A Introduction to Life Drawing

From Greek and Roman sculptors, through the Renaissance Masters and up to contemporary abstract and expressionist painters, working from life has always been a key part of art. Studying the human form helps our understanding of proportion, weight and balance. It teaches us to observe the relationships between light and shade, structure and shape key essentials for creating art in any media and any style. This life workshop is suitable for beginners and improvers who would like to explore a variety of approaches to drawing the figure, using charcoal and other drawing media to translate the shapes, tones and form of the human body onto paper. Tuition and guidance will be given by experienced North Yorkshire art tutor/artist Laraine Simpson who has enjoyed teaching life drawing for many years helping both beginners and professional artists. Working with an experienced life model the workshop will include: Introduction to basic proportions of the human figure Demonstration of visual measuring techniques that are useful in creating figure drawings. Experimenting with a number of techniques/approaches to develop figure drawings e.g. quick gestural drawings through to longer, more considered drawings. Some drawing media and paper will be provided, but do bring along any of your own drawing materials you would like to explore with help from the tutor.

Friday 30th May 2025, 9am - 1pm 'Lines on Lino' - Printmaker Sally from Ashford Cottage Design will lead this lino cutting print workshop. You will learn how to explore mark making and then cut, and print, your lino cut design. This is suitable for beginners or anyone who enjoys this beautiful process and wishes to have a lovely morning playing with textures and making a small print. Depending on experience in the technique, you will have time to make one simple, or one more complex lino print during the workshop. Sally will guide you through each stage of the process and provide designs or ideas for a print which you can use as a starting point or adapt, or design your own. Bring along any locally foraged treasures or images that you want to work with to form the basis of your artwork which will form a postcard sized print . Wear something suitable or bring an apron for the printmaking as ink will be used. If you have your own lino tools please bring them along, but all materials are provided if necessary. Sunday 29th June 2025, 10am - 1pm This workshop is a fun, interactive introduction to aromatherapy for physical and emotional wellbeing during summertime. Anne will take you through exploring 8 essential oils that she has selected as being particularly useful during summertime: - to nurture sunburnt skin - insect repellents - for digestive upsets that can happen on holidays - to help us swtich off, relax, and sleep - antiseptic first aid oils, and those for muscular aches and pains when we do activities we don't normally - essential oils for travelling. The workshop is suitable for all levels, from complete beginners to those who use essential oils regularly and want to expand their knowledge. Vital information on using essentail oils safely (including with children), different methods of use, and the most effective use for particular outcomes will all be covered. Practical information will be given on creating your own blends, using correct quantities, purchasing and storing your essential oils. You will create two of your own blends to take home and use. All materials are provided, but please bring a notepad and pen to jot down your findings. Mixed Media and Much More - Walton Group of Artists
Walton Group of Artists meets every Tuesday near Wetherby and holds an annual exhibition in November each year. Group members love supporting and encouraging each other and are excited to be exhibiting for the second time at The Station. The artists use a real mix of mediums, from textile, pencil, acrylic, oil, collage, watercolour, fused glass and ceramics, but generally just love trying anything. Friday 6th - Tuesday 17th June 2025 On 27 September 1825 a small steam locomotive named Locomotion No.1 coupled up to a passenger train at Shildon in County Durham. There were officially 300 ticket holders, but many more jumped aboard for the momentous journey. As the train made its way eastward toward the port of Stockton, crowds of spectators gathered along the route, eager to witness this historic event of the first steam-powered passenger train on a public railway. Few of them could have imagined how far-reaching this 26-mile journey would be, with this revolution of transportation having a such an impact on the world for the next 200 years and beyond. Join us in celebrating the people, places, and perspectives of the railway with this exhibition of creative works by eight local artists and primary school children.

An exhibition featuring a selection of the artists' best works to date Vicky Tucker is a North Yorkshire artist renowned for her hyper- realistic animal portraiture. Vicky excels at capturing the essence of her subject with incredible fine detail. She has collectors of her work worldwide. A keen conservationist, Vicky is determined to effect positive change with her work. Regularly donating a percentage of sales form key pieces to charities Explorers Against Extinction and Skydog Sanctuary enables Vicky to make a difference. ‘Selective’ showcases many of Vicky’s best works to date. Charles Parry is a North Yorkshire based artist, his beautiful landscape and sea-scape paintings capture mood and light brilliantly. Following an accident that put Charles in hospital for some 3 years he left the Liverpool School of Art. His beautiful work was spotted and submitted to the Welsh Eisteddfod, from this he was offered a job. A long career ensued working in agencies and exhibiting work at many galleries around the country, whilst working in marketing. Retired now, Charles continues his love of painting with views inspired by his love of the natural world, in particular North Yorkshire and the Lake District.

An exhibition of Oil Paintings inspired by the Rivers and Reservoirs in the Yorkshire Dales This exhibition takes you on a journey around the Yorkshire Dales, following in the footsteps of Sarah and her dog Dotty. Collecting sketches to work on later in the studio, she takes you through some of her favourite dales, drawing iconic views and lesser known hidden gems in Nidderdale, Swaledale and Wharfdale. The resulting work is a mixture of loose sketchbook style watercolours and mixed media oils.

A joint exhibition of paintings, Chigiri-e and photography inspired by the artists' two favourite places Jill has worked for over 30 years teaching arts around the country, as well as in Spain and The Shetland Islands. The overall feel of Jill's work is nature, with a Japanese twist. Working with watercolours, recycled glass and hand made papers from kyoto she produces original, affordable pieces of work. Andrew has been a photographer for many years now and had in the past been called the sheep whisperer. Living amongst nature gives him daily inspiration.

An exhibition of coloured pencil drawings inspired by animals, nature and the human form Heather is largely self taught, but joined the Bonny Snowdon Academy to further her skills, enabling her to create realism in her portraits. Her love of using high grade coloured pencils for her work stems from her draughting career which required dexterity and precision. Inspired by her fondness for animals she has created many private commissions of family pets. She is a member of the Association of Animal Artists.

Jolly Melodies music classes, formerly known as Music with Mummy are a structured programme of weekly classes for pre-school children aged four and under. Its main aim is to teach basic aspects of music to young children, while having fun! The material has been specially composed to gently direct these very young children towards our clearly defined objectives. Journal - Fabric Sculpting Workshop

Join artist, Abigail Lagden, to create you own fabric sculpted journal design. You will learn all the basic fabric sculpting techniques, and will use fabrics, embellishments and a fabric hardener to decorate the cover of an A5 hard-backed journal, creating stunning textures and designs. Once your project has been dried you will use a dry brushing technique to really enhance the fabric texture and surface detail, using colour and shading. The exact design will be up to you and your imagination, but examples will be available for inspiration and design guidance. All materials will be provided and your journal will be ready to take home with you at the end of the session. No experience is necessary just bring your imagination. An apron and gloves will be provided, however, please wear old clothes that you don't mind getting messy. This is a workshop for adults, but is suitable for age 12+ too.
W1: A Linear Walk From Castle Bolton To Richmond Castle
Leave Station car park 9.15am. We will transfer to Castle Bolton by private bus for a 10am start. The charge for the bus is included in the ticket price. 15 miles. Hard. 12 Following the success of this walk in 2021, we are bringing it back for 2025. The walk links two noble castles situated in neighbouring dales. A bus will take us to the imposing Bolton Castle where we head up onto open moorland that once rang with the sounds of lead mining but today the cry of lapwings, curlew and grouse greet us. As we descend into Swaledale we enjoy splendid views of Reeth nestling under Calver Hill. We take the Coast-to-Coast route, now designated as a National Trail, back to Richmond following the River Swale as it flows through meadows and woods, past a priory and smelt mill to our destination of Richmond Castle. Expect to return to Richmond around 5.30pm.
W3: Great Shunner Fell, The Buttertubs And Lovely Seat
Leave Station car park at 9.00am. Start at Hardraw Village (GR: SD 867 912, What3Words: ///seatbelt.crackling.search ) at 10am. 13 Miles, 2,064 of climb. Hard. 7. Iconic Great Shunner Fell stands at 716 metres above Wensleydale and Swaledale. We use the Pennine Way all the way up from Hardraw and admire the views opening up behind us. A short descent takes us to Little Shunner Fell just a rise in the landscape. We descend down the old Coal Miners track and a short walk down the road leads us to the spectacular Buttertubs. From here we make the short sharp ascent to Lovely Seat. After posing for photos on the seat we descend back to the road and on to Hardraw with its famous waterfall.
W20: A Nature Discovery Walk At Nosterfield
Leave Station car park at 9.45am. Rendezvous at Nosterfield Nature Reserve car park (GR: SE 279 795, What3Words: ///divides.commenced.voltage) at 10.30am. An easy nature walk of around 5 Miles. 7 Following an early sell out in 2023 and 2024, we are repeating this Discovery Walk at the National Nature Reserve at Nosterfield and the nearby reserve at Nosterfield Quarry. During a short walk over level ground we will learn about the restoration of former quarries into nature reserves well known locally for their bird life and flowers, learning something of the restoration methods in use to create and improve habitats, including the propagation nursery set up at the site to supply plants for this work. Your knowledgeable team for the day will help you identify the flora and fauna present. A member of the Nosterfield team will explain their work. Please bring binoculars if you have them. We aim to spend the morning at Nosterfield Reserve before transferring to Nosterfield Quarry for the afternoon, with a planned finish at around 4pm. Supported by: The Lower Ure Conservation Trust

W4: The Ripon Sanctuary Way

Moderate. 7 In 937AD King Athelstan granted the right of overnight Sanctuary in Ripon, both in the Cathedral but also within a boundary marked by 8 boundary crosses. The next day justice was administered by the church authorities. This walk recreates the 8 boundary markers with interpretation boards and a route to link them, covering riverside and countryside paths and some walking through urban Ripon. As we go round the route we will learn more about the origins of Sanctuary, alongside an enjoyable circumnavigation of this historic City. Although deemed moderate because of its length this walk is mostly over easy ground, although it might be muddy in places.

Leave Station car park at 9.00am. Start at Middleton-in-Teesdale Memorial Fountain (GR: NY 948 254, What3Words: ///animates.turns.ejects) at 10.00am. 8 Miles. Moderate. 7 We explore the beautiful Hudeshope Valley, encompassing woodland paths, fields, moorland and the historical remains of the once bustling 18th and 19th century Teesdale lead mining industry. We climb to the summit of Harberry Hill, with magnificent views up Teesdale, across rough unpathed ground, which can be boggy in places. We pass one of the reservoirs used to collect water for hushing, a process used to remove topsoil and undergrowth to expose the lead veins under the surface. This process has shaped the landscape in this area and the walk gives the opportunity to go into one of the largest hushes. We descend on good paths back down to Hudeshope Beck, as it winds its way down towards the Tees and our return to Middleton.
W7: The Changing Nature Of Farming In Swaledale: Hazel Brow Farm Discovery Walk
Leave Station car park 9.15am. Start at pull in parking overlooking Surrender Bridge (GR: SD 989 998, What3Words: ///districts.veered.manliness) at 10.00am. 7.5 Miles. Moderate. 7 Recent years have brought major changes to farming in Swaledale that affect the food we eat, the environment and the landscape in which we live. Hazel Brow Farm in Low Row is a farm that has constantly sought to adapt and diversify. We will visit the farm, and you will hear how they have coped with ever-changing demands. In 2024 the farm won a Tees-Swale gold award for Public Engagement. Starting and finishing at the ruins of the smelting mill of Surrender Bridge the walk will take us over rough moorland and along valley paths to illustrate the landscape in which the local farmers work as well as the important industrial past through which we pass. There are great views of Swaledale throughout and plenty of opportunities to hear and see the wide variety of moorland birds. Supported by: Hazel Brow Farm

Moderate. 7 An undulating walk, all on good paths, with fine views and a variety of landscapes and historic features. We walk past the impressive Aske Hall, for a steady climb over Richmond Golf Course to reach the historic former racecourse. Our gentle climb continues to the viewpoint of Jockey Cap Hill. We then descend through woodland to return to the valley,passing Gillingwood Hall, and back to our start where there should be time to sample the coffee or chocolate at Mocha.
W13: Rokeby Park And Its Historical Setting  Walk And Visit

Easy. 15 to include the guided tour of Rokeby Park Our day starts at Greta Bridge and the roman settlement and fort that existed there alongside the old roman road. As we enter the Rokeby Estate we learn about the history of Mortham Tower, and also the connections to Sir Walter Scott and JMW Turner and the romantic setting of Waters Meet. We follow a delightful, wooded stretch of the River Tees to Egglestone Abbey. Returning to Rokeby Park, the main part of the afternoon will be taken up by a guided tour of the house and grounds and the fascinating history of the families who have lived there. We will walk back to Greta Bridge in time to visit the Morritt Arms and a chance to see Gilroys famous wall mural. There will be time for refreshments. With the walk and visit this will be a full day. A guide from Rokeby Park will be with us all day and will tell us about the connections between the landscape and the history of the estate. Moderate. 7 We follow tracks and paths as we climb over Barningham Moor, crossing Badger Way before we reach our high point of the day at How Tallon, with stunning views across to Teesdale. We head north towards the Stang Forest and East Hope, before making our way to Barningham village via Low Lane. There also are interesting historical features en route including neolithic sites and the mysterious cup rings. A walk through this pretty village takes us back to our cars.

Moderate. 7 From Hargill Bridge, the route ascends along Hargill Beck and then Green Grain, following a track to reach the foot of Bink Moss. From there, we go off piste to the summit of Bink Moss, at 619 metres the high point of the walk, and on to Hagworm Hill (597m) where we pick up a bridleway. A further yomp follows, bringing us to Standards (598m), the final summit of the walk. From here the route descends along good tracks returning to Hargill Bridge.

Start at Station car park at 9.30am. 7 miles. Moderate. 7 Join the local National Trust Ranger for a walk through Hudswell and Hag Woods. We will be identifying flora and fauna as we go and stopping to discuss the management of these important woodlands and riverside pastures. There are lots of fine views of the river and the wooded valley, and from Hag Wood we will see one of Turners famous views of Richmond Castle. Please note that some of the woodland paths are steep, with some steps, and may be slippery in wet conditions. Although the walk is relatively short, we do stop to discuss points of interest, so this will be a full day. Please bring lunch and a drink. Supported by: The National Trust

A special interest day with a walk of around 6 Miles. Easy. 7 This walk is steeped in the rich artistic, historical and industrial heritage of County Durham. Taking the Town Trail around Spennymoor we will visit many of the scenes that the acclaimed local artist, Norman Cornish, painted and made famous. His son-in-law, Mike Thornton, author of the definitive book on the artist, will be our guide for the first part of the walk. From Spennymoor, we will walk back through time along a disused rail bed to Bishop Auckland, and through the Deer Park of the Bishop's Palace. We can appreciate the enormous restoration that has taken place in creating a world class visitor attraction in Bishop Auckland. Our walk concludes at the Town Hall in Bishop Auckland where we will see the Cornish mural depicting the famous Durham Miners Gala. We will take the local bus back to Spennymoor to conclude the walk. Moderate. 7 We explore some of the vast, empty moors in the southwestern corner of County Durham, mainly using sections of both the main route and the Bowes Loop of the Pennine Way. Bowes is a handsome village dominated by the ruins of the 12th Century Bowes Castle, and also the site of Dotheboys Hall, theYorkshire boarding school exposed for its harsh conditions in Dickens novel Nicholas Nickleby. Also of interest are the remnants of RAF Bowes Moor, near Barnard Castle, which was used in the 1940s to store mustard gas, which was burnt off at the end of World War II.The highlight of the walk is undoubtedly Gods Bridge, a limestone bridge over the River Greta, and the UKs best example of a natural bridge formed by cave development.

Buckden Pike (702 m) is the iconic mountain at the top of Wharfedale. We ascend from the south-west using the old miners route, passing the lead mine entrance and ruined buildings. From the summit, on a clear day, we will get good views of the Yorkshire 3 peaks and other recognisable Dales mountains. We descend on the new gravelled path to reach the hamlet of Cray. Then its east along the Limestone Pavement under Yokenthwaite Moor to pretty Hubberholme and back along the Wharfe to Buckden.

Moderate. 7 Following an early sell out in 2024 we repeat this opportunity to take part in a guided tour led by of the one of the landowners of the Heggs-Castle renaturing project. The project isa 200-acre collaborative scheme by 3 landowners to increase biodiversity and to develop a naturalmethod of flood management. Starting from Reeth we walk up the beautiful valley of Arkengarthdale to Heggs Farm to begin the tour. Afterwards the route continues north, crossing the beck to the largely lost hamlet of Arkle Town, and highlighting two further renaturing sites. We follow the flue lines of old smelting mills as we cross Barras Top and descend to the Old Gang Smelting Mill, and evidence of mine workings. Then its over the moor and a steady descent to Isles Bridge and along the river path back to Healaugh.

Easy/moderate. 7 An attractive walk in Wensleydale visiting Aysgarth Falls enroute to the village of West Burton, where we will admire a very different waterfall. Walking on field paths beside the limestone Dove Scar we reach Sorrelsykes Park with its trio of curious follies. A path alongside the River Ure takes us back to Aysgarth Falls. Crossing the old railway line which ran to Hawes, we return on field paths to the ancient village of Carperby for lunch at about 1.45pm in the Wheatsheaf Inn, a traditional Yorkshire pub. Walk participants will be contacted prior to the walk for their pub lunch menu choices which include a traditional Sunday Lunch.

This will be a walk and talk on the theme of rivers and wildlife, starting from near Isles Bridge just west of Low Row, following the River Swale to Gunnerside from where we climb up above the village to be rewarded with beautiful views of Swaledale. A ridge walk at the edge of the moorland is followed by a steady descent through fields and woodland before returning to our starting point. Easy. 7 Following an early sell out in 2024, we are pleased to include this walk in 2025. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Arkengarthdale was an internationally significant lead-producing area. Alongside the industry, nonconformist religion flourished, and seeking out the (now redundant) chapels of the time gives an agreeable focus to this easy walk through a remote and peaceful corner of the Dales. Expect historical snippets and wonderful views. We finish with a visit to the deserted churchyard of Arkle Town before our return to Langthwaite.
W10: A Linear Walk From Kirby Stephen To Garsdale Over Wild Boar Fell
Leave Richmond Station car park at 9.15am. Rendezvous on Garsdale Station platform LA10 5PP (GR: SD789919, What3Words: ///snores.likely.bulbs ) to catch the 10.52am train to Kirby Stephen. 13 Miles. Hard. 7. Participants will be asked to purchase their own rail ticket (5.10) bring you railcard if you have one. Wild Boar Fell and its distinct sharp outline is well known to travellers on the A66 or to Kirkby Stephen. After a short but picturesque train ride, we set off from Kirkby Stephen station across open fields and moorland to the curiously named High Dolphinsty overlooking the Upper Eden valley. A steep climb along the top of the steep cliffs, takes us up to the summit of Wild Boar Fell, at 708 metres with the Howgill Fells spread out to the West and High Dales Fells to the East. We will visit the strange stone pillars before the ridge walk down to Swarth Fell and Swarth Fell Pike. From here its a gentle if boggy descent back to Garsdale Station.

Leaving the Walk at Ingerthorpe we head west, mainly on field paths, passing the former Fishpond that served Fountains Abbey, before reaching the wooded valley of the Skell as we return to our start.

Join local artist Merlyn from The Littlest Falcon to spend a creative day learning the art of single-colour linoprinting in this relaxed, hands-on three-hour session, perfect for beginners. What to Expect: Well begin by designing your print, so please come with an idea in mind, or bring along some reference objects or photos for inspiration. Merlyn will also provide a selection of reference images and linoprint examples. Youll learn various mark-making techniques and how to transfer your design onto your lino block. Once carved, youll be able to test print your block and make any adjustments before printing your final design. Well be printing by hand burnishing - a simple method you can easily replicate at home - but youll also get the chance to try out two different tabletop presses Merlyn will bring along. Materials: Well work with lino blocks approximately 6x8 in size, printing onto 8x10 paper. Oil-based inks will be used (note: these take about a week to dry once you take your print home). All printing materials will be provided. What to Bring: Your own apron Clothes you dont mind getting inkyoil-based ink can stain. Any tools youd like to use (optional)

Make an iron spiral candle holder with the blacksmiths from True North Trades - as seen on Robson Green's Weekend Escapes! In this workshop you will learn techniques used by blacksmiths for over 1,000 years to turn a bar of steel into a cherished item to take home and keep forever. You will be walked through the process step by step by our blacksmith, working with an anvil and hammer. There is no age limit for this workshop, but you must be at least 4' 5" to take part and it will require a degree of strength to swing the hammer. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Essential safety information - you must not wear open-toes shoes or clothes unsuitable to be near open flames (e.g. flammable material such as nylon).
