and backing vocals and Francesco Giacomin on drums and sampler. Signed to the cult record label Fuzz Club, the band is recognized for its unfiltered artistic approach and versatility, seamlessly blending aggressive, gritty sounds with dreamy, introspective tones. The symbolism of their hometown, Venezia, often permeates their music, which explores surreal and sometimes cryptic themes. New Candys' live shows have gained them a reputation as a must-see act, growing a fanbase through extensive touring across Europe, North America and Australia. They’ve shared the stage with icons like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Dandy Warhols and The Black Angels, performing at historic venues such as the Olympia Hall in Paris, The Roundhouse in London and Huxleys Neue Welt in Berlin. Iggy Pop described them as "kinky", and their songs have been featured in episodes of Showtime’s original series Shameless. Presented by The Piper. This is an 18+ event

Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell, Scritti Politti, and The Mekons, CUD were the pre-Britpop answer to doleful shoegazing bands - fun-loving, light-hearted, romantic and downright catchy. Alternatively loved or loathed like a yeast extract, CUD are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight, funky rhythm section of William Potter, bass and Gogs Byrn, drums. CUD were initially lauded for their quirky Peel session cover of ‘You Sexy Thing’ in 1987. They soon built up a huge live following and buffed up their repertoire with a string of unstraight pop beauties, best exemplified by the 1990 album ‘Leggy Mambo’. This led to a major-label deal with A&M in 1991, front-page NME coverage, massive sellout gigs and proper Top 30 hits, ‘Rich and Strange’ and ‘Purple Love Balloon’. Misunderstood by record companies and press, CUD packed away their guitars and sticks in 1995 but, bolstered by a greatest hits anthology (‘Rich and Strange’) in 2006, they agreed to tread the boards again, with a further reunion following in 2012 (now with original guitarist and key songwriter Mike Dunphy) and continue to find an army of ‘Space CUDets’ still eager to sing along, dance like fruitcakes and invade their stage. Having split at the end of 1982, Wasted Youth returned in February 2022, initially for a couple of low-key gigs, but when tickets sold-out within minutes of going on sale, it became clear that there was still a demand for Wasted Youth and their brand of controlled chaos, pulsating rhythms and beautiful stories from the darker side of life. Original members Ken Scott and Rocco Barker (also ex-Flesh for Lulu), were joined by younger musicians Josef Rosam (Gtr), Sabrina Amade (Bass) and Alan Temple (Drums). They went on to play the Wide Awake and Rebellion festivals, as well as supporting the Psychedelic Furs (again!) on their UK tour and supporting PWEI in a short series of sell-out shows. Wasted Youth have also played lots of sold-out headline gigs all over the country. Their long awaited album ‘Neo Noir’ was recorded over several months in 2024/2025 at WSTLVN Recording Studio in Notting Hill, London. Produced by Ken Scott and engineered by Kevin Harris, it features nine original compositions, and captures the band in exciting and vibrant form. Wasted Youth are not a nostalgia act or a band trading on the past; they are eager to take ‘Neo Noir’ to a wider audience and this contemporary sounding album will delight both new and old fans alike. Special guests are Jopy, a young and exciting three-piece, who supported Wasted Youth at The Piper last year and so impressed that they've been asked to play with us again. Presented by The Piper. Gaye Bykers on Acid

9 May 2025 - 23 Jan 2026

Formed in Leicester in 1985 the Gaye Bykers on Acid rose to fame with their first independent release "Everythang's Groovy", which reached the Indie top 10. The Bykers followed their initial success with the "Nosedive Karma EP", which topped the independent charts. With their incendiary live shows their fan base grew, including a now infamous appearance at Glastonbury festival. The band were one of the first to fuse rocking riffs with Hip Hop beats and along with Pop Will Eat Itself became a part of the "Grebo" movement and in turn became front page news. Ahead of their time or just out of their minds, the Bykers were flavour of the month, which led the band to sign a deal with Virgin records, with whom they made 2 albums, "Drill your own hole" which was the soundtrack to a movie of the same name and the critically acclaimed "Stewed to the Gills". The Bykers then went stateside playing with the Cult at Madison Square Garden, where they impressed a watching Joey Ramone, who offered the band a support slot on the Ramones upcoming European tour. The band continued to evolve musically exploring new styles. Touring the UK, US and Europe it was this hedonistic and hectic schedule that eventually led the band to finally self-destruct in 1990... The original line up reformed in 2016 to play the Indie Daze festival and buoyed by the positive response they decided to carry on.

Morton Valence + O'connell & Co.

26 Jun 2025 - 26 Jun 2025

Urban country legends Morton Valence make a long overdue return to the Piper, with a full band in tow, after a barnstorming night last October with the Long Ryders. They take the classic boy/girl ballad, add a touch of country music, sweet harmony and a good yarn, feed it through their own left-field filter, and produce something very much their own, which has been captivating music fans for more years than Morton Valence care to remember. They were once described in the Guardian as being, "the most intriguing band on these shores" and have collaborated with BJ Cole, Alabama 3, the Long Ryders, the Band of Holy Joy and many others. They have made films, one of which was recently screened at the Doc n' Roll festival, created dance performances, toured extensively in the UK and Europe, had a BBC 'record of the week', and produced half-a-dozen or so critically acclaimed albums along the way. Yet they have always managed to somehow remain elusive, uncompromisingly doing their own thing, whatever way the wind happens to be blowing, consistently producing original music, witty and insightful songwriting, as well as putting on a captivating live show. You can divide the world into 2 types of people; people who have never heard of Morton Valence, and those who are fans, come along on June 26th for a rare live performance, whoever you are. 13 Jun 2025 - 13 Jun 2025

When most bands get round to releasing album number five their sound, weighed down by expectation or having resorted to formula, has generally ossified. It might still sound good and fans will probably lap it up, but the days of adventure and exploration are quite often long gone. Warmduscher are not most bands. Rather than closing up shop, on album number five - the magical Too Cold To Hold - they are most determinedly opening up. Taking on board the repetitive and polyrhythmic grooves of gqom (an alluring South African take on house music), adding in a dash of hip hop flavours and even jazz, and then harnessing that to their punk-funk, disco pogo, it’s a spellbinding mix that results in their best and most ambitious album to date. You could say they - the wonderful 12-legged groove machine comprised of Clams Baker Jr., Benjamin Romans Hopcraft, Adam J. Harmer, Marley Mackey, Quinn Whalley, and Bleu Ottis Wright - were, in fact, just getting started. Presented by The Piper. This is an 18+ event

Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that at once conjures both angels and demons, and will enlighten a darkened soul. Gothic Americana is a genre that is fast taking hold around the world, in that it combines the sub-genres of gothic country & bluegrass, dark blues, murderfolk and depression-era jazz. W.I.T.C.H. (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and spearheaded a new genre dubbed Zamrock, fusing influences that ranged from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath and James Brown and mixing them with traditional African rhythms and bush village songs. At t the peak of their popularity, the band often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Jagari - whose name is an Africanisation of Mick Jagger’s - riled up crowds by stage diving from balconies and dancing manically as the WITCH’s blend of psychedelic rock and African rhythms permeated the surrounding atmosphere. Jagari is the charismatic sole surviving original member of the band. As Zambia’s economy stagnated and the country buckled under the AIDS crisis, WITCH fell apart. Jagari retreated to a life of quasi-anonymity as a university music professor before being wrongfully arrested during Zambia’s toughest hour. Now a man in his 60s, he spends his time mining gemstones hoping to strike it rich, until very recently the band being just a nostalgic memory of his youth. Largely unknown outside of their home country, WITCH finally got the exposure they deserved when Now Again Records reissued their entire discography in 2012. This allowed Jagari to play outside Africa for the first time and for a new generation of fans to discover his music. Presented by The Piper. This is an 18+ event
