Our Introduction to Navigation course is your key to getting started in countryside and moorland walking. No experience of hill walking required to attend this Introductory course because the content of the course is aimed at beginners. This days course is aimed at creating an interest in navigation and to give you more confidence to explore other areas on your own. You will learn and practice some useful navigational techniques, including map and compass work, in an informal and relaxed environment. You will cover up to 5 miles with plenty of opportunity for questions and answers. Maps and compass will be supplied. If you do have some experience of hill walking but are not confident about planning walks, navigating and understanding the equipment required, then this introductory course is an ideal way to learn. This event is deal for anyone following the NNAS programme as an introduction. Look out for out for Bronze and Silver Award training events in the future. Please dress for changeable weather. It is essential you bring a packed lunch, snack and plenty of fluids for the event. Having the right clothing and equipment can quite literally be a lifesaver if conditions are really bad, but even in less extreme weather, it can mean the difference between having an enjoyable or a miserable day out in the hills. Walk to Wellbeing - Hadrians Wall East of The Sill
Our Walk to Wellbeing Programme is the easy way to get out and get healthy in Northumberland National Park. West Tynedale Health Walk Leaders and National Park volunteers have designed and are leading walks suitable for people wanting an easy introduction to the inspirational landscapes of Northumberland National Park. This is a walk which unashamedly cherry-picks some of the most iconic parts of Hadrians Wall and the National Trail. It includes the only section where walking on top of the Wall is still allowed. Well meet at The Sill before taking the AD122 bus to Housesteads Roman Fort, perhaps the most photographed fort on the Wall, where the walk will start. Well walk back to our starting point at The Sill. On the way, we pass Roman milecastles, crags and of course Sycamore Gap to see the new signs of life emerging from the base of the tree. This is a walk steeped in historic and scenic importance. Throughout the walk there are wide views across the Tyne Valley and into barbarian lands to the north. Once back at The Sill there will be time for an exploration of the landscape, any temporary exhibition and even a cuppa. Distance:.3.5 miles. Terrain:The walk follows a National Trail. It is a good footpath over open ground. There are a few short sections of steps and one longer descent approaching Sycamore Gap which is locally moderately steep. Much of the walk is exposed if there is rain. Meeting place/walk start point: Meet at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre to catch the 10:22 bus to Housesteads where the walk will start. An informative circular walk along and to the north of Hadrians Wall. We will explore the landscape and history and the rocks which underpin it all. The event will start with a presentation in The Sill on the rocks and geological history of the area and how they have influenced the landscape. We will then take our walk and see at first hand the rocks themselves and understand how they and geological processes have shaped the terrain. The walk, which involves some quite steep (though short) stepped ascents and descents, will provide opportunity to understand how different environments and changing climates in the past have moulded our region, as well as offering majestic views of the local countryside and The Wall. Hand Embroidered Landscapes Workshop
Create your own stunning hand embroidered landscape. Learn how to select, layer and piece fabrics together to create the background for your chosen landscape. Details are built up using a range of hand embroidery stitches, embellishments and a variety of threads. By the end of the workshop, youll have created your own landscape to frame or use for various projects. If you have a particular landscape you would like to recreate, please bring an image with you. This can be on a phone or other device or printed. Suitable for people of all levels of embroidery experience, from complete beginners to the more accomplished embroiderer. Learn the traditional, sustainable technique of hooky mat making. During the workshop, you will learn the history, the different rag-rug techniques and try your hand at hooky mat making. As part of the workshop, you will be shown how to design and make your own small hooky mat, inspired by local farming, agriculture and landscape. You will be able to begin your mat to take away and will be provided with your own 'hook' to keep, hessian and other materials. Walk to Wellbeing: Greenlee Lough Boardwalk
Our Walk to Wellbeing Programme is an easy way to get out and get healthy in Northumberland National Park. West Tynedale Health Walk Leaders design and lead walks that are suitable for people wanting an easy introduction to the inspirational landscapes of the Northumberland National Park. This guided walk will take you around our wetland boardwalk at Greenlee Lough. Leaving Gibbs Hill Farm, the route follows the bridleway, heading towards Greenlee Farm. The walk then goes off right onto the boardwalks, where rare and wonderful fauna and insects are to be found (including stunning reed beds). The route continues along the boardwalk to Greenlee Lough, where we can visit the hide next to the Lough. Here, we can view the birds on the water, so binoculars would be a good idea to bring along. From there, we will walk up to Greenlee Farm and then follow the bridleway back to Gibbs Hill Farm. Distance: 3.85 miles Terrain: Good footpaths and bridleways, with a section of boardwalks. There are moderate ascents and descents and a couple of places where it is likely to be wet underfoot. In wet conditions the boardwalk can be slippery.
