What's On @ Thimblemill Library

Hannah White (Full Band) plus Special Guests.
On Saturday 21 June, Live In The Library Presents... welcomes the 2023 AMA award winning singer-songwriter Hannah White with her full band. Defiantly working class, Hannah White in full, proud council estate swagger, is hitting the road and baring all. The artist Holler Magazine described as Americanas answer to Mike Skinner. More Patsy Palmer than Cline began 2023 by earning a Americana Music Association UK Best Song Award, and ended it with the release of her much-anticipated album Sweet Revolution which reached #17 in the Official UK Americana Charts and #14 in the Official Independent Album Charts & earning her a host of AMA UK 2024 Award nominations. Her typically British, self-deprecating humour does nothing to diminish the emotion which Acoustic Magazine described as arresting and wholly believable. Hannah White is an artist who has a wittiness to her grittiness and a sparkling wink in her poetry; One who personifies authenticity and shows us all how London does classic, cosmic country. Uncut Magazine called hers an expressive voice and songcraft, whilst Krentenuitdepop, Netherlands described it as roots music on par with the best currently being made in the US. Fatea Magazine said songwriting from the top drawer whilst 3 Chords And The Truth agree we are in the midst of a seriously fine songwriter. If soul is a feeling, a fire that burns inside you, then Hannah White is without a doubt a soul singer (Holler). Limited Early Bird tickets available at only £12.00 (£8.00 concessions) General Advance tickets & on the door entry will be £15.00 (£10.00 concessions).

Sara Petite Band & Special Guests

Sara Petite Band & Special Guests

11 Jul 2025 - 11 Jul 2025

An outlaw country headliner whose music reaches far beyond the genre's borders, Sara Petite has built an award-winning career with songs that owe as much to the rock & roll roadhouse as they do the honky-tonk. Hers is a raw, rough-edged version of American roots music, delivered by a five-time International Songwriting Competition finalist who's spent nearly two decades calling her own shots. Sara has no interest in chasing trends. She's too busy chasing the muse instead, earning a wide range of accolades including Top 40 success on the Americana charts, international airplay, and more than a half-dozen trophies from the San Diego Music Awards along the way. "When I first began playing shows, people used to tell me 'You've gotta pick a sound,'" she remembers. "I didn't like that advice. I like to do things my way, and that means going all over the map, from country to rock & roll to soul to punk. This music is my own, after all. It should sound like me." The Empress, her seventh record, marks a return to the intersection of country twang and roots-rock bang. It's a place Sara knows well, and she sketches its dimensions in sharp detail. These 11 songs take place in dive bars, trailer parks, the throes of passion, and the feedback loop of addiction, with Sara embodying her characters fully. From the heartbroken narrator of "The Mistress" an old-school country/soul ballad about a lover's affair with alcohol, punctuated by pedal steel and electric piano to the hell-raising hillbilly heroine of "Bringin' Down the Neighborhood," she maintains a strong female perspective, celebrating the full range of womanhood along the way. The Empress is an album for all genders, stocked with songs that tackle the universal struggles we all face. Even so, its central heroes are Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene, and other woman who, like Sara, have pushed against imbalances in society for the sake of fairness. "'The Empress' comes from the idea that our world is out of balance," she says of the album's anthemic title track, which salutes the empowered rule-breakers of the past with fiddle and galloping drums. "Everything's gone off-kilter, and we all need that mix of feminine and masculine energies in our bodies. The more that women are respected and held to the same level of importance as men, the better off we're all going to be. On this album, I'm not writing about misogyny as much as I'm writing about my own life and the strong women I see in my world." Produced by Grammy nominee Eric Corne, The Empress crackles with the energy of a live band whose performances match the material's unique punch. "Sara is a great lyricist and singer," says Corne, who recorded the bulk of the album during a pair of inspired weekends. "She deals with real emotions, real stories, real feelings. It's easy to understand why great musicians play with her, like piano player Bobby Fuego, who played with Leonard Cohen, and bass player Jorge Calderón, who worked with Warren Zevon. They're the real deal, and so is she." With a voice that swoons one minute and snarls the next, Sara charges her way through The Empress like outlaw country royalty. "God Save the Queen," a Rolling Stones-sized rocker that kicks off the album, finds her singing about Mother Earth. "Take care of me; I am your home," she demands during the song's final moments, while stomping drums underscore her urgency. She reevaluates the Adam and Eve story with the greasy raunch of "Forbidden Fruit" "there's always been this idea that woman originally tempted man," she explains, "but 'Forbidden Fruit' asks if that temptation was actually mutual" and even slips into French during the country-fried Cajun track "Le Petit Saboteur."For the album's two-part closer, Sara revisits "Lead the Parade" a song that first appeared in 2008, back when it served as the bluegrass title track of her sophomore album and slows the tempo to an elegant shuffle, turning the track into a New Orleans funeral procession. The reimagined song then gives way to "Meet Me on the Other Side," a gospel rave-up that blends the energy of Saturday night with the emotional uplift of Sunday morning. Released on the heels of Rare Bird, The Empress shines new light on a singer/songwriter who grew up on a tulip farming town in rural Washington, launched her career after moving to southern California, and continues to perform on both sides of the Atlantic. It's a rawly-refined record that's every bit as diverse as Sara herself, with songs rooted in history and experience. "I'm an ever-evolving person who refuses to stay the same, and The Empress reflects that," she says. "My work is very personal, so this record is me a securely insecure, confidently unconfident person who's learned to be comfortable with the in-between." Limited Early Bird tickets available at only £12.00 (£8.00 concessions) General Advance tickets & on the door entry will be £15.00 (£10.00 concessions).

As lead singer of seminal band, The Bible, through his subsequent solo work and his long-time collaboration with the incredible Eddi Reader he has become something of a national treasure. An Evening With Rod Picott: "So Long It's Been Good to Know You"
American mainstay Rod Picott returns to the UK this autumn for one last tour. Picott has been touring the UK since his debut album Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues 25 years ago. The award-winning songwriter brings his compelling live show, gritty delivery and keenly observed songs to the UK for his "So Long It's Been Good to Know You" retirement tour. The thrum of insects on a hot August night. A saw blade biting kiln-dried hemlock. The lonesome highway whine of long-haul trucks. A crude swallow of cheap whiskey that tears at your throat. Tears of loss and the easy laughter of old friends. This is the sound of Rod Picott's world. Over twenty-four years, twelve albums, three published books and a few thousand shows Rod Picott has worked; powered by the fuel of the blue-collar world he was born into. The son of a hard working welder and a homemaker, Picott's youth set him on a road of self-reliance and fierce independence that at sixty years still runs through his blood. Raised in the small town of South Berwick Maine, Rod Picott was a restless and rebellious youth and after high school, a construction worker by trade until moving to Nashville TN. in 1994. He turned down the one record deal he was offered at the start of his career, choosing instead to cut his own path and lay a bet on his own hard work. Through luck and white-knuckled determination Picott has been fortunate to open a tour for Alison Krauss and Union Station, play the Shrewsbury Folk festival, BBC Radio 2 Bob Harris sessions, Maverick Festival and receive the "Song of the Year" award for his co-write (with Slaid Cleaves) "Broke Down" at the Austin Music Awards. Picott is touring the UK this autumn on his "So Long It's Been Good To Know You" retirement tour. He brings keenly observed songs, gritty delivery and a compelling live show. The set will feature songs and stories from Picott's quarter-century on the road. Picott has had songs placed in television and film projects including; The FX series Justified and the Michael Douglas film Solitary Man. His song "Circus Girl" was featured in the PBS documentary Circus. BBC News aired his co-write "Rust Belt Fields" in a news feature. Picott types with two fingers as he failed typing class though excelled in English and Literature. Songwriter's Circle: Summer

Songwriter's Circle: Summer

7 Jun 2025 - 7 Jun 2025

Welcome to the Summer Songwriter's Circle 2025 at the Thimblemill Library. This is a seasonal event that will bring three local musicians together on stage to perform a selection of their original songs alongside a discussion about the inspiration behind their compositions. Hosted by Susy Wall, the evening promises to be a night of song, chat and exploration amongst the books in this wonderful art deco library in Smethwick. Featuring local songwriters Gren Bartley, Abi Budgen and Dan Hartland Gren Bartley 2024 saw the long awaited new album from Gren Bartley. Two years in the making, Unfold expands further and deeper into the cinematic folk genre. Somewhere between R.E.M.s Automatic for the People and Nick Drakes Five Leaves Left, Bartley has found something entirely of its own mind. His 2015 album Magnificent Creatures (★★★★★ R2 magazine) was given outstanding reviews. With production by Birmingham based Gavin Monaghan (Robert Plant, Ryan Adams, Nizlopi, Ocean Colour Scene etc), the record built on the constantly outstanding (fRoots) quality of his previous two records. The album took Gren and his music around the world performing at festivals and venues. In 2019 Gren turned to a more stripped back sound of solo performance and wrote and arranged a new album of tunes and songs exploring his love of world music and bottleneck slide guitar. Gren released the new album Quiet (★★★★★ Northern Sky magazine) to excellent reviews. Gren Bartley is part of the future of melodic songwriting. Forever evolving and adapting, and with unmatched guitar work, he is a modern day troubadour, using his influences from older folk and world music traditions, to create truly astounding records. He brings something new and unique to his audience. He is an artist not to be missed. Will be heard more often once people realise just how good he is - Northern Sky Abi Budgen Songwriter, poet, Beatlemaniac, Sister Rosetta devotee and self-confessed country blues anorak, Abi sings because she has to. With songs that scream for the voiceless, shout from the other shore to keep going, moan for the end of the world, pray for someone to listen. Abi's guitar style is born of a lifetime's love and study of blues and gospel music, of which she is also an internationally respected teacher. She describes her approach as, "how Rev. Gary Davis might sound if he'd gone on to play rock n roll, soul and punk". Her song 'Cry' features on charity album 'Music Minds' alongside artists including Glenn Tilbrook, Graham Gouldman and Tom Robinson. "Vibrant and strong and good for the heart" - Phil Wiggins Dan Hartland Dan Hartlands songwriting has been described as absolutely gorgeous (BBC Introducing), delicately lovely (Americana UK) and as cutting right through to the listeners innermost soul (Maverick magazine). His previous album, Great Novels, was lauded by GigSOUP as a thing of real beauty, Gathering folk and roots influences from both sides of the Atlantic, Dan adds a knowing pop sensibility to his melodies and hooks, putting feeling at the heart of every song. With a keen eye for character and a subtle turn of phrase, onstage Dan's kinetic guitar picking and witty storytelling cut through the usual tropes of the lonesome troubadour, situating the sensitivity of his songs within often wry, quirky contexts. Dans latest album, Haywire, takes that trademark song-craft to new places, incorporating a range of non-acoustic instrumentation that marks a shift from the folkier stylings of his previous work. R2 magazine gave the record four stars and praised the deft lightness of its songs;Folking.comcalled it a superb addition to the collection. Like good books, Dans songs reward repeat attention.
