The Magic Lantern

The Magic Lantern

9 May 2026 - 9 May 2026

Thornton Hough Village Club presents The Magic Lantern plus Reid Anderson. The Magic Lantern is the musical moniker of British Australian singer-songwriter and composer Jamie Doe, an artist dedicated to examining the limitless depth of human experience in our search for meaning. To Everything A Season is his unashamedly emotional fifth album written in the months following his daughters birth and his fathers death six weeks later. Describing their brief meeting in a dementia nursing home Jamie says: In that cathartic moment I saw myself in my father, and my daughter in me and I felt joy and grief in overlapping waves, beautiful and complicated, which continue to ripple outward. These songs are my attempt to make sense of this incredible time where both ends of the circle of life touched. To Everything A Season crackles with the quiet intensity of a family's rawest and most intimate moments. Recorded live over over four days at the legendary La Buissonne studio in France by Gérard de Haro, the sound of To Everything A Season captures a vivid emotional immediacy, the richness of the ensemble arrangements and spirited improvisation belying the devastating songwriting. Working with a septet drawn from London's thriving jazz scene To Everything A Season is both dreamy and direct, making use of the space around Jamie's arresting voice to emphasis it's emotional weight. Lyrically, To Everything A Season is The Magic Lantern's most powerful and accomplished achievement, a mature work that establishes Doe as one of the most confident lyricists writing today. With themes of loops and cycles threaded through the album, the lyric draws on references as diverse as the Bible, the records of John Coltrane and the helix structure of DNA. Born in Australia, before moving to the UK at 12, Jamie adopted the stage name of The Magic Lantern and began writing songs while studying philosophy in Bristol. He lives in London and has released four full length albums and two EPs in addition to a compilation of other artists versions of his songs for the male suicide prevention charity CALM. He has toured the UK, Europe and Australia with acts as diverse as folk singer This is The Kit, Sam Lee, and Alabaster Deplume. He is a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and teaches on the songwriting faculty at the Institute for Contemporary Music Performance. The Magic Lantern has received praise from numerous publications including The Guardian, Songlines, Acoustic Magazine and Folk Radio UK as well as BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens, BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, Guy Garvey, Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 3's Late Junction , Night Tracks and BBC Radio 2's Jamie Cullum, Mark Radcliffe and Bob Harris among others. Reid Anderson is a songwriter from Liverpool. His music is a mix of dark and light melodic folk; Americana mixed with flavours of the 50s and 60s. Dark ballads of love, loss and human connection. Imagine The Wicker Man soundtrack written by Nick Cave, or an episode of The Twilight Zone soundtracked by Leonard Cohen and Roy Orbison.

Thornton Hough Village Club & Bar's venture into comedy have proved a runaway success since they were launched in 2024 by DBN Events headed up by Dean Boodaghians-Nolan. Headlining our June 12 night will be the magnificent award-winning improvised comedy sketch duo The Halls of Ridiculous. The terrific twosome, who have done tour support for Russell Kane, bring a breath of fresh air to the UK comedy scene, combining lightning-fast improvised comedy with high-octane character sketches. But here's the twist - every bit of hilarity is conjured up on the spot, fuelled by the audience's suggestions, ideas, and occasionally, their wonderfully weird imaginations. Featuring Chris Lumb (as seen on BBC Three's Russell Howard's Good News) and Phil Allan-Smith (as seen on BBC One's This is My House), The Halls of Ridiculous grace stages across the UK, from renowned comedy clubs to their very own scratch night in Otley. Their comedic prowess was recognised in 2023 when they clinched the 'Best Alternative Act' title at The Yorkshire Comedy Awards and secured the Southport Comedy Awards' prestigious 'New Comedian of The Year Award'. The opening act is the loveable scamp Chris Giles. Yorkshire-based Chris's style of storytelling, observational comedy, as well as sound for like impersonations, and crowd interaction has seen him perform all over the country. He's gained himself a reputation for being a very entertaining stand up not to be missed. Well also have a set from James Allen. A 2018 Chortle Student Finalist, James delivers whimsical tales of personal embarrassment that have seen him support George Lewis and Hayley Ellis on tour. The show will be hosted by quick-fire gag merchant Ben Turner, a World One Liner Championship and Comedy Cellar Yorkshire New Act of the Year finalist.

Hamilton Loomis

Hamilton Loomis

27 Nov 2026 - 27 Nov 2026

Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock and soul. Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar and harmonica, honing his multi-instrumental talent in addition to performing regularly as part of his family's doo-wop group. A protégé of Bo Diddley, Loomis met the icon backstage at the age of 16 at Houston's famed venue Rockefeller's. Before the night was over, Loomis was onstage playing guitar with the legend. Diddley quickly became friend, mentor, collaborator and supporter, appearing on two of Loomis' albums and presenting a cherished red guitar that he still plays. Loomis and crew shine on stage proving his music is best experienced in person, where one can see and hear its intended splendor. Described by Blues Blast Magazine as a non-stop turbo of power, one minute moving from side to side of the stage, and then taking on his horn player in a head-cutting contest on the apron of the stage the next minute. Loomis' energetic, get-in-withthe-crowd antics are infectious. The swaying and clapping are just as he envisioned. Being comfortable on stage is something that comes completely natural to me, he says. I feel joy when I play music and it literally moves me. It moves my body. I learned long ago that whenever music is coming from you, from deep inside your soul and from the right place, people will feel that on a deeper level and might not even know what's going on inside of themselves. I enjoy engaging the crowd and feel a show should be an interactive experience.
