The List

Traverse Theatre

The Traverse has been a key player in British theatre for 50 years as Scotland's long-standing home of new writing, although it's increasingly taking an interest in emerging writers. It's here that audiences got their first taste of playwrights such as Gregory Burke, Liz Lochhead and John Byrne, names now widely known to theatregoers. Part of the cluster of buildings forming the Lothian Road arts quarter, the theatre is in the basement of an office block next door to the Usher Hall. Beyond the large and popular bar and café are two performance spaces. Traverse 1 accommodates up to 350 people – although it feels much bigger – while Traverse 2, with seating for 100, recalls the company’s intimate former theatre in the Grassmarket. Specialising in UK and world premieres, the Traverse also has a busy line-up of visiting companies and hosts everything from children's theatre to puppetry and experimental music. Behind the scenes, it puts in a lot of work with up-and coming playwrights and runs a programme of workshops, classes, readings and discussions. It is one of the liveliest venues on the Edinburgh Fringe.

Leila Navabi: Relay

Leila Navabi: Relay

17 Apr 2026 - 22 May 2026

A bold, joyful punk-musical one-person show about making a queer family on your own terms, written and performed by award-nominated comedian, writer and composer Leila Navabi.   The critically acclaimed show was included in The Guardian's "10 Best Shows to Catch" at Edinburgh Fringe this summer and was nominated for the Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence.  Relay blends stand-up, electro-pop musical numbers and hand-drawn animation into a heartfelt, hilarious hour about what it takes to start a family when the odds (and the system) are stacked against you. Leila dives into the wild ride of making a baby at home with her partner, a best mate as the sperm donor, and, naturally, his boyfriend cheering from the sidelines. Navabi unpacks love, ambition, and the chaos of building a family on her own terms. Equal parts absurd and profound, Relay is proof that family is not just what you make it, but how.

The Effect

11 Jun 2026 - 12 Jun 2026

Nardones Academy College Acting & Performance Course is proud to present a bold new staging of The Effect by Lucy Prebble at the Traverse Theatre. This thought-provoking production showcases the talent and dedication of the Academys emerging performers as they take on one of the most compelling contemporary plays of the last decade. The Effect is a gripping and intelligent exploration of love, neuroscience, and the fragile nature of human emotion. Set within a clinical drug trial, the story follows two volunteers who begin to fall in love while participating in an experiment testing the effects of a new antidepressant. As their feelings deepen, questions arise: are their emotions real, or simply the side effects of the medication? Blurring the line between science and the heart, the play challenges audiences to consider what it truly means to feel and whether love can ever be fully explained. Marking a significant theatrical moment for the city, this production is the first time The Effect has been performed in Edinburgh in over ten years. Presented at the renowned Traverse Theatre, a venue celebrated for groundbreaking and contemporary theatre, the production reflects Nardones Academy Colleges commitment to industry-level training and providing students with meaningful professional performance experiences. This exciting staging promises an intense, intelligent, and emotionally resonant evening of theatre as the next generation of performers bring Prebbles powerful writing to life.
