Some of the first Japanese people to settle in Britain and raise families here after Japan opened up to the rest of the world in the 1860s were acrobats, jugglers and magicians. This talk will focus particularly on Tamamoto Chiyokichi, a rope walker, who left Japan at the age of 10. After touring the world, including fighting on the British side in the Zulu war, he settled in Britain, married a British woman with whom he performed in music halls and circuses, and was apparently a founder member of the Variety Artistes Federation. Ranagri produce an electrifying mix of virtuosic instrumentals, haunting melodies, vivid storytelling and their unique take on old and new folk songs. The London based band are a combination of Irish and English musicians; Dónal Rogers (Vocals/Guitar), Eliza Marshall (Flutes/Whistles), Ellie Turner (Electric Harp) and Joe Danks (Bodhrán/Guitar). Ranagri were delighted to secure a record contract with Grammy Award Winning Record Label 'Stockfisch' in 2014 where they recorded the highly acclaimed SACD hybrid album 'Fort of the Hare'. They also published a book 'Song Folk Art' through Robinswood Press with an accompanying album 'Tradition' recorded throughout 2014. In 2015 Ranagri collaborated with legend crooner Tony Christie of 'Amarillo' fame, recording an album entitled The Great Irish Songbook, taking Tony back to his Irish Roots, and bringing their own style to many of the golden old Irish tunes that they grew up on. This was signed with both Stockfisch and Wrasse Records, and was followed by a large tour of the UK and Germany as part of Tony's Golden Anniversary Tour. Singer/songwriter Kirsten Adamson summons the same heart-stopping purity as Sandy Denny, by way of Emmylou Harris and Kate Bush. Transcendence runs in the family. Her father was Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) and her mother Alexandra, a champion Highland dancer. With summers spent soaking up the atmosphere in Nashville with her dad and a string of leading roles in musical theatre back in the UK, the teenage Adamson’s course was set. She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010, she was forging her own career as a vocalist and keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and more recently shone as half of alt-country duo The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo debut. The austere beauty of her voice has been a constant motif.

Morecambe boasts a rich entertainment history that has garnered national acclaim within the UK, featuring notable figures such as Thora Hird and Morecambe and Wise. However, the invaluable contributions of Black performers who regularly graced the town's stages have been overlooked.This talk will explore how one travelling exhibition and one temporary exhibition aimed to address this oversight by bringing these exceptional artists into the spotlight, highlighting their crucial role in shaping cultural heritage both domestically and internationally. Performers such as Adelaide Hall, Clayton 'Peg Leg' Bates, Cassie Walmer and many more performed in Morecambe and were featured in the exhibition. By illuminating the achievements and contributions of these artists, the exhibitions sought to celebrate and honour their rightful place in Morecambe's rich entertainment legacy, ensuring their stories receive the recognition they deserve. San Diego-born, Franklin, Tennessee-based artist Eve Selis has been a singer for as long as she can remember – she grew up in the San Diego region and, as a youngster, began performing in her local church band, all the while dreaming of becoming a rock star. After an abortive university spell studying musical theatre and English, Selis began a career performing, writing, and recording her own music. She has released 10 albums to date. She has performed at the infamous Abbey Road Studios and toured Europe. Her last studio album, See Me With Your Heart, was produced by GRAMMY-award-winning producer Kenny Greenberg (Allison Moorer, The Mavericks, Joan Baez).

Constant Follower, the band formed around Scottish songwriter Stephen McAll, first emerged with the acclaimed debut Neither Is, Nor Ever Was on Shimmy Disc. The album was shortlisted for the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award, followed in 2023 by a second SAY nomination for McAll's collaboration with Scott William Urquhart, Even Days Dissolve.

When some pals got together to pay musical homage the remarkable work of Echo and the Bunnymen recently (seasoned players from excellenct name bands though they were themselves, natch) little did they suspect the media whirlwind that would ensue When actual Bunnyman and six string psychedelicist supreme Will Sergeant stumbled upon said unassuming Preston show, and, suitably stunned, pronounced Echoes of the Bunnymen the Greatest Tribute Band In The World Everor something like that (with apologies to Bill Drummond.) Let's just say Will was very impressed and went on the BBC a couple of times to say so. Then Bunnymen bass ace Les Pattinson caught them too and followed suit'so there we have it, just like that, Echoes of the Bunnymen are the official, approved tribute band to Liverpool's alternative Fab Four. Now it must surely follow that Mac is lined up to attend the next oneSo tonight is definitely not to be missed, for all fans of that fabulous Bunnymen body of work. Come On Down Painted Bird - excellent Siouxsie and the Banshees homage Painted Bird perform their stunning interpretation of this singular, incredible music. As they rightly say, this may be "a tribute to the music of Siouxsie and the Banshees" But It's not about looky-likeys. "We don't play dress-up, we just kick ass on the music.".. And let's face it, a Bunnymen record was never far away from a Banshees record, no matter how you alphabeticised them. Expect prime Siouxsie, all eras, all lineups all done to perfection. The Magpie Arc is a cross-border band from Sheffield, Edinburgh and Arran and features award-winning musicians Nancy Kerr, Findlay Napier, Tom Wright, Alex Hunter and tour guitarist, BBC Folk Award-winning Sam Carter. Formed to blend their songwriting and musicianship into a fresh take on the British folk rock sound of the 60s and 70s, the band quickly gained recognition for its unique mix of folk, rock, country, and prog-rock elements. For one special night this winter, Dream-Folk songwriter Chris Cleverley teams up with Folk & Roots promotions, to bring his brand new Christmas E.P launch party to London’s iconic Water Rats, with a band of renowned guest musicians. Chris Cleverley was born under a solstice moon, in the honeysuckle mysticism of a late 80s Midsummer. As his fledgling days unfurled, the symbolic sounds of ‘Hunky Dory’, ‘Graceland’ and ‘Ladies of The Canyon’ echoed from the woodchip walls of the South Birmingham terrace where he was raised; quiet and curious, saturnine and shy. Here, the soul of a young artist was shaped. This winter, Cleverley tours his brand new collection of festive songs, the follow up to 2024’s critically acclaimed ‘In the Shadow of John the Divine’ (“Holiday Music that doesn’t suck” - No Depression). In his characteristic style, Cleverley promises part 2 of a Christmas compendium for the head-spinning modern age. A brand new selection of songs for the misfits, for those who have a complex relationship with the self, on their own journeys towards finding a place in this perplexing modern age. Kent born songstress Sorrel Nation brings a soulful mix of folk rock, with powerful vocals and haunting melodies. Sorrel engages audiences with emotive lyrics, ’70s inspired style and is known for impressive covers of Gillian Welch, Fleetwood Mac and Portishead. She has performed at well-known music venues across London and the South East, supporting folk legends such as Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy, Madison Violet, Gemma Hayes and rock legend Tom Hingley. And yes…Sorrel Nation is her real name.
