Chris Brain

Chris Brain

23 Apr 2026 - 27 May 2026

Chris Brain emerged out of Leeds’ vibrant folk scene in 2022 with his debut, critically acclaimed and widely distributed album, Bound to Rise, reaching Number 22 in the UK Folk Charts. His much-anticipated second album, Steady Away, moves inward and takes on a more self-reflective quality, whilst retaining glimmers of soaring figures and pastoral imagery. Brain’s distinctive warm vocal and finger-picked guitar style are sustained alongside expansive strings and delicate piano arrangements, taking shape through evolving and introspective impressions on tenderness, loss, pain and awe in nature. Glancing off The Nave’s eaved ceilings with natural reverb, Steady Away’s 11 tracks, recorded by Tom Orrell, capture the intimacy of Chris’ songwriting. Steady Away further embeds Chris Brain within the contemporary folk scene, whilst gesturing towards the folk tradition. His commitment to folk is only deepened by the two folk clubs and folk festival in Leeds that Chris founded and runs, attracting a wide range of audiences and musicians alike.
Quiet Night in: Kourosh Kanani & Matt Davies
Kourosh Kanani and Matt Davies are redefining the boundaries of contemporary music by weaving the rich traditions of Iran, India and Armenia into a modern jazz tapestry. Through Kourosh's virtuosic and polyrhythmic guitar work and Matt's innovative use of electronics and rethinking of the drum kit their duo creates a powerful dialogue between important ancient cultural legacies and cutting-edge soundscapes. Their music is both a tribute to the heritage of these diverse regions and a bold exploration of their modern relevance, offering audiences a mesmerising experience that transcends borders, time, and genre. It's a blend of tradition and innovation, rooted in jazz yet unbound by convention. Kourosh Kanani and Matt Davies made their debut release as a duo earlier this year with their take on a Kurdish lullaby Lay Laye featuring Amena, a multi-lingual singer and composer from Cairo, Egypt. A deeply evocative voice rooted in the traditions of the great Egyptian vocalists.

Also, we've kept the door price as low as we can, but rest assured that GTI is a non-profit event, and all the money after expenses goes to the performers. Barricane + Bellyful + Bloody Fiasco

Barricane + Bellyful + Bloody Fiasco

29 May 2026 - 29 May 2026

After a long planning period, we are happy to finally host goth-witch-folk outfit Barricane for Gappy Tooth's 24th birthday gig, who have top tunes and harmony vocals that are charming (both in the sense that they sound nice, and that they might turn you into a toad). Joining them are Bath/Bristol trip-hop outfit Bellyful, and Bloody Fiasco who will bring the dancefloor pop. See www.gappytooth.com for more info in the weeks leading up to the gig, or use the contact box on the site to ask any questions. Tara Clerkin Trio

The Loft

The Loft

7 May 2026 - 7 May 2026

The Loft, original Creation Records legends, set out on a UK tour in May 2026 in the wake of their rave-reviewed Top 20 album, Everything Changes, Everything Stays the Same, and a string of sold out dates, including touring with The Wedding Present, last year. This year the band aims to visit towns and cities across the UK that they didnt play last time, with a new album set to be released to coincide with the shows. The band heads out on tour, 41 years, almost to the day, since their classic Up The Hill And Down The Slope, topped the indie singles chart. Since their infamous onstage split at the Hammersmith Palais in 1985, their status as one of the UK's most influential guitar bands of the 80s continues to grow and to influence a host of younger artists. We played some fantastic sell out shows with brilliant audiences last year, but we just couldnt fit in gigs everywhere that wanted us to play, says guitarist, Andy Strickland, now, with even more new songs to play, plus our greatest hits, we cant wait to get back onstage. From what people told us last year, the band is sounding better than ever, and the new songs have kind of picked up where we left off all those years ago, so the set is a celebration of both old and new, adds singer Pete Astor. Were really very excited, and grateful, to be able to still do this.
Third House + Luna Rosa + Pasteboard Masks
An intense entry into the GTI annals, featuring a record launch from Third House, a heavy wired goth-punk trio featuring The Baron Of Bleak, Umair Chaudry (Silent Weapon), and friend of GTI Al Kenny. Also on the bill are Corby's twitchy epic rockers Luna Rosa, and the oddball art pop of new act Pasteboard Masks. See www.gappytooth.com for more info in the weeks leading up to the gig, or use the contact box on the site to ask any questions. Also, find us on Facebook and Instagram, should that tickle your digital fancy. DON'T BE AN ARSE Our gigs are often highly eclectic, so there might be a wide variety of punters in our little venue. My New Band Believe

My New Band Believe

28 Apr 2026 - 28 Oct 2026

Oh yeah, Divine Schism welcome My New Band Believe to Oxford for a workshop show. My New Band Believe, led by Cameron Picton, bassist and sometime frontman of black midi, with whom he practiced an explosive form of musical world-building, weaving complex storytelling through thrilling passages of controlled chaos. The moniker serves as an open invitation, a subtle nod to listeners willing to meet the music on its own terms, to reap the rewards of taking a flying leap into the dark. Picton leads his band so that each track forms, scatters and re-groups, the uplift of one song crashing head-long into the rush of another. Inspired by Bert Jansch's hypnotic, hard-driving guitar, Judee Sill's panoramic pop, and the terrifying possibility of dance music, My New Band Believe is both all-encompassing and constantly in flux.
Eric Chenaux

Eric Chenaux

29 Apr 2026 - 29 Apr 2026

Divine Schism welcome Eric Chenaux to Oxford after a number of years! Eric brings all sorts of contradictions into play in his music, which is nonetheless ultra-fluid: impeccable groove and disorienting arrhythmia, ghostly harmony and modal stubbornness, roughness and smoothness, Tin Pan Alley and Derek Bailey, refined sophistication and terminal laziness, romantic sentimentality and twisted humor
