Listen! presents Laura Jurd

1 Nov 2025 - 1 Nov 2025

Laura Jurd - trumpet Cori Smith - viola Ruth Goller - bass Corrie Dick - drums One of the most distinctive voices in jazz and improvised music today, Laura Jurd's unique approach to the trumpet is celebrated in the work that she creates. Laura's love of folk traditions can often be heard in her music, alongside a background in classical composition. The result is a melodic world full of compelling twists and turns, whilst retaining a grounded sense of familiarity. In the past couple of years, Laura's love of traditional music has deepened having played alongside the likes of Irish fiddle player Ultan O'Brien and English accordionist Martin Green (one third of super-group Lau). This autumn sees Laura returning to the stage, presenting her astonishing new album, "Rites & Revelations" due for release in October 2025. The music takes the listener on a journey of ritual and catharsis, propelled by the world-class rhythm section of Ruth Goller - bass and Corrie Dick - drums, alongside strikingly-brilliant folk violist Cori Smith. "Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East... her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs - John Fordham, The Guardian Photo: Celie Nigoumi
Listen! presents Héloïse Werner & Colin Alexander
French-born soprano and composer Héloïse Werner is currently an Associate Artist at Wigmore Hall and is quickly becoming a latter-day Cathy Berberian or Meredith Monk (The Times). In demand as both a composer and soprano, her much anticipated second album 'close-ups' was released to enthusiastic reviews in June 2024 by Delphian Records. Colin Alexander is a cellist and composer working across a range of disciplines and traditions. In June 2024, Colin released four new solo cello suites on his record label October House Records whilst also composing and performing the music for Bijan Sheibani's new play The Cord at the Bush Theatre, London. As a duo, they regularly collaborate with artists such as Kit Downes, Max Baillie and Jas Kayser, and have recently performed at London's Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre and Wigmore Hall, and at the End of the Road and Deal Festivals. They are often heard on BBC Radio 3 and are an ensemble in residence for the composition students at the Royal College of Music for 2024/25. In concert, the duo perform their own original compositions and improvisations, as well as new music by contemporary composers such as Oliver Leith. However, they're just as likely to enchant listeners with a sublime rendition of a song written in the 12th-century by Hildegard of Bingen.
