Mark and Lard

Mark and Lard

25 May 2026 - 26 May 2026

Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley in Carry on an Audience with Mark and Lard. Like the day Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon (if you were born then, if not, skip this bit) or when Alan Bradley got run over by a Blackpool tram on Coronation Street (ditto) – everybody can remember where they were on that fateful day in Radio 1 history. Listening to the radio. Obviously. Now, following high level negotiations after a chance meeting between Fat Harry White and Scoff Cruddle at a Bedford Rascal Enthusiasts rally, Mark and Marc have been coaxed back to wrestle once again on the sheepskin rug of light entertainment.
Mike Bubbins

Mike Bubbins

20 Sept 2026 - 17 Apr 2027

Mike Bubbins, star of hit podcast The Socially Distant Sports Bar, and of BBC television comedies Mammoth, Tourist Trap and The Unexplainers, unleashes Throwback, his first ever solo UK stand-up tour. And things may never be the same again. Throwback is a powerful, thought-provoking, visceral hour of stand-up comedy, that pushes boundaries, defies neat descriptions and challenges the audience... As if it is! It’s actually an hour and a half of really funny stories, pretty impressive characterisations, possibly a song (he said he’ll see how that goes), a bit of nostalgia about the good old days, a bit of optimism about the good new days, and Mike generally having a laugh about life and not taking himself, or anything else, too seriously. Having said that, he may, at some point in the show, get very annoyed at berks, whether in the past, the present, or the future. Very annoyed. So basically Throwback is a comedy show about Bubbins sharing, and bringing to life, the stuff that he finds funny. As comedy concepts go, it’s a pretty straightforward one, really.
Walter Trout and Dan Patlansky

Walter Trout and Dan Patlansky

2 Oct 2026 - 18 Oct 2026

Walter Trout's backstory is a page-turner you won't want to put down. Five decades in the making; it is equal parts thriller, romance, suspense and horror. There are musical fireworks, critical acclaim and fists-aloft triumph, offset by wilderness years and brushes with the jaws of narcotic oblivion. There are feted early stints as gunslinger in bands from John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to Canned Heat, and the solo career that’s still blazing a quarter-century later. The veteran bluesman has seen and done it all - plays earth shattering blues rock music. In only a little over a decade, Dan Patlansky has become one of the busiest and most respected blues artists to ever come out of South Africa. After his debut album which garnered Dan a reputation as a Blues-phenomenon, and his subsequent “Readers Choice” vote as “Best Blues Guitarist in Southern Africa”, Dan’s second album was released by EMI on the famed Blue Note label. Dan is one of the only South Africans to ever achieve “Blue Note” status and one of only six Fender endorsed guitarists in South Africa. Dan Patlansky, #1 Blues Rock Album 2016 by Blues Rock Review.

Imagine marrying the 21st century party vibe of Miley Cyrus or the minimalist angst of Radiohead with the crackly warmth of a vintage 78 or the plunger-muted barrelhouse howl of a forgotten Kansas City jazzman. Bradlee's choice of material ranges from the '80s hard rock of Guns N' Roses to hits as recent as Taylor Swift's controversial "Look What You Made Me Do." They're rendered by a rotating cast of musicians and singers in fashions that date back to a time when Axl, Slash and T-Swift's parents had yet to be born - a time of street corner harmonies and torch singers, blues belters and golden-voiced crooners.

Bill Callahan

Bill Callahan

30 Sept 2026 - 6 Oct 2026

Building on the lo-fi, sparse aesthetic of his early work as Smog toward the lush instrumentation and masterly command of structure (and beautiful production) evidenced on his latest records, Bill Callahan has released consistently excellent albums for two decades. He can safely be spoken of as one of America’s great songwriters. His songs have been covered by Gil Scott Heron, Cat Power and the Flaming Lips, and featured in films such as 'High Fidelity'. Emotive and beautifully arranged, 2009’s “Sometimes I wish we were an Eagle” is a great gateway to Bill. It’s fair to say that the snare sound here is exquisite! Before starting to release music under his own name in 2007, Bill Callahan recorded as Smog. Sample lyric: “My foolish heart had to go diving… diving, diving into the murk”…

Foy Vance

Foy Vance

17 Oct 2026 - 25 Oct 2026

Usual tags such as ‘singer-songwriter', ‘folk-soul', ‘troubadour' are perceived with a considerable amount of cynicism these days, especially since the music scene has been saturated with middle of the road artists, marketed as such by traditional record label formulae. Someone with a discerning ear and trust in their own taste should be able to spot who's the real deal and who's not. Leaving tags aside, Foy Vance operates in his own parallel universe. His music is an evolving journey, a constant search for artistic expression captured in the moment, operating well away from industry standards. Surely you'll hear echoes of Otis Redding, Richie Havens, Tom Waits and Van Morrison in Foy's music, legends he's already being compared to and definite influences. An ever so modest Foy will laugh at these comparisons, but then again that's what makes him so special. With his distinctive, cracked, soulful voice and a skill to write profound storytelling songs, Foy Vance belongs to a calibre of artists that stand the test of time, irrespective of trends or fads, delivering heartfelt songs about the human condition that everyone can relate to.

Horse McDonald

Horse McDonald

13 Nov 2026 - 20 Nov 2026

Horse makes an exciting return with the 30th year anniversary celebrations of the first Horse album The Same Sky. This is a rare chance to share and relive memories from the evocative and formative first Horse album. In March 1989, the first single You Could Be Forgiven was released. It was so different from anything else – and with thrilling first plays on Radio 1, this track absolutely set the bar. The first major UK tour followed. In 1990 the album followed and tours across Europe opening for artists such as Tina Turner and BB King. The standout song from this album and arguably, of any of her albums, is Careful, a beautiful and timeless song, which will forever be her My Way. A special night which will inevitably conjure up treasured times from over the years for her entire audience. It’s the full band show, playing the album in its entirety with B-sides and a best of the rest – a set choc-full of classic songs. A very special evening indeed.

Rising Stars of Voice with Louise Alder
Rising and established talents join forces for an exceptional recital of vocal music, including Johannes Brahms’s dramatic Neue Liebeslieder. Our Rising Stars programme invites outstanding up-and-coming performers to The Queen’s Hall stage. They perform alongside their internationally acclaimed mentors, soprano Louise Alder and pianist James Baillieu. The new recruits for 2026 curate and perform the repertoire for the first half of the concert. After the interval they are joined by Louise Alder, following her performance in opera in concert Don Giovanni at the Usher Hall. Alder has been described by The Times as having ‘such a glorious bloom on her soprano voice that you’d think she could simply sing open the gates of heaven’. Together, they perform Johannes Brahms’s full-blooded Neue Liebeslieder (New Love Songs). Composed in 1874 for a mix of solo voices and vocal ensemble with piano, this set of waltzes depicts a series of highly dramatic scenarios - from stormy seas, to thwarted love and failed bewitchments - all in Brahms’s lush, opulent vocal style. Don’t miss this chance to discover classical music’s future luminaries. Supported by David and Brenda Lamb and Finlay and Lynn Williamson
Pavel Haas Quartet

Pavel Haas Quartet

28 Aug 2026 - 28 Aug 2026

Europe meets the US in a celebration of the string quartet, with music from Dvořák, Korngold and Martinů. The Czech Pavel Haas Quartet bring their characteristic joie de vivre to three engaging quartets, by composers who reached across the Atlantic to explore new musical avenues. Bohuslav Martinů’s Third Quartet is a fascinating exploration of texture, with its spiky opening movement and its bluesy central Andante. The finale is an absolute riot of speed and virtuosity. Before he headed for Hollywood and a much-garlanded career as a film composer, Erich Korngold was a busy and successful composer in his native Austria. He wrote his Second String Quartet shortly before he left for the US. While it charms and dances, it also disconcerts with some dissonant, sharp edges. Antonín Dvořák’s quartets from the 1890s are some of his most flamboyantly tuneful chamber works. His ‘American’ quartet is infused with folk melodies from his three-year stay in the United States. Supported by Tanya and David Parker
Death of Gesualdo

Death of Gesualdo

15 Aug 2026 - 15 Aug 2026

Outstanding vocal ensemble The Gesualdo Six explores the chilling music and life story of composer Carlo Gesualdo in a multi-media concert piece. What do we do with the art of monstrous people? The 16th-century composer Carlo Gesualdo is infamous for murdering his wife and her lover, while also being remembered for his dissonant musical language. Director Bill Barclay has chosen some of Gesualdo’s darkest music, including Tenebrae (a mass for the composer’s own death), to create a fascinating but chilling portrait of the composer. The Gesualdo Six sing with ‘precision, pure tone and nuanced expression’ (The Guardian), joined by six actor-dancers to further illustrate the music through Renaissance iconography, puppetry and sinister tableaux vivants. Death of Gesualdo contrasts beauty and monstrosity in a completely unique experience. According to a recent five-star review, 'the staging, the singing and acting are sublime' (The Times). While the pristine sounds of this concert can be enjoyed throughout the hall, please note that side seats will have less direct views of some of the theatrical elements. Any seats where we anticipate a partially restricted view are indicated on the seating plan. Performed in Italian with English surtitles
Gringolts Quartet

Gringolts Quartet

24 Aug 2026 - 24 Aug 2026

Franz Schubert’s final quartet is interwoven with music by György Kurtág, celebrating his centenary. Acclaimed for their ‘beautifully integrated sound’ (The Herald), the musicians of the Gringolts Quartet create a lively dialogue between compositions from different eras. Their Festival recital celebrates György Kurtág’s centenary by interweaving three of his exquisitely crafted compositions with the final quartet of one of his heroes, Franz Schubert. Kurtág’s elegiac Officium breve in memoriam Andreae Szervánszky pays tribute to a compatriot and fellow composer. Considered among his finest creations, it deftly combines original music with arrangements of pieces by Endre Szervánszky and Anton Webern. Also on the programme are the delicately textured Hommage à Jacob Obrecht and the emotionally intense Microludes - each lasting under two minutes. One of Kurtág’s heroes, Franz Schubert composed his String Quartet No. 15 in G in 1826, two years before his death. Its harmonic adventurousness, heroic scale, melodic beauty and dramatic range of moods make it one of the most engaging of his chamber works.
Jason Max Ferdinand Singers

Jason Max Ferdinand Singers

10 Aug 2026 - 10 Aug 2026

Start your day with a stunning programme of spirituals, folk songs and hymns. Conductor and composer Jason Max Ferdinand formed his choir to champion Black excellence through an eclectic range of choral literature. Founded during the pandemic, the Jason Max Ferdinand Singers have fast gained international renown for their ‘bold, impassioned sound’ (The Guardian). Following their Festival debut in All Rise, they present a wide-ranging and emotionally potent programme in this more intimate performance. At its heart are inventive arrangements of traditional spirituals, songs and hymns. These include John Stoddart’s dramatic choral rhapsody on Soon I Will Be Done, Donald Dillard’s energetic take on the spiritual Didn’t It Rain, Norman Luboff’s tender arrangement of the Welsh hymn All Through the Night, and Cedric Dent’s exultant version of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands - complete with quotations from Handel’s ‘Hallelujah Chorus’. Other items include stirring choruses by Richard Wagner and Ludwig van Beethoven, soulful contemporary compositions by Jacob Collier, James Mulholland and Jason Max and Meka Ferdinand’s celebration of the birth of their youngest child. Vilde Frang & Friends

Vilde Frang & Friends

22 Aug 2026 - 22 Aug 2026

Violinist Vilde Frang leads a superb ensemble of classical and folk musicians in a programme of works inspired by Hungarian traditional music Join these first-class musicians led by the ‘powerful and dynamic’ (BBC Music Magazine) violinist Vilde Frang, celebrating music from Béla Bartók alongside various folk songs and dances. Her fellow performers include Benjamin and Salamon Eredics from award-winning Hungarian folk band Söndorgő - described by Songlines Magazine as ‘one of Europe’s most versatile and exciting bands’. Béla Bartók wrote his tumultuous First Violin Sonata for Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi. It was rapturously received at its 1922 London premiere - with the composer at the keyboard. The soulful slow movement is especially beautiful, while the dance-infused finale is thrillingly virtuosic. Also on the programme is an exciting array of folk music hailing from Hungary, Bulgaria and the Balkans, from inventive arrangements by Bartók to dynamic contemporary compositions that offer a perfect blend of innovation and tradition. Supported by Donald and Louise MacDonald
Dunedin Consort

Dunedin Consort

8 Aug 2026 - 8 Aug 2026

The acclaimed Baroque ensemble performs International Festival co-commission, Passion of Mary Magdalene by Tansy Davies. Drawing on non-canonical gospels, ancient texts and poetry by Ruth Fainlight, this fascinating new work by Tansy Davies brings a fresh perspective to historically repressed voices. BBC Radio 3’s Kate Molleson has described Davies as a composer who ‘connects with body, spirituality and political convictions’. This bracing approach to both musical language and subject matter shapes her new dramatic work. An Edinburgh International Festival co-commission with the Barbican, Passion of Mary Magdelene was written specially for Dunedin Consort. It reimagines the story of the Passion of Christ, casting Mary as a complex spiritual leader and filtering the musical style of the Baroque through Davies’s thoroughly modern idiom. Baroque specialist John Butt conducts the ensemble, known for ‘ebullient flourishes of melody and technique’ (The Times). Singing the title role, soprano Anna Dennis is an award-winning singer noted for her serene and intuitive performances of both Baroque and modern music. Sung in English with surtitles
Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Pierre-Laurent Aimard

26 Aug 2026 - 26 Aug 2026

Pierre-Laurent Aimard honours the late Alfred Brendel, his regular musical partner, with a characteristically imaginative programme. Pierre-Laurent Aimard - ‘one of the most essential keyboard advocates of our era’ (The Guardian) - enjoyed a close professional partnership and friendship with pianist and composer Alfred Brendel. In the third of our Brendel tribute recitals, he offers a characteristically imaginative programme of works close to both their hearts. Brendel had a particular fondness for Franz Schubert. Aimard performs some of Schubert’s shorter lyrical works alongside finely crafted miniatures by his own long-term collaborator György Kurtág - himself a Schubert devotee. Aimard has also chosen a selection of Ludwig van Beethoven’s alternately witty and tender Bagatelles - another Brendel favourite. He juxtaposes them with a work by the composer who dubbed Aimard ‘the best pianist for me’ (The New York Times): György Ligeti’s inventive and virtuosic Musica ricercata. In Aimard's recent performance of works by Kurtág and Ligeti, The Telegraph described Brendel’s spirit as ‘smiling down on us’.
Paul Lewis

Paul Lewis

20 Aug 2026 - 20 Aug 2026

Pianist Paul Lewis pays tribute to his teacher and mentor, Alfred Brendel, in a recital of classical and early Romantic works. Alfred Brendel was a much-loved performer at the Edinburgh International Festival for 40 years. His former student, Paul Lewis, reflects Brendel’s influence through his ‘unshowy, deeply considered interpretations,’ (The Times). Now a leading pianist of his generation, Lewis has described Brendel as an ‘endless source of inspiration’. Brendel had a particular affinity with Mozart, whom he termed ‘one of the most sensuous composers ever’ (The New Yorker). Fittingly, Lewis includes two Mozart sonatas in his programme. K333 is full of songlike charm and high spirits, while K570 anticipates the composer’s great final opera The Magic Flute in its mixture of wit and profundity. Lewis has also chosen Carl Maria von Weber’s sunny and expansive Sonata in A flat - which Brendel essentially rediscovered - and three miniature masterpieces by Frédéric Chopin - his heartfelt Nocturnes and impassioned Polonaise.
Sean Shibe

Sean Shibe

13 Aug 2026 - 13 Aug 2026

The Scottish guitarist’s Festival debut explores Spanish and British music across five centuries. Sean Shibe’s recitals have become known for their startling originality: part concerts, part musical happenings. Described by The Guardian as a ‘truly compelling performer’, the multi-faceted Scottish guitarist frequently engages in a lively dialogue between past and present. This programme of Spanish and British music from across five centuries is no exception. The Renaissance is represented by the graceful fantasias and preludes of Alonso Mudarra, and the sweet melancholy of Shibe’s go-to composer, John Dowland. Joaquín Rodrigo ushers us gently into the 20th century with his exquisitely written Tres piezas españolas (Three Spanish Pieces). The contemporary composers in the programme take their lead from their forbears. Francisco Coll’s new work Sefarad draws on Sephardic folk music, while Thomas Adès’s restless Forgotten Dances suggests music heard long ago, not just rediscovered but reimagined. Supported by Margaret Duffy and Peter Williamson
Julie Roset & Susan Manoff

Julie Roset & Susan Manoff

27 Aug 2026 - 27 Aug 2026

Experience an inspired selection of songs from the French Belle Époque and beyond, sung by one of today’s most vibrant sopranos. Soprano Julie Roset and pianist Susan Manoff perform a passionate and elegant tribute to the art of French mélodies (art songs), drawing on over a century of song and solo piano repertoire. Dreams, queens, and mythical figures populate poetic songs from both established composers and intriguing lesser-known figures. Enjoy music by Claude Debussy and Reynaldo Hahn, writing at the height of the French Belle Époque. Discover the immaculate musicianship of their contemporaries Manuel Rosenthal and Mel Bonis, a prolific composer who chose to disguise her gender when her music was eventually published. Roset’s ‘pure, fresh and youthful voice’ (Scherzo) is ideally suited to exquisite songs by contemporary composer Isabelle Aboulker. At the heart of this programme, Je t’aime is a stunning burst of virtuosity - and a declaration of undying love. Sung in French with English surtitles
Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker
Players from the Berliner Philharmoniker perform an elegant and intimate programme of 19th- and 20th-century chamber works. As part of their International Festival residency, players from the Berliner Philharmoniker perform a delightful programme of chamber works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Piano, strings, clarinet and horn join forces for a memorable close of The Queen’s Hall series. Czech composer Zdeněk Fibich added the rich sonorities of clarinet and horn to the traditional piano trio for his warmly lyrical Quintet in D, inspired by his love for librettist and critic Anežka Schulzová. Johannes Brahms’s soulful trio is one of his ‘autumnal’ late works, which masterfully intertwines the voices of clarinet, piano and cello. Finally, Ernst von Dohnányi’s colourful sextet was composed for the unusual combination of piano, violin, viola, cello, clarinet and horn. It was written in 1935 when the composer was bedridden with illness, circumstances which make its zest, energy and swagger seem even more astonishing. In Memory of Peter Diamand
Venice Baroque Orchestra & Andrea Marcon
Celebrate the beauty of Baroque orchestral music with the Venice Baroque Orchestra and its founder-director Andrea Marcon. Now in its 29th year, the Venice Baroque Ensemble is known for its ‘vivid, strongly etched performances that often reach fiery intensity’ (Gramophone). Performing on period instruments, the orchestra has won praise for its seminal recordings of music by Antonio Vivaldi. This concert highlights the variety of Vivaldi’s virtuoso works for soloists and orchestra, from the soulfulness of the Concerto for Two Cellos to the flamboyant high spirits of the Flute Concerto. Works by two of Vivaldi’s distinguished London-based contemporaries are also on the programme. Francesco Geminiani’s lively Concerto grosso is based on a famous dance tune, while George Frideric Handel’s is full of grace and charm. Supported by the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh
Scottish Ensemble & Brìghde Chaimbeul
Smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul and the genre-crossing Scottish Ensemble explore Celtic music and mythology. Brìghde Chaimbeul (pronounced Breech-huh Campbell) has set the world of Celtic music alight. She pairs mastery of the Scottish smallpipes with a creative, forward-looking approach to the Scottish Gaelic music tradition that has gained her a devoted international fanbase. Chaimbeul joins forces with Scottish Ensemble, a group of string players renowned for their ambitious cross-genre collaborations. Stunning visuals are provided by filmmaker Jonny Ashworth, one of the creators of Brìghde’s haunting and memorable music videos. Together, their performance blends new and traditional tunes, electronic sound and bewitching footage of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. It's an exploration of Celtic mythology and storytelling, music emerging from a deep, earthy soundscape of heavy drones. If you’re new to the distinctive sound of the smallpipes, there’s no better place to start. Produced by Scottish Ensemble. Co-commissioned by Edinburgh International Festival and Eden Court, with support from PRS Foundation's Beyond Borders, the Leche Trust and the Cockaigne Fund, administered by Foundation Scotland.
Lawrence Brownlee & Iain Burnside

Lawrence Brownlee & Iain Burnside

12 Aug 2026 - 12 Aug 2026

American tenor Lawrence Brownlee and Scottish pianist Iain Burnside reunite for a fascinating recital of Italian and American songs. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee has won international acclaim for his ‘sweet tone, fastidious pitch and poetic phrasing’ (New Yorker). He returns to the Festival with Scottish pianist and broadcaster Iain Burnside, following their 2019 Queen’s Hall recital, after which ‘no one left the hall without a smile on their face’, according to The Arts Desk. In the Italian-themed first half, enjoy lyrical love songs by Gaetano Donizetti and Ottorino Respighi, romantic numbers by popular songwriters Luigi Denza and Gabriele Sibella, and Franz Liszt’s impassioned Tre sonetti di Petrarca (Three Petrarch Sonnets), inspired by the composer’s travels in Italy. Brownlee then turns his focus to American music. Dominick Argento’s tuneful tributes to Tudor poetry pave the way for songs from Genuis Child, Ricky Ian Gordon’s moving setting of poems by Langston Hughes. The concert concludes with songs from Brownlee’s own Rising project, in which he has commissioned leading Black American composers to set powerful poetry from the Harlem Renaissance. Supported by Richard Parry Sung in English and Italian with English surtitles
Steven Osborne

Steven Osborne

17 Aug 2026 - 17 Aug 2026

Steven Osborne performs works by Alfred Brendel’s beloved Schubert, alongside contemporary gems from Scottish composers James MacMillan and Judith Weir Steven Osborne has described Alfred Brendel’s recordings as ‘one of the formative influences of my childhood’. In this tribute to the great pianist, Osborne - acclaimed for his ‘musical intelligence and reflective grace’ (The Herald) - pairs late works by Brendel’s beloved Franz Schubert with short contemporary compositions. Schubert’s Piano Sonata in C minor, D958, is among several masterpieces written in the final months of his life. This highly dramatic piece closes with a wild, dance-like finale. Osborne also performs Schubert’s luminous Four Impromptus, songs from Schubert’s final collection, Schwanengesang (Swan Song), and an unfinished Allegretto that Osborne has himself completed. Bookending these expansive works are James MacMillan’s playful Lumen Christi, inspired by an Easter chant, and Judith Weir’s affectionate tribute to her composer friend Steven Stucky, Chorale, for Steve. Supported by an anonymous donor
Maxim Emelyanychev & SCO Wind Soloists
Enjoy a programme of 20th-century French chamber music. Wind soloists from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra explore music from Poulenc, Ravel and Françaix, with their conductor Maxim Emelyanychev on piano. Francis Poulenc’s chamber music is a beguiling mix of lyrical and frenetic, sombre and playful. Written the year before he died, the sonatas for oboe and clarinet take an occasionally melancholic look back at his musical life, quoting from both early and more recent works. The famous Flute Sonata retains its power to charm, yet is infused with memories of a lost loved one. In contrast, the much earlier Sextet bursts out of the blocks with astonishing, effervescent energy. Dazzling piano music from Maurice Ravel and Jean Françaix’s bustling ‘Musique de Brasserie’ - a vivid portrait of a busy Parisian restaurant - add to this enthralling, colourful, and thoroughly French concert.
Kleio Quartet, Makoto Ozone & Sheku Kanneh-Mason
Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and pianist Makoto Ozone join the Kleio Quartet for this unusual programme. The Kleio Quartet - BBC New Generation Artists and winners of the 2023 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition - made an ecstatically received Festival debut in 2024. Now the ensemble joins forces with star cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and genre-defying pianist Makoto Ozone to perform two great quintets. Franz Schubert’s String Quintet is one of the pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire. Completed just weeks before his death, it contains a world of emotions, from agitation to exuberance to serenity. Its poignant slow movement is especially beautiful. It is paired here with Béla Bartók’s rarely performed Piano Quintet. This early masterpiece blends the luscious melodies and textures of late Romanticism with elements of Hungarian folk music - especially in the rhapsodic finale. Supported by Niall and Carol Lothian
