Music at No.5 Presents : Sylvie Noble + Ursula Harrison Duo
Playing their original music, standard and contemporary jazz repertoire, and folk music; they combine deep, earthy grooves, light dancing melodies and powerful swing. Ursula and Sylvie incorporate intimate, explorative and fearless improvisation into all of their repertoire. First meeting on the vibrant South-Wales jazz scene, bassist Ursula Harrison and vocalist Sylvie Noble bonded over a shared love of both jazz and folk music. The two frequently performed in projects together, such as American folk band ‘A Wheel Inside A Wheel’ and as part of Llais Festival of Voice. Towards the end of a jam night in the Original Jazz Summer School 2022, the pair performed a spontaneous duet, a cover of Gillian Welch's Dark Turn of Mind. Stunning the audience and performers alike, it became clear that this format was one to pursue. Over the next few years, a tradition of weaving duet passages into other projects, experimenting with new textures for college projects and exploring standards in a duo setting developed into the current duo project. Ursula Harrison is a bass player and composer originally from Pontygwaith, South Wales. Winner of BBC Young Jazz Musician 2024, Harrison is currently studying the European Jazz Master’s programme based in Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Alongside playing her own material, Ursula has worked with a variety of large ensembles, recently performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, the JM Jazz World Orchestra in their tour of Italy, Croatia and Montenegro and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Jazz Collective with Michael Mayo in Bimhuis, Amsterdam. Frequently in demand as a session player, Ursula has performed with the likes of Huw Warren, Ant Law and Angharad Jenkins. Ursula graduated from Cardiff University in 2024 with BA Hons Mathematics and Music, studying with bassists Yuri Goloubev and Jim Vivian. Currently based in London, Sylvie is pursuing further jazz studies at the Royal Academy of Music, and is a fast-rising voice on the UK jazz vocal scene. Performing across the UK at established venues such as Pizza Express Soho and the Vortex, Sylvie combines fluent and experimental improvisation with evocative and soulful melodies, pushing the boundaries of genre. With influences such as Norma Winstone, Gillian Welch and Carla Bley, her sound is steeped in sensitive honesty and captivating storytelling.
