A Risky Business: Japanese Acrobats in Victorian Britain. A talk by Pernille Rudlin
Some of the first Japanese people to settle in Britain and raise families here after Japan opened up to the rest of the world in the 1860s were acrobats, jugglers and magicians. This talk will focus particularly on Tamamoto Chiyokichi, a rope walker, who left Japan at the age of 10. After touring the world, including fighting on the British side in the Zulu war, he settled in Britain, married a British woman with whom he performed in music halls and circuses, and was apparently a founder member of the Variety Artistes Federation. Photo credit: Robert Sayers. About Pernille Rudlin Pernille Rudlin lived in Japan as a child, but spent her summer holidays with her father helping out on his touring theatre shows on south Devon beaches. She now runs her own business focused on cross cultural communications for Japanese companies and their partners but in her spare time has been researching the Japanese performers who came to Britain and settled. Her research can be seen on www.ninjin.co.uk. She is also a trustee of the Japan Society and non executive director of Japan House London. Ranagri produce an electrifying mix of virtuosic instrumentals, haunting melodies, vivid storytelling and their unique take on old and new folk songs. The London based band are a combination of Irish and English musicians; Dónal Rogers (Vocals/Guitar), Eliza Marshall (Flutes/Whistles), Ellie Turner (Electric Harp) and Joe Danks (Bodhrán/Guitar). Ranagri were delighted to secure a record contract with Grammy Award Winning Record Label 'Stockfisch' in 2014 where they recorded the highly acclaimed SACD hybrid album 'Fort of the Hare'. They also published a book 'Song Folk Art' through Robinswood Press with an accompanying album 'Tradition' recorded throughout 2014. In 2015 Ranagri collaborated with legend crooner Tony Christie of 'Amarillo' fame, recording an album entitled The Great Irish Songbook, taking Tony back to his Irish Roots, and bringing their own style to many of the golden old Irish tunes that they grew up on. This was signed with both Stockfisch and Wrasse Records, and was followed by a large tour of the UK and Germany as part of Tony's Golden Anniversary Tour. Festival performances include Cambridge, Gate to Southwell, Wath, Stourbridge, Trinity, Bloom and Purbeck Folk Festivals. No strangers to large venues, Ranagri have performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fairfield Halls, The Union Chapel, Buxton Opera House to name a few. Combining their love for world music, they collaborated with top Indian Musicians Kuljit Bhamra OBE, Sanjay Guha, M Balachander and members of Britten Sinfonia at The Bhavan Centre, London. In 2016 Ranagri worked with Grammy-nominated producer Graeme Pleeth on their latest album VOICES (recorded at Real World Studios) which combines their own songs and instrumentals with traditional folk Songs such as High Germany and The Snow It Melts The Soonest all performed and arranged in Ranagri's inimitable style. 2017 has seen Ranagri on tour with Justin Currie (of Del Amitri) at Islington Assembley Halls, Perth Concert Hall, Holmfirth Picturedrome and Cambridge Junction. They are currently finishing off writing their new album which will be recorded at Stockfisch early in 2018. Quotes and Reviews There's little to use as a point of reference when you discuss the sound created by Ranagri ... stunning, dazzling, remarkable...any of those will do, however the overriding word is different; and you could throw exciting in there too. Tim Carroll, FolkWords You're unlikely to hear anything more irresistible and more folky this year. Mike Ainscoe, Louder Than War Ranagri - both on the new album 'Voices' and on the stage - are a band that deliver a great sound. If they're not playing near you, buy the album, if they are - buy the album and go see. Also 'album of the week' Fatea Magazine Neil King, Fatea Magazine Creating a trademark sound that's becoming ever more familiar as they continue to make waves on the UK and European folk scene. Folk Radio UK "How often do you hear a sound that's completely new and immediately makes you want to dance? I'll be following Ranagri around, I hope they don't mind..." Katie Derham - BBC Ranagri's flute and harp infused set who wasn't conjuring up visions of the airier moments of sublime Jethro Tull was pitifully short, yet gave enough of a flavour to mark them on the list for the next possible wallet lightning raid on the CD stall. Mike Ainscoe - Louder Than War (review of Cambridge Folk Festival 2015). The standard of musicianship tonight was second to none as the band delivered two excellent sets. The band's musical magic was evident in some of the most flawless playing the Wheelhouse has been witness to over the last 77 shows the venue has staged. Allan Wilkinson - Northern Sky Magazine Quality contemporary songwriting enhanced by beautiful neo-Celtic sounds. Carl Corcoran - Presenter RTE Lyric FM's Blue of the Night Quite possibly one of the best bands we have seen in 2014. Their music is in the main self penned and lyrically has a folk feel to it, but the sound they produce is a mixture of music and rhythms from everywhere in the world. It is so very hard to find a genre to fit them into. Les Jones - Woodman Folk Club http://www.ranagri.com/
Kirsten Adamson

Kirsten Adamson

3 Oct 2025 - 20 Feb 2026

Singer/songwriter Kirsten Adamson summons the same heart-stopping purity as Sandy Denny, by way of Emmylou Harris and Kate Bush. Transcendence runs in the family. Her father was Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) and her mother Alexandra, a champion Highland dancer. With summers spent soaking up the atmosphere in Nashville with her dad and a string of leading roles in musical theatre back in the UK, the teenage Adamson’s course was set. She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010, she was forging her own career as a vocalist and keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and more recently shone as half of alt-country duo The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo debut. The austere beauty of her voice has been a constant motif.

Echoes Of The Bunnymen

Echoes Of The Bunnymen

28 Mar 2026 - 28 Mar 2026

When some pals got together to pay musical homage the remarkable work of Echo and the Bunnymen recently (seasoned players from excellenct name bands though they were themselves, natch) little did they suspect the media whirlwind that would ensue When actual Bunnyman and six string psychedelicist supreme Will Sergeant stumbled upon said unassuming Preston show, and, suitably stunned, pronounced Echoes of the Bunnymen the Greatest Tribute Band In The World Everor something like that (with apologies to Bill Drummond.) Let's just say Will was very impressed and went on the BBC a couple of times to say so. Then Bunnymen bass ace Les Pattinson caught them too and followed suit'so there we have it, just like that, Echoes of the Bunnymen are the official, approved tribute band to Liverpool's alternative Fab Four. Now it must surely follow that Mac is lined up to attend the next oneSo tonight is definitely not to be missed, for all fans of that fabulous Bunnymen body of work. Come On Down Painted Bird - excellent Siouxsie and the Banshees homage Painted Bird perform their stunning interpretation of this singular, incredible music. As they rightly say, this may be "a tribute to the music of Siouxsie and the Banshees" But It's not about looky-likeys. "We don't play dress-up, we just kick ass on the music.".. And let's face it, a Bunnymen record was never far away from a Banshees record, no matter how you alphabeticised them. Expect prime Siouxsie, all eras, all lineups all done to perfection. Close yer eyes and it's them. Superb.. New Wife - and an excellent opener for you tonight in the shape of these electro banger merchantstapping into the awkward squad cool of early eighties game changers like The Normal, Fad Gadget and Thomas Leer.

Chris Cleverley Band

Chris Cleverley Band

30 Nov 2025 - 30 Nov 2025

For one special night this winter, Dream-Folk songwriter Chris Cleverley teams up with Folk & Roots promotions, to bring his brand new Christmas E.P launch party to London’s iconic Water Rats, with a band of renowned guest musicians. Chris Cleverley was born under a solstice moon, in the honeysuckle mysticism of a late 80s Midsummer. As his fledgling days unfurled, the symbolic sounds of ‘Hunky Dory’, ‘Graceland’ and ‘Ladies of The Canyon’ echoed from the woodchip walls of the South Birmingham terrace where he was raised; quiet and curious, saturnine and shy. Here, the soul of a young artist was shaped. This winter, Cleverley tours his brand new collection of festive songs, the follow up to 2024’s critically acclaimed ‘In the Shadow of John the Divine’ (“Holiday Music that doesn’t suck” - No Depression). In his characteristic style, Cleverley promises part 2 of a Christmas compendium for the head-spinning modern age. A brand new selection of songs for the misfits, for those who have a complex relationship with the self, on their own journeys towards finding a place in this perplexing modern age. Songs to celebrate a curious, magical season, in all its joyful and sad contradictions. Cleverley is honoured to be joined on this special night by an exciting band of guest musicians including Sam Kelly, Kathy Pilkinton & Minnie Birch, with a special opening set from Americana harmony duo ‘Awake Mother’. Come bask in an exciting body of new work, showcasing the intricate fingerstyle and ambient sound design of this true guitar-man, inspired by the Lo-fi American Greats, Elliott Smith & Sufjan Stevens; a curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of the 90s Pacific Northwest. “Rather Lovely Electro-Folk” - Radcliffe & Maconie - BBC 6 MUSIC “The feel of Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens” ★★★★ - Scottish Daily Express “Frighteningly brilliant works” - The Daily Star Awake Mother Awake Mother is the brand new collaboration of award-winning Hertfordshire Alt-Folk songwriters Minnie Birch and multi-instrumentalist Kathy Pilkinton. Combining intricate guitar, banjo and ukulele arrangements with complex dual vocal harmonies, the duo present a vibrant new take on traditional music from America and the British Isles, as well as Minnie’s own unique songwriting as heard on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music.

Civil War Presents... Grungers

Civil War Presents... Grungers

26 Jul 2025 - 26 Jul 2025

Love Rock Music Hate Oasis Okay, maybe we don't hate them exactly, but on Saturday 26 July, 2025, on the very same night of Oasis's big London Reunion Show at Wembley, Civil War are taking things back to the 90s by running a night of big, swaggering pyschedelic grunge & desert rock at the legendary Water Rats, near King's Cross, London, which as fate would have it, is where Oasis played one of their very first London shows waaaaay back on 27 January 1994. Our show will feature a killer bill of 4 talented, rising U.K. underground bands - Grungers, Okay You Win, Erronaut and Quinn's Lizard - rocking out purely for your listening pleasure, and all for just £8 (plus booking fee) in advance. For those of you who haven't come to one of our shows before, Civil War still run things in the proper old-school way, putting on real 'living' bands from across the U.K. underground, and supporting famous venues around London. No egos, no tribute acts, no overpriced ticket rip-offs, no commercial sponsors, and most importantly - NO COMPROMISES. Just real, proper, heavy rock music like back in the day in the 90s... maybe the Gallaghers should wake up and take a note out of our book... !
