With hits like ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’, The Blow Monkeys epitomised the glamour of mid-80s pop at its most graceful and sophisticated. In the band’s frontman Robert Howard (aka Dr. Robert), they possessed a tall, charismatic singer who was both camera-friendly and clever, who appeared to be just as much at ease on the catwalk that is pop’s conveyor belt as he was penning witty, incisive songs. While quite clearly Robert’s band, though, the Blow Monkeys were also gifted three immensely talented musicians in bassist Mick Anker (he of the trademark bowler hat), saxophonist Neville Henry and drummer Tony Kiley. Behind the band’s stylish veneer lay something else, which became increasingly apparent from Robert’s lyrics. While some of the Smash Hits generation avoided politics with a capital P, The Blow Monkeys openly criticised the policies of the Conservative government, railing against social injustices and adopting an openly left-of-centre stance on issues of the day. From openly endorsing the gay community “Digging Your Scene” to an outright attack on Margaret Thatcher ‘Celebrate (The Day After You)’ – a duet with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Blow Monkeys were always the thinking person’s pop group. As the 1980s progressed, so too did the band’s musical style, from a sound once dubbed “jazz punk” by Robert to a more soulful, jazzy style and an ever-increasing adoption of dance music. The Blow Monkeys of their rare, indie debut single ‘Live Today Love Tomorrow’ (recorded on a shoestring in 1981) would be barely recognisable to those who bought the Balearic remix of ‘La Passionara’ from 1990. And yet a soulful, spiritually uplifting strain has continued to run through their music – and, indeed, that of Robert’s solo recordings – to this day.

The innovative Anglo-Norwegian ensemble Food with Thomas Strønen and the trio Quercus with folk singer June Tabor and pianist Huw Warren exemplify his cross-genre approach. John Coltrane would have been 100 in 2026. His influence stretches far beyond jazz — shaping popular music from rock to hip hop. Bono even sang of A Love Supreme in U2’s Angel of Harlem. Dan Forshaw and his Quintet mark the centenary with a night of Coltrane’s fire and vision. Coltrane’s story is one of transformation. From his Navy days playing bebop, he rose into Miles Davis’s first great quintet, only to be sacked in 1957 for heroin use. His comeback with Thelonious Monk produced a new sophistication, before he rejoined Miles to shape the best-selling jazz album of all time, Kind of Blue. Soon after, Coltrane took Giant Steps with his legendary quartet — McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones — setting new standards of power and intensity. By the early 1960s he was pushing into the avant garde, music that was raw, searching, and spiritual. His death at just 40 in 1967 led Miles Davis to say that jazz itself had died.

What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic as he takes his brand-new show on the road this autumn. If that’s not enough, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. So, let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really, really good at. She’s appeared at Glastonbury four time at the invitation of Billy Bragg, as well as an eclectic genre-crossing mix of festivals Latitude, Musicport, Blissfields, Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Greenbelt and more including of course Cambridge Folk Festival. MC Hammersmith (posh West London’s leading freestyle rapper with over half a billion views online) presents his new show: “Ice Ice Nepo Baby”. When MC Hammersmith turned 18, his parents (MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice) shockingly revealed he was adopted. His two famous dads helped him ascend to the top of the rap game. He now embarks on a quest to find his biological family, the only way he knows how: by performing an evening of improvised hip hop comedy based on audience suggestions. Lightning-fast freestyle raps, explosively funny rhymes, and utterly captivating genealogical investigation. Featuring brand new routines for 2027!

He's the singer/songwriter who wrote the tunes for the Britpop generation. Simon Fowler, frontman for Ocean Colour Scene, penned The Riverboat Song, The Circle, The Day We Caught The Train, Moseley Shoals and many, many more. Lining up alongside Oasis at Knebworth, he took his band from Birmingham to the height of 1990s fame. Writing the seminal, triple-platinum Moseley Shoals, as well as the number one follow-up, Marchin' Already, Fowler will relive his best work during an evening of classic songs and stories. He'll also trace the origins of that work, taking fans on a compelling journey back to his pre-OCS days.
