John Power had the best rock’n’roll apprenticeship ever – playing bass as an 18-year-old in The La’s. Looking For Ghosts

Mysterious footsteps coming from the stage, A black mass in the stalls, Doors which open and close as somebody unseen walks through and the piano music caught on a recording while no pianos were being played are just some of the ghostly accounts of this spectacular Victorian theatre. The Royal Hippodrome Theatre opened on Thursday 2 August 1883. At the time Eastbourne was emerging as a highly fashionable destination, encouraged by regular visits from the Prince of Wales. Its original name Theatre Royal and Opera House survived for about 20 years but from around 1904 it became The Royal Hippodrome Theatre. The reason for the name change is unclear, but it seems to mirror a change in style and use. We will be in search of confirmation of the ghosts that haunt The Royal Hippodrome. In small teams the mission will be to collect evidence using traditional methods such as sance, glass moving etc right up to the latest ghost equipment using infrared, electro magnetics and so on. No experiment is compulsory as we do our best to identify who the ghosts of The Royal Hippodrome are and why they haunt this location. The cost for the night is 55 per head, 8.20pm for an 8.30pm start. The night will finish at 1.30am, by which time you will have had the chance to experience what it is like to be a paranormal investigator, and had the opportunity to try a mixture of traditional techniques as well as modern technology to try to decide for yourselves WHO HAUNTS The Royal Hippodrome?

Osibisa’s inspirational sound could only have developed in the hothouse of London. 50 years on it's time to celebrate this cornerstone of black British pop history. Osibisa are developing a special show to celebrate their most significant work with special guests including Blo, who supported them on their first tour of Nigeria, alongside others special guests who will join the band. During the late 60s and early 70s Osibisa were unique, taking an African message to the mainstream rock crowd. In the 1970s the importance of Osibisa became international, they were the talismans for African musicians looking to use their own African culture and harness the sensibility and commercial worlds of European markets. This was because their West African polyrhythms and melodies were not sacrificed to the constraints of a rock aesthetic. African clothes were proudly worn and not assimilated. The musicians were muti-instumentalists able to perform complex traditional percussion work-outs as well as deftly play electric instruments. Their live shows crossed over, bringing African culture to a white crowd, who were the regulars at rock venues like The Marquee where Osibisa often played. These bold moves brought Osibisa a growing reputation at home and their impact back in Africa was profound.

This year sees The Trapdoor Theatre School celebrate 20 years of theatre training for children of all ages in Eastbourne. From humble beginnings with a class of just 16 students, Trapdoor has grown into a hugely popular, happy place for youngsters to develop their creativity and performance skills, whilst making life long friendships and having the best time together! 20 years on and the school is thriving and plays host to over 130 students each week aged 3-18 ! Our celebratory show includes some of our favourite Trapdoor moments over the years and special performances from our youngest Teenies right through to our oldest students and alumni.
